In the mood for something more Action-y
« on: March 18, 2011, 02:30:06 pm »

Hi! I haven't been to an Action server in ages. Wonder what the scene's like nowadays, so I'm looking for an Action server or Action-oriented RP server.

Must-haves:

1. Haks!
I'm bored with the usual stuff. Give me something fresh! CEP at the bare minimum, alternatives preferred.

2. Easy start, scaling difficulty curve
I want a server that starts out easy, then ramps up in difficulty. I don't want to get one-shotted by random ranged weapons or chased to death by wolves that run faster than me from the get-go, then turn the server into a joke the moment I get a powerful ability like HiPS, Dev Crit or Wail.

Turn-offs:

1. Excessive subraces

I know this sounds mean but I feel like I'm in a zoo when I'm partied with a Minotaur, a Half-Dragon, a Pixie and a Kenku =(

2. Excessive uberness
Legendary levels, god levels, +20 weapons and full heal potions that are more common than mineral water are all big turnoffs for me. I'd like it if a server can keep things sane.
That's more or less it, I hope my preferences aren't too unreasonable. '<img'>

You may find ArgentumRegio to your liking, it has many features quite unique and a very pnp feel, not to mention, plenty of action.

Hope to see you online, please do the tutorial if you visit. Many custom systems require about 15 minutes to review in game.

66.232.100.90 cep2.1 or better, an amazing place.

If you haven't played in Aenea, you might want to take a look.  While you wait for the haks to download (they're full of good stuff), you can browse the website and the forum (yes, we have both) to get a feel for the world.

Aenea is an action server with player-initiated and led roleplay (it's not enforced).  PCs start at 3rd level, or 2nd if taking one of the 17 custom subraces (don't worry, they're not too farfetched).  It's set in a custom gameworld, and has and uses a very large collection of custom content.

Difficulty ranges from challenging at lower levels (pay attention to your environment and your use of area effect spells, and don't be too proud to run away to fight another day) to dangerous at epic levels (going into the demonic Dark Realm can kill even a 40th level character if he/she is overconfident).  Some encounters scale based on party level, but not all of them...Aenea isn't a fantasy land where all the same baddies magically get easier to fight because you're weaker and then get stronger because you you need more XP per kill...it's a fantasy land where you might find tougher baddies because you happened to walk through the forest during a full moon or you might find a few more of the same baddies because you went out looking for trouble.

If you have played in Aenea, but it was ages ago, a lot has changed and been added in the last few years.

               Hello OP!

I have the NWN1 community over at Xfire and I suggest you take a look at our page there.

http://www.xfire.com...s/superfly2000/

Amongst the servers that figurate there I would say you can find the most action on Evernight and then in falling "action-degree" Ages of Nordock, Pirate Isles of FR and Shores of Winter (with the last one being more RP actually...).

About HAK's I kind of agree with you to an extent. What also is even more important is the general design of the PW (at least for me). Some servers like to throw in a lot of HAK's in an attempt to make the server look interesting....but it takes more than that.....

Only Shores of Winter has HAK's on it but I think you'd be surprised what a pair of new hands in the toolset using some of the not so common content from the original game can do.

I am all up for chatting on voice or normal, discussing servers and whatever.

I think both Eyhe Kandee's and Amethysts Dragon's fit the bill nicely. My own might be a gray area. Though it's an RP server, we promote adventuring heavilly and do our best to scale challenges early on. Forum linked in my signature. Both of the above folk have stuff few others have and are always worth visiting though.

Well thats a short-sighted. Haks doesnt mean that you actually really found this there. Having a CEP2 with milions of new models doesn't mean that they are used. Its about the builder's skills and fantasy. There are hak-less servers with more features and unique stuff than any hak-heavy one. Because their developers had a fantasy.

I think I that "Diablo - the Dark Vanderer" is one of them, though it didn't suited to me. Their IP is 71.225.71.254.

If you want to hear my personal feelings and experiences from this server, send me PM. Otherwise try it '<img'>

You're welcome to try Sigil: Planar Legends. Although, the subraces part won't hold true. We're planescape. Planescape has them. '<img'>

               Hello Aelis Eine.

You could try Legion of Darkstar: The Sword Coast Adventures.
It is located in the PW Action section of Gamespy.

We are currently seeking some new players at the moment.

I'm pretty sure we fill most of your requirements.

We are a mix of action and roleplay, and we use cep2.2 as our only hak.
Our module is pretty easy to start, and has dozens and dozens of quests in all level ranges. Some are easy, and some are quite difficult. We have our main quest 'Return of the Time of Dragons', which is still being built, but it is currently about 60% done. It starts at level 1, but it quickly increases in difficulty, and is designed for level 40 characters. At the moment, the first main dragon boss of 5 is awaiting your challenge, with the second one nearly complete. This quest is designed to be quite difficult, with challenging combat, and some nasty puzzles to challenge your brain as well.

Our server mostly uses stock NWN items, and some custom ones. The max for weapons and armour is +10. We do have a forge that adds some damage to weapons, but it is mainly for high level characters, as the items all have level requirements.

As for feats like hips and dev crit, they work well in some places, but not in others. Our server has turned off the fail save when rolling one, so dev crit loses it's effectiveness at higher levels. This allows us to make bosses critable, without them dying when rolling a one.

