Running NWServer on Windows 7...
« on: March 04, 2011, 10:02:32 pm »

I was going to post this in the tech support area but it said I didn't have access. Anyways quick background I had my pw up and running no trouble on my old machine running windows xp. The motherboard went out of it. So my new machine runs windows 7. I have all my ports forward. I run it as administrator with windows xp service pack 3. I even went as far as turning my firewall off and I run my router as dmz. Anything missing? And yes I had my pw files saved and re-installed them as well. It loads fine and says running login at will but it's not showing up on gamespy or on my history list and when I direct connect it says server timed out. Also I can build in the toolset just fine and I can run from the F9 button with no loading errors or corruption messages. I also tried a couple of other servers and can play fine on them as well. For some reason it's not letting me host. Thanks for listening and hopefully someone can point me in the direction of an obvious oversight on my part.

Specs Windows 7 Home Premium
Processor AMD Athlon II X2 240 2.8 GHz
500GB HD
4GB DDR3 Memory
64 Bit OS
NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE

Soooo I purchased a dedicated server and can upoad all the mod files EXCEPT the mods db files...it says dbf not allowed? WTF? Spent another 29.95 on port forward.com set a staic ip and went to fwd the ports and it came up with an error saying my router timed out? So far after the server, pfwding and a new machine I am 130 dollars in the hole with no results....pretty expensive for a hobby....-signed- getting drunk and pissed beyond imagining '<img'>

To be honest, I don't think the Port forwarding services are required here. It's important that you check your firewall to make sure both private and public permissions are enabled for NWNserver, I know that sounds as obvious as "Is your computer plugged in", but you'd be surprised how many people go through a bunch of crap just to find out that one little "Public" box wasn't checked the whole time.

Well .dbf files are file extenstions used by a few applications and not necessarily as a database. For some reason your hoster is prohibiting it because of security or other reason. I would write to them first and find out why and if it is even allowed to use them. If not they might have a server policy to prohibit NWN from creating the files and you are in trouble. No dbf, no persistance. Good Luck.

Well, I suppose that it's possible that your hosting provider is limiting the sort of files that you can upload to your dedicated server, but it'd be the first time I've ever seen a TOS like that, and I've been in the business a while.

If your server is managed, I'd definitely contact them to see if they can help you get those files uploaded.  If it's an unmanaged server, then I'd try to upload the files to a different location on the server and the see about moving them where they need to be.

EzRemake is right that you probably want to go over your firewall settings and make sure that the requisite ports are open.  NWN requires UDP only and the ports that need to be open are:
  • Ports 5120 through 5300
  • Port 6500
  • Port 6667
  • Port 27900
  • Port 28900
Out of those, only the first range (5120-5300) are actually used by the game, and even then I'm not sure you need the full range, but you may as well open them all.  Also, check with your provider to make sure that they don't have a firewall blocking those ports further up the food chain.

Out of curiosity, what version of Windows is running on your dedicated server?
