Andrune: Celtic-themed Roleplaying World

               IP: 173.160.202.85:5121
Forum: http://bandrune.runboard.com
Haks: CEP v2.4
Genre: Roleplay; emphasis on PC and DM driven stories
Setting: Gaelic-inspired dark fantasy
Level Range: 5-30; any character can become epic with persistence
Magic: Low magic themed; +4 and +5 items are a rarity

At its core Andrune is about storytelling, and telling that story as a community. Most important to us is a dynamic world shaped by the players. Our DMs are always happily to bring the world to life and facilitate player-driven storylines. There are multiple DM run quests throughout most weeks and content for parties of all levels.

Andrune takes place in a gaelic-inspired setting with an emphasis on blurred morality, dark fantasy, and high adventure. Over the years our members have developed a unique world with its own elaborate history, cultures, and pantheon. But the world still exists within the general framework of Forgotten Realms and D&D – characters from other worlds can easily find their place within Andrune.

Players are encouraged to start their characters with a goal in mind, whatever that may be (founding a society of assassins, knighthood, amassing the biggest collection of shiny objects) and work towards it through roleplay and questing. It doesn’t matter if that’s still your character’s goal a month in but it will bring you into contact with other PCs and the ready and willing DM support. Who knows what road your personal quest will lead you down, but it will most likely take quite a few unexpected twists along the way.

Background

Millennia ago exiles from Faerun forged a life for themselves on a distant untamed island. They created a great Empire which claimed dominion over the land, sending the native men and elves on a retreat ever deeper into the hills and forests. Soon even the old gods who stewarded the land fell silent. In their place the Empire achieved great feats of engineering, magic and alchemy as it rose to glory.

But that was long ago and the land has become riven by strife.

In the Empire of Andrune, the lights are going out
Political rebellion from the Commonwealth of Highmarch threatens to sunder the Empire
A secretive cabal of wizards and academics plot to supplant the Emperor and his vassals
Northern wild men band together to rebuild their long lost kingdom.
At the cost of civilization the native elves and fey seek to restore the island’s natural splendor
Evils from before the memory of man seek a way back into the world
And some even say that the Old Gods have awoken

It is a time for adventurers and heroes, for great deeds and fell treachery. There is a fortune and a name to be made in the land of Andrune, but great risk too.

               This looks fancy :3

Was browsing your forum rules and noticed this:  "4. Adult themes and situations may sometimes be present on the server. No players who identify themselves as being over the age of 18 will be permitted to play."

Is this a typo or are adults really not allowed on your server?

               Thank you!

And hah, it most certainly is a typo, otherwise I'd have to ban everyone. I do appreciate the catch.

Aha okay =3 No prob *lurks forum more* The only thing I can see throwing me off would be the rest restriction. How much does it interfere with casters? Especially at lower levels.

It's not too bad, since you start very close to level 6, and items found within the world can give unlimited uses of low level spells. Most play on the server is focused on groups and the DM events- which happen most days sometime around afternoon/evening PST. (Subject to RL pulling our players away!)

Oh the instant level up sounds good, but does the DM interaction mean that you can't go off exploring/smashing on your own?

You certainly can, and often times people on are more than happy to partner up(on a high or low level PC) to join you in monster bashing / RP.

I tried this place out the other day and the first thing I have to say is wow! It's a big beautiful world! So much attention to detail!!! And there were other players on who were interested in doing a little RP. There also seemed to be some scripted quests and they made good use of subtext in the second chat window. There are also body/armour/weapon customizations- do like that a lot. And finally, there seemed to be an xp script in place for role playing, tho I couldn't quite tell if it was manually metered out or if a DM was behind it.

Now for a few quick cons:
low low xp for regular adventuring - ick!! lol 20xp for something that nearly killed me!
Nerfed spells- Darkfire lasting minutes per level instead of ours? Dafuq?
For as big of a place as this is, there doesn't seem to be much to do if you're on alone. That's only a con really if you're playing at an off time.

All in all tho, I really liked it! A lot of effort went into this place and I think everyone should check it out!

Oh my, its been a while. We definitely appreciate your praise, and are glad our hard work's been appreciated!

*We did cut back a bit on experience granted from kills because there's a static experience award for roleplay and exploration which will net you about 100-300 every hour if you're active. I realize that not all character builds are well equipped for sustained monster-hunting and don't want to penalize people for it.

*We have tinkered with a great many spells to make them more suitable for our environment. Darkfire, for example, has been scaled back in exchange for allowing you to configure the damage type to whatever is appropriate to your character or the situation. We've also added a number of new spells via an override, such as Teleport and Baleful Polymorph.

*Giving people more to do during off-hours is one of our chief concerns right now. We're currently implementing a system that will populate the world with random areas to explore each reset, in order to make each walk in the woods potentially different.

When would "on-hours" be, exactly? I'd love to play on this server but there's not a single other person online.

We've also added a number of new spells via an override, such as Teleport and Baleful Polymorph.

