Arenthyor - Roleplay Server with Action

               www.arenthyor.com

"Hey there,

Let me get you an ale.  There you go.  Take a big sip and get comfortable, for I have a tale to tell.  Not long enough for that frothy drink to get too warm, mind you, but one that I think will get you to the edge of your seat wanting, nay, needing, more.

Yes, it's true.  The rumors are correct.  Arenthyor is live.

What is Arenthyor, you ask?  Tis a good question.  Lean close, now, for the secrets of the lands of Arenthyor will be laid bare for you so that your disbelieving ears can behold the truth...
 "

Arenthyor is a world rising from the catastrophe known as the Riftening, which ripped the land in twain.  In fact, an age and more has passed since then and life, changed as it is, has moved on.  What was catastrophic then is only tragic history now.

The world has changed. Physically and socially. Just prior to the Riftening, Elves and other fey races retreated from the land and disappeared, abandoning all others to the strife caused by the catastrophe.  Today, they are only rarely seen on the continent.  For the best, most would say, for even after an age, distrust and hostility still run deep against the ancient race who once were the undisputed and unabashed masters of the realm. In the wake of the Elflight and Riftening, survivors have suffered a hardscrabble existence and are only now beginning to build stable communities of their own while the once proud elven cities lie in rubble and ruin.

The land has changed. A horrific scar, known as the Great Rift, serves as a reminder of the day when everything that was became no more and turned one contient into two.  Survivors mostly fled to the new eastern continent, known as Arenthyor, abandoning to utter chaos that which became known as the Veiled Lands in the west.  These days, rumors of beasts which existed only in nightmare and myth before, are now common campfire talk.

Magic has changed.  Once the sole province of the land's fey stewards, magic has been rediscovered by the "lesser" races.  However, the wounding of the land that caused the Great Rift also wounded the arcane energy of the land.  Magic has become unpredictable - it can stutter and die or spin out of control without warning.

Destinies have changed. From the ruins of the old world, new powers rise. Serving the light or the dark, the lure of Power, Prestige, or Fortune drive opportunistic adventurers to brave the capricious Fates and roll the dice with their lives while the gods themselves watch in eager anticipation.

Win or lose, the fate of the new age of Arenthyor rests on the scales of destiny. Waxing or waning. Rising or falling. Ascending or descending.

How will you change Arenythor?  Better yet, how will Arenthyor change you?

"There, now.  The tale is done for the telling.  I can see that you wish for more, yes?   I thought so.  Finish that ale now, friend, for there's more where that came from. "

We quietly launched just about a year ago and have spent the time playtesting the different systems and continuing to expand/improve.  We now feel like we're ready to build the community.  Initial player feedback has been very positive.

Shortly after we launched, we were interviewed by the NWN Podast team, which you can hear here for a bit more background about the world:  http://www.nwnpodcas...hyor-a-new-age/

See our website for haks, forums, and news:  http://www.arenthyor.com/

Thanks to those who have already joined!  Looking forward to seeing everyone in-game.

I gave your world a try late one evening. I'm a sucker for any place I can play a kobold, what can I say? '<img'>

Anyway, it's not bad but needs some work (or else I missed something...). In any case, the destiny system is neat but for certain ones if you select them to check what they do (through the dialogue) you can't go back. From what the sign says nearby you can't exit the conversation with her, so you are forced to take one you might not want. That really could use a fixing.

Additionally, my kobold was considered a good halfling (actual alignment was lawful neutral) and had to start with a halfling deity (Yondalla). This was a bit strange, though the area I logged in had a temple where I could change it quickly at least. Really would be nice to be able to pick the deity you want/fits the character right off the start.

The thing that really turned me off was after exploring the first cave and grabbing a quest, I exitted the cave and proceeded to get slaughtered by 2 lizardfolk poisonmasters, a dire bear, and a wyvern. While I know the module is meant to be challenging...seriously huh? I don't think even a group of four level 2s (which I was) could handle that.

