Downloadable Persistent World?
« on: January 15, 2013, 08:44:45 am »

My friends have recently scattered across the US and I am looking for a way to do some D&D-style stuff with them. Are there any downloadble persistent worlds out there that give us a good basis to start with and to go from there? Thanks.

Isle of Thain used to be available many moons ago. A check here suggests it still may be.

I am considering making my work on Arnheim available. Send me a PM and we can discuss it.

To be clear I am not sure yet about doing this, so I will need some convincing, and would like to talk with you about it.

Thanks Fergoose, I'm looking at it now.

@Henesua, I sent you a PM. Thanks for at least considering it.

There are quite a few on the Vualt, although it takes some searching around.

What would you like to do in a PW? Any limitations (NWNX with SQL Database)? Thaine I call requires crafting for good armors. Rhine I'd ok, more hack and slash. Universe of Arlandia starts out on the first world, but appears to be nearly limitless since it runs on NWNX/MySQL(you can rule a world, build a starship and move to another randomized world) LOTS of crafting required and resource gathering. Arbor Falls has a ton of fans. You could try one out, see how it goes and then try another.

*World of Rhun, I meant. Can't edit in my phone browser. Good ol' Land of Nordock. Seviss (Platemail) is up to who knows what version, I should check that out, haven't heard anything in some time.

You might also check out The Shield Lands, which us based on the old Greyhawk world, I found it more fun once I disabled some of the more hardcore features, which I thought too much for solo play (even after I added henchmen). He does a cool sort of Life thing with a specialized version of NESs? Soaen system. So eventually you all WILL die as the bigger creatures take over everything.

               Here are the requirements:

A decent variety of classes and/or races for players to pick from.
A balanced game so that each class can at least contribute.
Preferably an interesting crafting system - I have a player who literally squealed at the idea of being the crafter for our group.
The ability to allow up to 35 players to play at the same time.

I don't really know what else to add as a requirement - I haven't done this before. I have the dedication, though, and a bunch of IRL Friends over the last 20 years who have done nothing but send me texts all day about this idea.

I think that if I could get a decent set up for a builder, I would have fun crafting my own world. I'm fine with it being smaller at first - my players understand I'm doing this from scratch. I just don't really know where to start. I'm tweaking around with Arbor Falls right now - but it's SO LARGE. I feel like it could be intimidating for me to try to DM in this world that I know nothing about.

I think Arbor Falls is a great choice, for what you've said you want. You can change names of towns, roads, whatever, to suit your own world. You can generate DM maps and print them or keep them on toolbar to help during gaming sessions as DM. You can easily limit your players' explorations to areas you have become familiar with, and gradually allow them to branch out. As an example, check out an area you want to set an adventure in, say a forest area and a cave. You can start your PCs wherever, and then RP them traveling to this area as part of their quest, then jump them all to the woods, etc. I'd say the sooner you just get started the better, because trying to get things 'just so' can often lead to never getting things 'just so'. PLAY!!!! '<img'>
Good luck!

Thank you all.  I decided there wasn't really a good choice for what I wanted to do so I ended up purchasing a Unity3d Pro license (www.unity3d.com/unity) and am working with some old friends from Riot Games and Turbine to make our own little ORPG. It won't be nearly as big as NWN but we also don't have to worry about money since we're only doing it for us.

Here's our design goal, if anyone is curious.

Goal: To create a persistent world in which players can log on, roleplay with each other, and play the game without a DM overlooking them. However, special events can be run by a DM including large scale events such as invasions, medium sized events such as a rare mob spawning in a dungeon, or personal quests for individuals who get unique skills, items, spells, or something similar. The idea is for the world to have a maximum of 30-35 players at any one time, allowing for personalized content for each player while still maintaining a sense of community. Essentially, medium-scale, online D&D that doesn't require a DM at all times. Please remember this isn’t for commercial use.
