Baaleos...

Being totally honest - does anyone really care if a server is falsifying their player stats.

It would certainly seem so, because it has spawned a 3-page-long discussion.

No it has not...most people are in disagreement one way or the other.

You just proved his point. People care. Some are passionately for it and some are passionately against it.

"Cheating is an act of lying, deception, fraud, trickery, imposture, or imposition. Cheating characteristically is employed to create an unfair advantage, usually in one's own interest, and often at the expense of others."

Enough said, I think.

More than enough said. But there are some serious trolls in this thread, and responding to them sort-of empowers them. Don't feed them.

At this point, who is to say that these servers actualy are using anything to add phantom players. It could well be gamespy, messing things up as usual..

I was thinking that too. Some of the posts in this thread are laughable, particularly those suggesting that it is somehow acceptable and desirable to use this exploit. I mean, come on.. When is tricking people ever cool or acceptable?

It seems that nowhere is free from trolls these days. I'll offer the same advice: Starve them rather than feed them.

What is bad for the community is the refusal to be competed.

Really, new servers, even if how well they are done and contain the latest contents available (in opposition to a lot of old and populated servers), they have no chance to reach an acceptable player base... unless they advertise.

Not advertising on this forum or on nwvault ... lost players dont frequent those... but:

- On other server (but that will get you banned very quickly)
- On gamespy (but... even if it is the place... you will receive a lot of hate messages)

So i perfectly understand that some people here dont like that we boost our player count.

That said, Sinfar has been growing in arrow since it been running (6 months ago). We now have 30+ players at peek times.

For those have haven't realised it yet, to get a server populated, you have to work A LOT (like more than you build) on inviting people. Then if you have a good module and there's reasons for them to stay, they will as a lot of visitor are staying on Sinfar.

All way to advertise, as long as they dont interfere with the game play of other server (like a greifer would do), should be considered fine. It is even perfectly sane to do so... It will keep the development of multiplayer servers active... There's so many old servers that get no updates these days and one of the reason is that their owner feel that they done what they initially wanted... do better than the server they previously played.

this:

We like to moan about griefers. Well, at least (most) griefers (sometimes) give us something to do. These weaselly servers are just bad for the whole NWN community.

Is like comparing something that increase the level of the game vs something that decrease it.

Nowaday, theres very few servers that reach a decent player base to be fun and challenge the most populated ones, which is a problem. The cause is obvious... less players and a almost the same number of servers. Persistent world owner that keep their server that is totally oudated, up, are much worst to me... If i was not certain that Sinfar was not of a decent level, i would not say that and i would not fake the player count. A server that is (bad|bugged|outdated|abandonned) and that represent itself as any other PW with 0 player just give even less chance to new servers.
Solution: let people advertise the way they want so that players that would enjoy playing a new server can find their way and not end up on one of those ~200 (bad|bugged|outdated|abandonned) servers.

Anyway,

shameless promotion: http://z15.invisionfree.com/sinfar

In what way does artificially boosting your player count 'increase the level of the game'?

Also, you are directly interfering with other servers, because you're boosting your image ahead of other servers which are actually more popular than you.

Can't you just play fair, and play by the rules, like everyone else?

Shameless is the right word. You have quite a nerve coming here and actually advertising your server, but I can't say it surprises me. As many have said, what you are doing is spitting on the other server owners who promote their server honestly. How can you possibly justify lying? Actually, don't answer, because it's going to be another long-winded, egotistical ramble.

Anyone else starting to wonder if Quilver = Mavrixio? And it's just some lunatic plot to gain more publicity for Sinfar?

Dont you say that because you worry that we steal your players? Why would you say that if Sinfar was badly done.... player would simply not stay... and we wouldly simple look like a joke... people join sinfar and hope to find a server very populated and so well done... they dont really find the first point but they stay because the second is more than what they had in mind.

If the server is better than the populated ones and that players move to us then the game will be funnier. Higher Level mean more fun for me.

Also, note that this player boost wont stay permanently it is only there for the reason above.

You don't get it, and I don't think you're ever going to get it. You're a cheap trickster trying to rationalize his means.

I am a troll, hence the picture <--- and That is not false advertisement. What cracks me up, is the people who think they can tell others how to do things in a game, where its Main appeal is it can be tailored to whatever playstyle. If you want to run around naked as a blue gnome dragon, you can. If you want to build a mod, and host it for free to anyone who wants to log into it, you can. if you want new content, you can build it and add it to the game. Don't like how the OC AI works, DL a new one that works even better. Hate D&D?, well you can change that to something else with this game too. Out of all the wonderful dementions that NWN has to offer, the only rule, is: Do not try and make money from it. Now that is unbelieveable, when you look at every other game out there.

I don't actualy care that someone fudges on their servers player count. I don't plan on logging in to it anyway. I do however have a problem with people telling others how to do things, or making up rules that are not there. Bio-ware has no rule against this. Neither does Gamespy. Is it a good thing to do? well it did get a bunch of people talking about it. Did it add members to their servers, or take away other servers players? Doubtfull at best. The thing is after all these years with NWN, most players are staying where they are, that is why most empty servers stay empty.

This community has had its share of trolls over the years. Anyone who remembers the NWN2 trolling can tell you all about it. What we as a community do not need, is for anyone to tell us what we should be doing with this game. We know what to do with it. There are better things to do with your time anyway, because, as posted, they are not going to stop doing it anyway. If you can't handle how someone runs their game, then do not log into it. If you can't stand that this is allowed, then try World of Warcraft, or the soon released NWNMMO. there are sure to be all kinds of don't do this, or that, rules for you to enjoy.
