A wand-type of weapon as a light crossbow model with some of the clever stuff mentioned above would allow mages to throw elemental projectiles while using the basic mage weapon proficiency.

though it would require bolts, and would fire crossbow bolt VFX that would stick into the creature when hit or surrounding area on a miss.
