Custom Content Challenge: July 2015: Holdable Objects
« on: July 06, 2015, 05:17:43 pm »

The theme for this month's challenge: "Holdable Objects":

Holdable Objects:  D&D is full of items that can be held in hand that are not weapons. Why not expand on what's available in NWN? New torches, sceptres, generic holy symbols (lightning bolts, alpha/omega, small pole-mounted cloth standard, etc.), horns (and other instruments), crystals, chalices, flags, figurines, fishing poles, or even...severed heads! Models, icons, prefabs, scripts...lots of potential for creativity.

This theme was suggested by ehye_khandee and The Amethyst Dragon.

Guidelines:

  • It must be fully working in game.

  • Use of vanilla NWN or publicly available texture is fine.  Just remember that NWN textures must have dimensions in powers of 2 (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc.).

  • Teamwork is welcome.

  • Beginners most welcome. Don't be afraid, just try, you'll be surprised!

  • "Custom Content" includes many sorts of things: models, scripts, prefabs (areas, items, creatures, conversations, quests, etc.), sounds, portraits, or anything else new for the game.

  • All submissions must be finished, working, and emailed to NWNCCCMakers@gmail.com (or a non-Vault link provided) by August 1st, 2015. Sooner than that is perfectly fine too. ;-)

  •

Somethings you could include in the download/email that would make packaging everything up easier and faster:

  • 2da lines needed.

  • Screenshot from in game for use on the vault page (this also gives me hints on how to display the new goodie). Formats: .bmp, .jpg, .png, or .tga

  • Portraits (if needed) of your new goodie. Placeables and monsters should include a portrait.

  • Inventory icons (if needed) of your new goodie.

  • Any credits you would like listed.

  • If this is your first entry, please tell me what name you would like your work listed under and provide a link to your other NWN content if you want that displayed as well (the link bit is totally optional).

  • Also if you would like an invite to the CC Makers group, send Rolo Kipp a friend invite. The group is nothing spectacular, mostly just documentation on 2da lines.

  •

Remember, the Challenge is all about fun, sharing, creativity, and surprise!

This thread is for all sorts of discussion about this month's theme: ideas for things to make, questions/concerns, announcement of what you intend to make, screenshots of work in progress and/or finished projects.

If you want to discuss the Monthly Custom Content Challenge idea as a whole or wish to submit ideas/themes for future monthly Challenges, please post in its thread here

When submitting a new theme, please provide a title and short summary of the theme.

If you have a technical question about some custom content creation, please create a separate thread so that the answers can be found later by anyone, not just people interested in this Challenge.

    We'll try to help!

Have no fear and join the fun!

    And finally, you can:

    Submit theme suggestions.

    Vote for August's theme.

    Email content to: NWNCCCMakers@gmail.com

A few days late, but we've got a new theme. Also, I'm now starting work to download previous months' content so I can push them all out to the Vault in the next few days.

So, nothing special to mark the 5th anniversary then?

The 5th Anniversary is August... this is July, is it not?

Hm... Can't really have Holdable Giant Killer Spleens...

On the other hand... I could make Holdable Bricks for characters to hit stuff with...

Biggest problem I've run into in the past with holdable things is that whilst they can look good held aloft, as with the Torches, they then look a bit daft at other angles, should a character lower their arm... I did a holdable severed head a couple of years back with an emitter to drop blood from the neck which looked very good when held up, but anytime the damn thing was lowered, the blood shot out horizontally and thus immediately looked highly amusing, which wasn't really the effect I was after... Might go back to that and see if I can get it to work better.

Well, if the head was still sort of alive and had magical mystical arteries that still had some pressure in them, then horizontal spurts would looks sort of interesting and cool.  Maybe some creature with toxic acid/blood (ehm I believe you are "slightly" familiar with those) used as self acid/gore spewing weapon, and...

What?  Why are you all looking at me that way?

For a few possibilities, there are some NWN2 VFX here for characters holding objects. It could also be fun to have a couple of litters so you could have some Pythonesque litter races...

PHoD: how about using those "acid drops" effect(in standard nwn weps) for blood?

Brick sounds like it could be good for hitting both lowered and raised.

rjshae: I vaguely recall litter being done by someone.. maybe OTR or Proleric? Why is that vfx of rake "upside down"?

Yes, but wasn't your idea to do an "anniversary" thing separate and alongside the month's main theme (following your own and The Mad Poet's suggestion of previous entrants tarting up or adding to their previous entries? Thus it wouldn't be on the poll, whatever wins that being open to anyone, old and new, so as not to exclude anyone.

I think TAD's more than overworked enough at the moment - (correct me if I'm wrong, large purple crystalline article) - so perhaps it would only be fair if somebody else lent a hand and ran a thread for the anniversary improvements and updates we (maybe) will all (probably) do (hopefully). If I had any internet access of my own I'd offer to oversee it myself, but I've got nowhere for people to email subs to, which would kind've be necessary, I imagine, not knowing much about what technicalities might lurk beneath the seemingly tranquil surface of such an apparently simple undertaking.

Anyway, not wishing to meander billions of miles off-topic, I've grubbed about in a mouldy cardboard box and found the putrefacted old head. I think it may be more rubbish even than I recall, but I'll see what I can do with it. If I figure out everything, I'll try and do a series of different ones, but I'm promising nothing so if anyone else is set on doing severed heads, don't let me stop you.

(PS:- The brick was a joke... I think).

I'd like to see the 5th Anniversary to be open ended, so whomever is participating, are free to make anything they want rather than being told what the CC is.

    But then it wouldn't be a challenge... '<img'> '<img'>

I believe it's because the connection point on rake model itself is messed up. Just a NWN2 bug, I guess.

The rake itself was simply facing the opposite direction in the model.  Both Dann and I fixed it.  His version is in that pack, but he apparently didn't update the screenshot.

    Nice work.

Here are a few things for NPCs in markets/taverns - holdable apples, bread, wicker baskets, wine bottles and mugs.

I've not had much time for NWN stuff recently as I'm in the process of moving house, but will hopefully have time to do a few more things for this by the end of the month.
