Seeking a new PW with balance of RP and Action.

               Hi-lo people.

I've been out of NWN for a couple years and am looking to get back in with some old friends... but we're seeking a sort of server I haven't been able to find for some time. The best way I can describe what I'm looking for would be to explain the server we used to play on that has (long) gone offline. (I'll preface this by saying I'm not looking for this exact server again, and I am more than willing to compromise on most things.)

The server was called Legacy of Ilmarra, and it was a roleplay server with very loose rules and a small but tightly knit playerbase. The things of the server that I loved and want to find again:

Full freedom in RP - It was the perfect sandbox where creativity was nurtured and prized. Plotlines could involve or do just about anything and characters could be anything you wanted them to be. This meant people had a mixture of ‘serious’ characters or sometimes ‘joke’ characters.

Friendly, laid back players -  Since we were in a sandbox where anyone could be anything, there wasn’t a whole lot of worry or analyzing of roleplay.  If all parties were having fun then all was good. I’d like to find somewhere where fun outweighs general roleplay taboo.

Large, explorable world - I am an explorer at heart. I love to scour the server high and low, checking every corner, finding every secret nook and cranny. I love eyecandy.

High magic, high fantasy - I’m itching for a taste of some real high fantasy. I’m craving a world where animals talk and trees are alive- and sadly my closet doesn’t lead to Narnia. I wanna sink my teeth into a world where the heavens and hells could come crashing in and epic is the name of the game.

Subraces or even (in some cases) Body Tailors - I want the freedom to choose from a large handful of races, or maybe the freedom to craft myself some goat legs and play a satyr when the mood strikes me. This sort of falls under the ‘full freedom in rp’ thing.

Grinding/Fast Leveling/Lots to do. - I like to play the game for the game and I’d really like a server where the leveling pace is quick and grinding is not discouraged. Where I can make the choice of having a character just go bash things, or make ‘dungeon nights’ with my friends where we go and explore through a deep scary cavern and slay the baddie. I want to be able to choose what kind of experience I want.  I want there to be plenty to do without a DM around. Player housing (Hunter’s housing system is my favorite '> ), banking, crafting, the previous mentioned exploring or slamming monster faces in.

Roleplay - Okay, here’s where I know I’m asking for too much, but I’d like all the above (I know I’m all “I want I want I want I want” >.>; ) to come with people being in character. I don’t ask for too much, I’m not really craving deep epic characters with 90 page backstories and the most superior RP of all time, but I’d like to be able to know everyone I approach will keep OOC in brackets, and have something to add to an IC conversation.

Well, it’s a pretty tall order, but there’s what I’m craving! Here’s a list of things I’m not looking for at this moment:

‘Heavy slow and Serious’ Roleplay servers - It’s not that I don’t love you guys, but I already have my ‘serious’ server which I love very much too! I’m just a two server kinda girl. I like to have a balance of two to get my fullest NWN experience.

‘Adult’ servers - I am not shy or prude by any means, but I am not seeking an ‘adult roleplay’ server. I am fine with servers that contain it or servers that have 18+ rules, but it’s not really what I’m looking for.

As I said, I’m more than willing to compromise on pretty much anything here, so don’t be shy in throwing ideas at me! I’m just looking for a place to log on and have fun. '>

Welcome back to NWN!

Aenea might be a good fit for you.  It's an action server, with role-play initiated and controlled by players.  Even those that aren't into RP will usually make an effort to give RPers a chance to play their own way.

Full freedom in RP

Characters can play pretty much any role they wish.  Aenea isn't a Forgotten Realms world (or other published gameworld), so there's custom background and lore, but we're very open to different character concepts.

Friendly, laid back players

Got 'em.

Large, explorable world

Lots of places to explore, lots of little details, and yes, lots of eyecandy.

High magic, high fantasy

Don't have trees walking around (besides treants, twig blights, and shambling mounds), but an area with sentient talking animals will be added in the near future.  The aim in Aenea is for "believable fantasy"...there's magic and all sorts of odd locations, but its supposed to make sense.

Subraces or even (in some cases) Body Tailors

There are over a dozen custom subraces for PCs in Aenea.  Some players modify their armor (in-game or via custom item) to give the appearance of goat legs.  Heads and phenotypes can be changed in-game (as can portraits, descriptions, and soundsets).  PCs have the option of picking from a list of alternative appearances later if they want (for odd shapes like pixies, satyrs, bugbears, etc.)

This sounds almost like Aenea.  Leveling can be fast or slow, depending on how much you want to dedicate to battle.  There's also xp granted just for exploration.  Most of Aenea is designed for your choice of solo or party play, usually without a DM.  Players can purchase housing in-game, then submit their own area design for the interior via email.