I thought to add that there are a few types of teleportation available on Andrune:  Shadow Paths, Faerie Paths and a third one that I've only seen once or twice (Planar Gateways or somesuch?).  Shadow Paths are the products of the various Shadow/Shades spells, and while they're probably the easiest means to come by (at least for Arcane spellcasters), they're also the most treacherous; there's a small chance of creating a bad Shadow Path that harms anyone entering it while not taking them anywhere, and there may also be a very small chance of botching the spell and creating a shadow who immediately attacks the spellcaster (though I myself have never seen it happen with my Sorcerer; but I still try to keep her buffed up before trying to open a Shadow Path, just in case).

Teleportation leads to one of several destinations, which you can choose and set through your Spellbook menu beforehand.  It's convenient for getting around, but I still make a point of walking or riding between places here and there.  And for those who enjoy riding and mounted combat, Andrune makes full use of CEP 2.4's alternate mounts; in addition to the usual horses, it's easy enough to purchase riding dogs, dire wolves and giant boars as well, and even more exotic mounts (including unicorns, griffons and nightmares, all of which I've seen ridden on Andrune) are available through roleplay.

*Giving people more to do during off-hours is one of our chief concerns right now. We're currently implementing a system that will populate the world with random areas to explore each reset, in order to make each walk in the woods potentially different.

The Underworks area beneath Avendel (Andrune's capitol city) already has a working prototype of this system in effect.  With every server reset, an alternate exit from the sewers randomly appears in various locations; this exit may lead to one of three places (that I know of...):

• Valor's Rest (a forsaken cemetery once devoted to Andrune's fallen warriors, now left to ruin and plagued with the restless dead).
• Queen Medb's Court (a welcoming plaza in the city, where a benevolent druid tends one of the Trees of Life and sells its wondrous healing fruits and nectars).
• Cumberland Road (a twisting slum menaced by a cutthroat gang of bandits and their mighty bandit king, Archibald).
• More?

Cumberland Road is my favorite among those randomized destinations; it's challenging for a mid-level character, and you can easily get swamped by bandits--or zapped to death by bandit mages--if you're reckless and unprepared.  But if you survive the bandit rush and triumph, the rewards can be great.  '<img'>

So what other plans do you have for this random destination system, Numos?  ':wizard:'

Gonna give this thread a bump, as I'm a big fan of the server.  Probably the best CEP-only server I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of 'em.

I joined to try this - not sure why I never came across this PW when it first advertised - but I'm always looking for places to relax.

Character wise, I've had no need to leave the city, arriving soaked from my venture to the island after the boat crash. What I've enjoyed has been doing the single player quests that open up the information of the unique setting to the player, which leads from one location to another in the city, without the need of any sort of risk, and providing experience for doing so.

It wasn't until I ventured into the cellar of the Blue Moon that I grumbled loudly. The spiders were different, compared to rats we've all come to make fun of, and the setting with the webs and spiders lurking along the walls and ceiling to ambush you was inventive. But when you suddenly come face to face with 15+ goblins, with sneak attack, in a room where the bottle you're asked to return can be found, it ruined the atmosphere for me.

How did all those goblins get there? There's no secret passage into the cellar for them to appear from, which means they must have entered the Blue Moon and gone downstairs unnoticed. Offer quests for new players to follow is a wonderful idea, and it expands the world and the vision of those who built it, but creating such a roadblock for first time players is downright rude.

A small number of goblins with sneak attack, great. All of them?! Smarten up!

I dropped quickly. If the halfing woman wants her bottle, she can go down and get it herself!

Introductions to a PW should be just that. Overpowered enemies during an introduction tour of the world is never recommended, especially when you're leading the player by the hand to show off the content.

Unless I venture outside of the city, such risks should not be available to any new player on the server.

Otherwise, I've avoided the location and the completion of this quest for the time being.

With that said, I've enjoyed creating and dressing up the character. I've encountered two DM's while I've been online, and both offered assistance, while one created an encounter with an NPC. The city is dressed up well enough and not overly done to cause hiccups with too many placeables or wandering NPCs.

Tailor shops offer a means to uniqely customize your character, as available in many RP worlds, without the need to go to some OOC room. Although the world does make use of CEP 2.4, the customization is limited due to no other customized HAKs by the builders. The options though, are more than enough to remove one's character from the duplication look seen elsewhere.

If the goblins in a cellar are any indication to the strength of creatures outside of the city, my character may never leave the safety of the surrounding wall.

Now that's a plus, even though I'm not impressed with the over-the-top strength of creatures during an introduction quest. In my defense, I enjoyed the spiders. They caused enough damage that I required healing, a sense of panic, but not immediate death as the goblins.

This general fear adds to the comfort of the city, and the hesitation of venturing outward on my own. The goblins could be brought down a tad, with only a select few being able to sneak attack, while leaving the others as general goblins. Inserting a hidden trap door in the cellar to insinuate the goblins did indeed come from elsewhere, could introduce a low-level dungeon that requires assitance by teaming up with other players, but if not, still allows a new player to complete the quest given. This is where many sneak attack goblins could be encountered - in their natural enviornment, scurrying along tight tunnels and wickedly dark passageways - rather than some dead-end cellar.

Player count has been below average. I've played on Cormyr Dalelands for over two years, and it will usually top 15+ players at peek times. That said, the unique design and history of Andrune does hold my interest, that I will certainly return as a player in the near future.

FP!