We do use full heal potions, but for some quests, you are really going to need them. We do have a limited amount of subraces, but they are appearance only and mainly used for roleplay. Other than drow, most are not even used.

I hope you will come and give our server a try.

Sometimes it's not about the builder, but the player - the ways they can customize their characters with haks, like clothing options, streamlined classes... I even remember one server that completely overhauled the combat system. I understand where you're coming from though - there's a lot of legacy content in CEP that I'm not a fan of, like the palette swaps and shields retextured with Microsoft Paint gradients. That's why I stated I prefer alternatives - custom hak compilations, over CEP itself.

I checked out Aenea. At first glance it seems nice. I'll get back to it when I'm done raging about two stupid mistakes I made at character creation. Nothing to do with the server itself, I'm just not in the mood to think of a third character name ><

I actually tried Evernight before making this thread, Superfly. It's pretty good if you don't mind the lack of haks. Sadly, I do, that's why I made this.

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions! I'll try to look at all of them

I can agree with the troll here. Well, I don't necessarily agree with calling someone who wants haks 'short-sighted', but I DO definitely think that some people overrate haks in general. CEP, in particular, is enormously overrated. All of the genuinely detailed and impressive hak servers that I know of do not use the CEP at all - They only use the nice haks which are relevant to them, and most of the best custom content (especially tilesets) is outside of the CEP. With CEP, you're getting around 5% good stuff, 95% crap. A lot of amateur builders praise the CEP, but I've never heard an experienced builder say anything very positive about it.

Also, a lot of builders (especially amateurs) have no idea what you can actually do without haks. It is perfectly true to say that there is a lot you can do with the standard NWN resources. The Lost Dale was a great example. Arelith is a decent example. Narfell is another. Some people have pretty much no knowledge of what the standard NWN resources are. I've heard people say, even recently, "What, no CEP? So I can't have cloaks, horses, sea caves or castles?" They honestly have no idea how much content Bioware included in the later patches.

If you look at Arelith, which is entirely hakless and also the most popular NWN server around, I would estimate that they only utilise 25-35% of the content available to them in the standard NWN resources.

To respond to your original post, Aelis Eine, I'm struggling to think of a server which meets all your requirements. For some reason, most very hakky servers tend towards having uber stuff and exotic races. I'm the same as you - I like to stick to FR lore and I hate to see +5 items everywhere, people casting Epic spells every minute and more dragon-kin than humans walking round in a simple human village.

But, some examples:

Narfell. Very low magic (+2 items are extremely rare, +3 non-existent). No crazy subraces. No haks. Low action (PvP isn't allowed at all)

Arelith. Quite low magic. No excessive subraces. No haks. Quite low action.

I'm struggling to think of a low-magic, low-subraces, hakky server. I guess FRC maybe, but I don't really consider them a hakky server because although they use CEP, you see very little custom content in their mod and it's actually much more basic than Arelith's.

Most properly hakky (and attractive) servers I can think of also unfortunately have needlessly high magic/levels and excessive subraces: Myth Drannor, Cormanthor, and then there are the joke servers like Styss where everyone is a Level 40 freak of uberness.

Actually, I will recommend Ravenloft, I guess. They use some custom content (tasteful, I find, and it really adds to their mod), and it's reasonably low-magic. No real uberness, and while I wouldn't quite call it action-orientated, it's almost that.

I think the CEP-only servers are worse offenders than those with custom haks, but yep, I've been having trouble finding a place that fits.

As far as magic level goes, my preferences are probably more towards mid magic. +5 items are okay in my book, so it sounds like I might prefer Cormanthor or Myth Drannor more than Ravenloft. Thanks for the suggestions!

I tried it for a bit. Seems promising, and I really like the idea of using the Neverwinter city from the OC! One thing seemed a little off though - for a PW Action server, especially one designed for level 40, the exp rate seems a little low. 100 orcs to go from level 2 to level 3 ':pinched:'

Probably no real point trying Myth Drannor, because no-one really plays there anymore. Basically, MD used to be great - one of the most immersive RP environments around, really. It had 20-40 players on regularly. But, around 2007, it fell into the hands of a bad admin (Ariel_T). He started to ban people for minor offences, and people got ticked off pretty fast. One group split, around 2008, to form Cormyr & Dalelands, a server which I have rarely tried but which gets a high player count (might be worth checking out). More lately, a group left to form Cormanthor. This really destroyed Myth Drannor. They still had 10-20 players on regularly in 2010, but a huge chunk of those people quit, to work on Cormanthor. Kind-of a shame what has happened to Myth Drannor, but when a server gets into the hands of a bad egg, that's what can happen.

Cormanthor is probably worth checking out. I roleplayed there for a few weeks, and quite enjoyed it. There is a little bit of strife in the community, with 2 players quitting recently because of general unfriendliness. But, I suppose, this is a problem on most NWN servers. You will probably find it hard to integrate, as a new character/player. Most people there do play hooded characters who stand around saying very little to anyone outside their clique. Sound familiar? The same occurs on most NWN servers, IMO. The module is very nice, though. You said you wanted to see fresh stuff - You will definitely find it here. Probably, tilesets and interiors that you've never seen before. Visually, Cormanthor is probably one of the best modules around.

After I spent all that time downloading haks. It's empty alright, ouch.
