Question? Tileset haks for Servers
« on: July 19, 2015, 08:23:10 pm »

I was going to make a bunch of smaller modules that would be linked together to make one large world. I have been getting all my scripts together picking out haks to use, working with 2da files, Project Q, CEP, and really just getting a base module to start building from. I was going to use Medieval City, Medieval Rural, NWN2 Houses, Seasonal Work Shop, and so on to build my multi module world. However a friend of mine has offered to help but he wants to combine them all into one module when we are done and host it on the internet for friends, family, or anyone to play.

That said, how well do tileset haks like Seasonal Forest and Medieval City (over 300MB each) do with modules of lets say 1,000 areas for example? We both have nice computers that we built that are over kill for NWN1 but some of our friends and family don't have as nice of computers.

I was just wondering if we are going to have one very large module like this then should we aim for smaller tileset haks? We don't want a lot of lag or high load times. Any way now you know why I came here to ask all you PW server people your thoughts on tileset haks combined with a very large PW server.

Thanks for your time.

If you have 1 area built with Seasonal Forest or 100 makes no difference. What affects the load time of an area is the size of it and everything you put into it, not how often a tileset is used in the module.
Sure, tilesets with higher poly count need longer to load than old ones, but you'll hardly find a computer these days that can't handle the poly count of newer tilests and the loading times are not that much higher if your areas aren't too big. The excessive use of placeables and NPCs in an area will increase the load time more than high poly tilesests will.

And if you want to know if downloading a few 300 MB tilesets (which are only a little more than 30 MB packed with 7z) is asking too much of people who want to play a PW/module, consider that if you download a game from Steam these days they often have between 10 to 20 GB! So saying that downloading a few 30 MB haks is too much is just a lame excuse.

I agree with you on players downloading the haks. I wasn't sure how large haks like these with higher poly count do with PW's now days. I was reading over some old posts about people using Seasonal forest for PW's 4 or 5 years ago and saying things like it wasn't meant to be used for a PW. While at the same time another guys today is saying his server has over 1300 areas. So I wan't sure if using these larger haks with large PW's was a bad idea or not these days.

Any way thanks for the insight Zwerkules.