I checked the cave again and that was the only way out. Not sure if it is intentional but...didn't make for a good impression. Rest was pretty well done though I'll say. Might stop in another time.

               Aleron,
First off, thanks for taking the time to try the server.  Welcome!  Secondly, thanks for the open, honest and, above all, constructive, feedback.  I'll address your comments and what we've done to fix them.    Hopefully this response will allay any concerns and demonstrate our commitment to the player community.

Overall, Arenthyor is a hard server, intentionally so.  We believe that nothing of value is ever gained easily.  Thus, the encounters are hard.  However, it should not be impossible or overwhelmingly frustrating with an appropriately balanced party. Above all, we strive to create an immersive roleplay world where life-threatening danger lurks around most corners and while there is magic to be had, you treasure it fiercly when you find it.

You mentioned 3 things in your post:
1)  Difficulty reviewing destinies in the opening conversation.  We recently updated that conversation to make it more user-friendly, but have been experiencing occasional instances where the conversation wasn't displaying the options properly in-game.  Currently you can choose among 21 different destinies for your character (with plans for more) and this is a lot of information to digest, so we broke it up across multiple pages, which seems to be the source of the issue.  Based on this comment and our own testing, we've reverted back to a modified version of the original conversation.  As a result, you should be able to redo any of your decisions during that initial conversation with the Sister of Fate, Lakhesis.

2)  A kobold is a halfling??  You're right.  Halfling subraces weren't properly being recognized in that same conversation.  This has been fixed.  You'll now be recognized as the correct creature.

3)  Area difficulty for monster subraces.  Your concern about the CR of the area outside the monster caves is valid, though there's a method to the madness.  Yes, the CR of the area just outside the cave is significantly harder than a party of 2nd lvl characters could handle (based on your comment, I guess its a good thing you didn't run into any grell, too... 'Image).  We debated long and hard how reasonably close to other civilizations to put a cave full of monsters, as it wouldn't be suffered to exist for long.  Also, many monsterous subraces have higher ECL ratings with abilities that make hunting in those areas more balanced.  Ultimately, we decided upon its current location as being best suited for the roleplay-oriented world we're building as it is sufficiently far, but within reasonable travelling distance, to other communities.  That being said, it does create some, um, difficulties, for lower level monster subraces that don't have many innate abilites (e.g. kobolds).  Soo...based on your feedback, we updated the monster caves and added a new area that allows you to navigate significantly closer to the areas that are more CR appropriate, but without needing to actually relocate the caves.  You'll still have to haul a little arse to get to "safer" areas, but once you figure it out, it should be easy enough.

Again, thanks again for trying us out.  Send me a note on the forums (www.arenthyor.com) or via the e-mail form on the homepage with some times you think you can be in-game, and I'll see if we can find a mutually convenient time to overrun the land with kobolds!

Thanks for the response and will log in again soon when I get the chance to give it another try. Know it is tough starting out and bugs have that wonderful way of worming their way everywhere.

I also figured the encounters were a bit off in some way since I don't think any level 2 character could wrestle a dire bear with a rusty spork. '<img'> I'll look forward to this update and take a peek again soon. Good luck with your launch and gathering players. The server does show some good potential. I have found that there is indeed a word limit to conversations and had it written down somewhere and like a idiot lost it. i think it was 14000 words and then it started to go wonky and then had to seperate it into seperate convos as well.

Just some simple FYI is all...

14000 words is the equivalent of 20 pages in MSWord.  That's huge!

Randomized Dungeons - Arenthyor's unique system of randomized dungeons ensures that you'll never get tired of running through the same old scripted dungeon over and over again.

------------

I'm really interested to know how this was done.. if not on the forums in a PM?

Sure, Jenna, send me a PM.  Happy to share the details.  If you want, you could hop on and I can show it to you in action as well.  May make more sense that way.  It has a fair number of different parts to it.
