               As stated in their forums, Cormanthor's Administration has set Friday, September the 24th as official launch date for their new roleplay persistent world!! the server will provide the players a full new module with lots and lots of areas to explore, a stable administration and dm staff, and a lot of planned module updates after the very first launch!!

               I logged on and was pleasantly surprised by both the quality of roleplay, and the quality of the custom content and building.  I don't normally endorse servers, but....This one's worth looking at.

Launch day had almost 20 players on for good chunks at a time, which is impressive.

               Player Review of Cormanthor 

Hi, I figured I'd do a review of this server, as I've played here for a little while. I've played NWN since it was originally released, and have played & enjoyed many different persistent worlds. I'll do my best to give my purely opinionated review of Cormanthor.

Gameplay - 7

Death is quite lenient - you only lose 50 XP per level and 100 gold - and this does not effect you if you are level 3. 

There are a bunch of dungeons to go to, and most are fairly doable if you do a little roleplay and find yourself a party. 

The magic-level  for itemization is most certainly low - as far as I can tell, the highest bonus you fill find on an item is +3 or +4. This does not, however, mean that said items are rare - indeed, I found myself swimming in +gear quite quickly. It just means that the maximum strength of such equipment is lowered.

They have introduced a few new prestige classes, but I scratch my head at the balancing of them. For example, they have brought in the Eldritch Knight and Mystic Theurge from Pen & Paper. The Eldritch. Knight is an arcane caster with full BAB progression, and the Mystic Theurge is a caster who gets both cleric and wizard spells. How they plan to balance these classes - or why they would choose to include them at all - is beyond me.

Roleplay - 5

Obviously, player-quality of roleplay is not something that a PW can necessarily control. However, I will discuss a few things that significantly increase immersion.

Cormanthor features a plethora of new emotes, as well as a social-stance animation set. They also have a robust language system that is quite fun to play around with. 

The server seems to heavily support player-caused world-changing events, which is a breath of fresh air after having played on so many servers where they absolutely refuse to acknowledge the actions of their player base, in the idiotic cause of sticking to 'canon.' Cormanthor breaks away from this norm, and claims to allow players to shape the server's history.

An immediate downside that I see is no real rule surrounding "permanent death," or at the very least, "character consequences." Without such, it is often difficult to have any form of player conflict be meaningful outside of spurts of PVP now and again. If they plan to have players shape the server around them, they should also be planning on figuring out HOW to handle character conflicts, especially if they reach a larger scale.  Otherwise, the server will just become another level 20 stagnation fest.

Module Quality - 8

At the moment the module feels rather small. There are a few nicely designed areas, but once you get out of the immediate starting zone, Cormanthor has a very 'unfinished' feel to it. There were even a large swathe of areas that still had developer tags - fds_06 rather than "Featherdale - blah blah"

THAT said, the areas that are completed are very well made. There are some amateurish building mistakes now and again - areas that are left wide-open on the borders (and leading to no transition,) and other small things, and I do think they could push their use of placeables further - but overall, the build team seems to know what they are doing.

Custom Content - 10

Cormanthor hosts a variety of custom content which I was quite impressed by. There are a plethora of new spells and feats taken over from Pen & Paper 3.5. They also offer a few new prestige classes, as well as balancing changes to some of the base classes.

They also use a lot of the newer tilesets available on the Vault, meaning that the server overall has quite a gorgeous look to it.

Dungeon Masters - 3

This is where things get a little messy.
Cormanthor uses an experience points system that bars you from progressing once you have reached a certain amount. After this point, you have to get XP granted directly from a Dungeon Master to progress.

"Level and XP advancement: Characters will start off at third level. The maximum level attainable will be 20. There is no "correct" amount of time that it should take you to achieve each level: Some people level faster than others, due to countless variables. However, starting at level 5, you will not be able to advance in levels solely by hack & slash: You will require a certain amount of XP granted by DMs to advance to the next level, per the following table:
Level 5 (to 6): 50
Level 6: 100
Level 7: 250..."
et cetera


While they have a number of dungeon masters listed, it is usually difficult to find one actively doing something. What throws me off about their dungeon masters is that they openly play on the server as their player-characters as well, and often spend far more time on these characetrs than they spend on the DM client! For a server that DEPENDS on Dungeon Masters for progression, this seems like a huuuuge behavioral oversight.

 It is also worth noting that the Dungeon Master player characters and characters of the Builder staff make up the highest level bracket currently on the server. 

The problem here is simply that if you are not able to find a DM or somehow draw attention to your character, you will not be able to progress at all. I found very quickly that not being the center of attention all the time meant I fell behind quite quickly.

