Lands of Arda (Middle Earth) server ressurected
« on: January 08, 2014, 11:31:43 am »

The Lands of Arda (Middle earth)

Requirements :
·         Neverwinter Nights Game Version 1.69
·         6 HAKpacks (details below)

The HAK packs required to play this server can be found here

http://arda2forums.s...rum=arda2forums

4 of the haks have been neatly packaged with installation files and it is simply a case of installing them into the Neverwinter Nights main directory. The 5th hakpack is only very small and simply requires unzipping and copying into the directory /HAK of your Neverwinter nights install. The 6th hakpack is a collection of bugfixes and graphics revamps and instructions on where to put the component parts once unzipped is included in the link above.

There you are done and ready to enter the server.

The server can be found by selecting multiplayer, then direct connect to the following IP address

IP:  landsofarda.servebeer.com

A bit about this server

The project of creating Lands of Arda began back in 2002 its mission statement was to create the ENTIRE WORLD of Arda as described by J.R.R Tolkein through his series of books, not limited to but including The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings and Silmarillion. Since this time there has been a constant flow of new areas added. The resultant server spans from Mithlond of the Grey Havens, Bree Rivendell, Moria, Rohan, Minas Tirith through to Mordor, Harradwaith and Down into the deep south of Arda and areas such as Gaven, the yellow mountain etc etc….

In fact there is now pretty much no area from any Tolkein literature that is not represented in this server. Many you will have heard of and know the lore behind, many may be new to you.

At its height Arda had 8 people working pretty much full time on designing and moulding its areas. (Some of which have now gone on to a full time profession in computer game design).

When I say this server is Huge, it is an understatement I have never seen anything close to its size in any Neverwinter module.

-I want to take this opportunity to Reassure you the 1Gb Hakpak download IS worth it. (I know its huge, but there is 11 years of a growing server in here!)

A massive quantity of the Content in this server is custom content, some designed and skinned from scratch by its designers other via the amazing Neverwinter designer community. To give you an example of how much custom content exists here a quick count just of Player equipable unique items shows 2704 at present, the server takes 2 hours+ to compile when we do work on it. In short it really has been a labour of love for many people over the past 11 years.

The server was mothballed shortly after support for gamespy was removed from neverwinter (Although a few die hards continued to work on it for fun, adding new things etc etc).

So basically A few of us have got together and resurrected the server after learning many people still play Persistent worlds in Nverwinter, and believing you haven’t seen anything until you have seen this server. It is currently running on a temporary server on the IP given above, however we have plans to move it to its own dedicated server within the next 2 weeks (Infact the hardware is already set up, we just want to add 1 more set of areas to the module before updating and moving it to its new home!)

So what Do you Get in Lands of Arda??

·         Hundreds of different areas and landscapes encompassing all your favourite areas from Middle earth

·         Unique NPCs from middle earth Chat to Bilbo, Slap a Nazgul, give Shadowfax a sugar lump, Kick tom bombabdil in the nuts etc etc.

·         Forget the Jaggered boring Neverwinter Graphics, Beautiful reskinned areas, Items and Mobs (be wowed by Moria, Imlandris and Minas Tirith)

·         Hundreds of varied dungeons all from Tolkein Lore (I believe around 400 at present)

·         Custom spells, Custom items, Custom bosses, Custom NPC AI and mobs. – Not enough to go into what exists needless to say there is a 1gb Hakpak full of this stuff.

·         Roaming mobs with unique AI

·         Day and night influencing Dynamic areas and mobs

·         Persistent banks

·         All Unique named items taken directly from Tokein Lore (say goodbye to “Longsword +3 and hello to Sting, Glamdring and the Arkenstone”)

·         Unique crafting system to Craft Ardas most powerful Items.

·         Relevelling and respecting service via npc’s (No more this character is borked I best start again)

·         Ressurection system of characters. (Get to level 40 and resurrect them at level 1 with bonus stats and added extras – do it as many times as you want)

·         Hundreds of costumes for your roleplaying needs

·         Progressive levelling with areas scaling for party play as well as solo play.

·         Quests (whilst the land is mainly sandbox style there are still many quests)

·         Custom moving music and sound effects.

·         Friendly community consisting of new players and vets who have dipped in and out of the server for the past 11 years.

We would love to see you in the game to expand our community and see the server full once more (Some of the raid style scripted bosses are getting lonely with not enough people on to take them down).

Well that’s about it, Bite the bullet download the massive hak and come join us.

Oh as far as rules go, Devastating Critical is banned. The server does check for it randomly and bans characters with the feat, but we rely mainly on peoples honesty not to select it.

Many thanks

Wondered if something was putting people off this Persistent world or people were experiencing a bug?

Keep seeing lots of new players log in for 20 mins then never come back again '<img'>

Mithlond (starting areas) arent really that inspiring, you have to give it more time than 20 mins '<img'>

You have to make it addictive in the first 20 minutes!  Don't have time right now, but when I do, I might check it out  -  just to give you feedback. '<img'>

Well it wouldnt do to have nazgul and smaug roaming around the start area.