Roleplay

Aenea is designed for player-led roleplay (it's not enforced).  There are some players that are playing just for the action, others for the roleplay, others for the mix of both.  Very friendly, pretty much everyone will at the very least preface OOC talk with "//" (which also switches text color a bit to set it apart) so as to allow anyone that wants to stay in character.  If they don't have anything to add, they'll usually be on their way somewhere already and won't bother those trying to RP.

These definitely don't describe Aenea. I'm the creator and I'm not a serious roleplayer all the time, and my server is open for anyone to play (even those kids whose parents allow them to play games where player characters go out to commit home invasions (you know: go into a monster's lair, kill it, & take it's stuff)).

               I'll throw World Serpent Inn out there for you to check out as well (www.worldserpentinn.com). We're not a perfect match, but overall I'd say pretty close. Generally everything you mentioned though we do try keep a slight tab on the really crazy races just to keep a more believable and consistent setting.

Speaking of, there are dozens of allowed races (genasi, drow, tiefling, and on) with the really exotic stuff by request. Magic level is medium I would say (max of +5, with +4 and stats available in stores). The server has haks for appearances on characters, clothing, custom music, tilesets (with free appearance/clothing crafting). Additionally we are currently working to implement the PRC for more classes, feats, spells, and options in general for players. Leveling is definitely above most other servers I've seen and we are definitely an RP server (though everyone can play how they want, sometimes you just need to bash an Orc skull in after all).

We're a smaller, tight-knit and friendly community. The server itself is based around the World Serpent Inn which connects to all corners of the Multiverse which means you can explore all sorts of different planes (air, fire, rokugan, eberron, Sigil, and more) or if you prefer there is Raven's Bluff in the Vast for good ole Forgotten Realms. Plenty to explore whether you like planar of a more grounded setting in the Prime.

               I would have to recommond the top two listed above me as well. I wish we would fit but the grinding/leveling comment would not be us at all. Everything else we have spades of including a very tightnit Community of dedicated rpers and Staff. SubRaces. In game body editors. All that neat stuff with talking animals and many plants that do talk to those of the Nature faith.

Yet we dont have the easy leveling and it takes close to a year to hit 20th with us and even though we have been around since 2002 when PWs and NWN came out we have a very low number of Epics.

I would check out the two mentioned though as WSI and Aenea sound right up your alley.

I may know just the place - my favorite dwarf PC there is named Firkin Alechugger, a favorite human PC is 'Daht Greelar' a pyro-mage, but there are many other PCs in my collection there with much more serious names, the RP is good and the tools to enhance RP are second to none. Unique tools such as the Immersion Tools, and other systems all built to enable your vision of the PC to be manifest on the server. Got wings? Your PC can fly! Werecat? Can jump and climb better than most anything and can even rest in a tree. Other examples abound.

The server I have in mind offers high magic and high fantasy at epic levels, and more mundane adventures for lowbies too. Your PCs can speak with animals, and druids have spells that can waken the trees at need. Body tailor tools and our policy of accepting requests for subrace types from PLAYERs via our forum ( http://aldohral.forumotion.com ] - in one such case a PLAYER requested a subrace on Sunday and was play-testing the prototype the following Monday. We DMs can even endow your creations with custom powers.

There are Areas suited to most any level PC here, and we are adding new quests all the time so your options will expand with time, not exhaust themselves. The server features a custom Player Owned Housing system that allows you to custom furnish your POH locations, custom banking (copper,silver,gold and platinum coinage used), and custom crafting par excellance! You can grind if you want, do mostly as you please, we ask all to be courtious and stay IC unless using the standard //  or OOC indicators at start or finish of line and we are all human so we excuse the occasional error too.

The server is named ArgentumRegio running the custom world/module 'City of Dohral' and using CEP 2.1 or better (2.2, 2.3 and 2.4 all work). The server is online 24x7 suffering essentially no lag, no crash and requiring no regular resetting. DMs greatly enhance the opportunities there, but the PC who befriends local NPCs will find quests with time and familiarity with the NPC (e.g. get to know the NPC and the convo options change to offer quests related to the NPC - but usually not available to strangers). With over 1200 Areas there are lots of places to explore for all levels, there are no 'training wheels' here, so your PC can get in over his/her head, this means the PLAYER should 'play smart' and shy away from places that 'look too much' for your PC / Party. Good sense prevails here. Likewise, your PC matters here, you will find PCs can do things here based on their race, class, skills, feats and other factors... examples include functional stonecunning for dwarves, wilderness lore for elves, find/use hidden trails for Rangers, carousing for Bards, etc..

This is a server built to be as much like traditional PNP D&D - and features are included on the basis of 'do they add to the game immersion/RP?' Examples include food, you can live off the land, you can poison food and drink, you may be accosted by predators near water sources, your skill in cooking increases with practice, meat can be dropped if fleeing and has a chance to distract animal predators from fleeing quarry too.