Further, it seems like the majority of Dungeon Master time is spent hanging out with other dungeon masters' player-characters, or their friends. I noticed that one of the highest level non-staff characters on the server is best friends with the PC of a Dungeon master's own PC. This doesn't immediately mean favoritism, but my eight years of jaded PW experience usually ends up at the same conclusion. You can make your own decision about that.




OVERALL, I give Cormanthor a 6.5 / 10.

The score would be much higher, but the main negative points are that it feels unfinished, there is no set 'character consequences' and the Dungeon Masters seem to pander to each-other and their immediate friends rather than to the playerbase at large. This server has a LOT of potential. A DM team can make or break a server, and if they can get more professional dungeon masters, the server can only benefit from it. If they can balance this with their fairly good module, then Cormanthor could become that 'special' module many of us have been hungry for.

               PLAYER REVIEW

I just want to start of with to say that this server is amazing. To come at this time and make a successful new PW is an achievment in itself. Big thanks to the builders, custom content gurus and DM's for revatilizing the game for us.

Svneati, I kind of agree with many things that you wrote but your grading system is odd so I will comment a bit.

Just want to make clear for players that they will not be "swimming" in +3/+4 gear. The highest I've seen so far is +1 and I have about 1 of thoose on each of my two characters after a month of playing....so to be clear...this IS a low level/XP/loot/magic server.

In general I think they have very well captured what low level/XP/loot/magic is all about. Perhaps it is even a little too low for me but the level of all things have been gently and proffesionally lowered all over the board. Some classes like bard for example have become a bit better, which was needed. There are some new spells but wizards have been a bit nerfed. All in all...gentle but still very enjoyable changes to the gameplay.



It is funny that you grade roleplay in that way. So...in your eyes...the more hardcore the roleplay and the more PC's can "change" the world the better? I don't agree there...I don't want a server where players just staying in the town all day talking. You have lot of roleplay servers that have that already.

Also that thing about "changing the server" is something that should not be totally left in the hand of the players. I've seen this in action and it doesn't end well. Now get me right...what I said was the players should have a chance to come with ideas for the world...but by no means..should the builders blindly go for what the players make up.

That about that.



The module....yeah...it is great kind of. This is the first time for me at least I see that custom content in action on the best way I have seen so far on a PW. CEP, Worms, Maxam, Project Q....its all there....and it is done as right as is possible.

Still...with custom content you will always have some problems. Camera going haywire at times and trees and other obstacles hindering sight to your PC, minimap not perfect, lagg (from haks?) and of course...the occasional "show of map".

A show of map is a map that really has no content or very little content but seems to be in place to "show of what we can do"...and in practice...just becomes more of a transportation of players through it. This is probably also due to some maps and parts of the server actually not being ready made.

As I said all in all gameplay and module construction is exceptional so I am only picking on small things there.



Small....yeah...could use some more questing areas at least :-P



Dungeonmasters are good. There are a bit too few of them in my timezone but I'll survive. It can be a little bit daunting as the DM's are actually integral to your advancement in the game...actually...they are not a big part of it...thats not what I meant....but if you're unlucky enough to not be able to levelup because of not enough DM quests....thats a bit irritating.

Favoritism. I think on all roleplay PW's I have seen favoritism. Either it was intentional or unintentional. I think on this server it is more the latter...or at least I hope so. I mean if you think about it...it is not so strange maybe...people that are alike will play together...

All in all I think the server is run with a fair hand and a small amount of favoritism does not effect me.

               I'm not quite sure I completely understand the point of this server. From what I've gathered, played briefly, and heard through word-of-mouth, it appears to simply be a split-off from another server. The roleplay is disappointing, at best.



The average character is not a character at all, but a caricature... a running joke, a series of childish puns and barely-veiled OOC references which pull me out of the immersion faster than I can say "True that, dude" in a regular, in-character conversation... {ruining everyone elses immersion in the process...} Perhaps what is most disillusioning about this concept is that this style is coming not from your average passerby, but from the dedicated staff.  For a server that claims players will have some interaction with the world and boasts high-quality roleplay, none of the players, or indeed, dungeon master team, seem to take their characters more seriously than a stale, overplayed joke or a tired, frustrating anime trope. Cutesy barely-grown up girl, skinny, Final Fantasy Cloud ripoff skinny warrior with a giant sword. Get out.



I suppose my point is that there are PLENTY of low-quality roleplay servers around - neverwinter nights doesn't need yet another grindfest with tongue-in-cheek roleplay in between. There are plenty of servers for that playstyle already. So I ask... what is the point? Why build an entire server just to pander to a circular playstyle? Where do we go to find some measure of serious, down-to-earth roleplay? What EXACTLY does cormanthor bring that is NEW and INTERESTING to the table?



It's possibly I logged in on an off-day. However, I am thoroughly unimpressed and disappointed by this supposedly 'new' server.