Considering the haks are well over a gig I would have thought people could make an educated guess that there is a bit more to it than killing badgers around Mithlond and Hobbiton, which is about all people will see in the first 20 mins - I dont get why people would spend time downloading all these haks, killl a couple of badgers in the start village then log off.

I haven't tried it, but the size of the haks dosn't necessarily make a good or interesting module. I use around 4.5gb of haks in the PW I'm building.

Neither do you need dragons or nazgul all over the place. Personally, I am into low-magic, low-level setups anyway and consider combat as having an important but secondary role in a RP server experience.

As I said, when I have time I'll have a look and make a few suggestions with my 'easily bored player' hat on. Especially that I am very familiar with the setting and all.

Like others have said...no, the players don't.  It's the builder's job to make the first 20 minutes interesting enough so that the players WANT to keep playing.  People don't decide to keep playing a game DESPITE a crummy beginning in most cases.

Oh its far from crummy.

There are quests pretty starting areas, shops, dungeons, travel etc etc from the word go at lv 1. The point im making is you arent suddenly going to have access to uber custom items and arent going to be kiling much other than bats, badgers, bandits and the odd skelly in a crypt. The dungeons are designed to ease you in so the lv 1,2,3 dungeons are only a few maps big. You are going to have to put in some time to level up before you start seeing dungeons that are the norm from lv 10+ (2 to 3 hour dungeons with 20-30 maps are the norm).

Spoke to some new joiners last night that had logged in before and it seems that the issue was people had newly purchased NWN and never played it before. The reason they had logged before after 10 mins was they had gone to read up on NWN as they didnt have a clue what was going on.

Got 53 characters in the vault atm since re-release, however we only seem to get 3 or 4 online at once which is a shame with time differences I suppose thats okay ish for an old game.. Starting to get lots of old players coming back who have got wind the server is back up so I mustnt complain, maybe my expectations of a full server of 32 at all times like the old days were a bit optimistic '<img'>

That sounds good. As far as expecting 32 players logged in at all times goes, yes those are very high expectations now. However I have been on servers in recent years that have had more players than their staff could deal with.

The community still needs good DMs because there are enough players still around to overwhelm a PWs staff.

Fair enough -- hadn't tried it myself, just a general observation.

Well, that's a good thing if people are still buying the game -- need more new blood.

I played Arda PW for years and now I'm really happy it's back and it's event better then before. This is by far the most well designed persit world available for NWN.

It's not an uber magic world but neither a lower magic one. It's at it should be: if you're a caster you have to work hard your way to top level, but once there you're able to unleash uttermost power over massive encounters. On the other side  the most skilled fighter has no equal on breach enemy lines and throw havoc all around.

Not to mention you can rebuild your character for free and also reincarnate to gain special abilities once you hit max level

Arda has new developers  that regulary work on content and game features.  Players  from  the old ranks are coming back and new one are joining.

Can't wait to have server full again as it was in the past;)

Sounds interesting. Recommend you put all your haks into 1 rar though. There are paranoid/sensible people for whom alarm bells ring when seeing exe files just for installing haks.

*Starting areas have now been updated and prettified using the latest tilesets and nwn2 models.
* Entire game has had a massive graphical update.
* There is a new hak found on our website and here, this is required along with the original haks

https://www.dropbox.... revamp_1.1.zip

Also implemented the following end game content:

A massive scripted 'Raid area dungeon' for party play at lv 40
Arena of the Valar, a player led event for party play. Allowing parties to do battle with some of Middle earths most epic characters with waves of increasing difficulty. (This is the hardest content ever added to Arda and rewards tokens allowing things such as 'create your own item', recieve a free lv40 character' and much much more.

Permanent new server is now built  and transfer to it will commence within the week, watch this thread for New IP.

Our community has been steadily growing, wth a mix of old and new players and we would love to see more! There are currently 30+ active players since we re-launched 3 month ago and most evenings see small parties of 5-10 players enjoying our server.

So, if you havent. Bite the bullet, download the massive amount of Haks and come and join us in The Lands Of Arda!

We have finished constructing our new permanent dedicated server.

The new server ip to direct connect to is (hostname)

landsofarda.servebeer.com

The links at the start of this page have been edited and now lead to our forum and the "hakpack download" and installation instructions.

Other updates include:

- A complete and ongoing overhall to graphics (you guys asked for this to bring the starting area graphics up to par with end game graphics)

- Many new areas

- 2 New raid boss areas for party play with scripted bosses for end game party play.

If you have not yet given our server a whirl feels free to join us we would love to see you and see a full server once again!

Hey guys, my brothers and  are old LoA players from Madwack days and playing Arda 2 but not seen a DM on in the past week. Have some questions, can someone reply here or log onto the server and respond?
