How to start a server?
« on: October 04, 2010, 09:27:18 pm »

I just want to start a simple server so me and my friend can play through the main campaign. I remember the problem I had last time is I had to open some ports or some **** which is why I couldn't do it the first time.

Courtesy of the Neverwinter Connections' forums:

NWN firewall/router HOWTO

Lots of good stuff there that's set many many many people down the road to success. '<img'>

All you really need for port forwarding are the following either a dedicated or local PC as host:

Name  Port Range   Type   Server/Host LAN Static IP
NWNA  5120 to 5129 TCPUDP 192.168.1.12
NWNB  6667 to 6667 TCPUDP 192.168.1.12

There is really no need to open any more ports than absolutely necessary.

               Alright, cool.

Thanks.
edit-
One more thing real quick. I want to play vanilla basically for ol times sake, but he's buying his dimond edition. So do you think he'd be able to play my server if I had a version of nwn with no expansions? Also what if I don't install the latest patch's?

I believe that "he'll" need to be at the same version of NWN as you the host are, regardless of which if any expansions you have. Odds are that you should both get the latest patches just to be safe. I know that in the past on PWs, folk that updated prior to the server updating were unable to join afterwards.

Well after opening those ports, my friend still couldn't connect to the server. I opened both Selene's ports, and that didn't work so I used the ones in the guide.

And yes I used nwnserver and loaded the module and everything, I could connect to it but my friend couldn't.

So whats going on here?

If you're using Windows XP and haven't mucked with the Windows Firewall yet, that might be getting in the way.  Just a guess tho.

Windows 7, and the firewalls disable.

Well I can see the server in my favorites and crap, but he can't even direct connect. So whats up with that.

I think you have an issue with your router's firewall. You might need to setup a static IP on your computer. It's a bit of a hassle, but it worked for me. Try looking at this link: http://portforward.c...static-win7.htm

If you think it's too much of a bother, you could always run your router as an Exposed Host (demilitarized zone) while you play NWN together, meaning you are running without your router firewall. If you opt for this one, be sure to atleast activate your Windows firewall and allow NWN access through it. I don't really recommend it, but it'll work for sure.
