anyone want some building/scripting help?
« on: August 26, 2010, 02:19:07 am »

I did a lot of this awhile back, and I guess I'm trying to get back into it. Thing is, I dont have my own server so building my own PW isn't an option, unfortunately. Just to give you a run down on the type of things I like to build/script:

* quests, preferably ones more interesting than rats in cellars, etc.
* giving even random NPC's at least SOME personality (varying texts so the same people arent always saying the same things)
* random encounters based on character/party level, with varying spawn locations, as well as having a chance to spawn non-hostile encounters (spawn camping? i think not!)
* messages sent/text strings sent to PC's describing their surroundings, to help immerse them in their settings
* customizing monsters (usually fairly easy, but important to keep things interesting, an example would be ghost spider magi...that's right...spectral giant spiders that cast spells)
* fleshing out areas with sound and visual placables to keep even simple areas from being too boring
* 'interesting' dungeons and areas, areas with more depth than spawning clumps of goblins over and over again (for example).

I'd prefer a forgotten realms PW since that's what i'm most familiar with (though its not a necessity), and a PW with at least some following.

Hey there Kossuths_Will, I'm passing this to my World's Developement team over on the Avlis PW. I have a link to the forums in my signature, our lead Producer's name is Madk@ on the forums should you wish to get in contact with them.

Good luck, and if Avlis doesn't work out for you, I hope you get a chance to spread some creative lovin'. '<img'>

Would love some help. We're set in the Vast, in FR. Your name looks familiar too.

some help would be so appreciated! Since I am in some dire need of help here!

Please if you are interested in helping The Forgotten Islands Server then join in on: http://theforgotteni....freeforum.org.

We are a PW server and located in PW story. We could really -REALLY- use some help since we are not that skilled in scripting yet.

We cannot thank you enough if you are willing to help us...

The World of Avlis is always hiring new builders and scripters for our team. I'll send you something privately!

cool looks like theres some interest.

to be fair, it's going to take a little bit to get back into the swing of things. i am quite happy building areas, quests, and developing scripts, so it would be a little helpful if those interested would tell me what, even if in general terms, they're asking for. also, if there are alternate tilesets, things being CEP, etc., being used, I will need to know that to make stuff compatible with what is already in place. i have a few pm's i will check here in a bit, but to be honest, i am a little bit limited in scripting ability, meaning that if you want the whole game engine re-written or something wild like that, it's probably out of my abilities. just to give you all a little bit of background, generally my scripting and building is geared towards the following:

* interesting quests, even at low levels.
* mood setting/environment.
* repetition squashing (random spawn locations, more than 1 way to finish some quests, etc.)

Most of this has come from joining PW's where I see potential, but things that could use improvement. For me, broken area transitions, doors that open but lead nowhere, and pointless NPC's standing around just dampen the RP experience.

So I just maybe wanted to help some good PW's maybe get a little better. Even if the PW doesnt end up using it long-term, at least it gives them an alternative. I'm going to start putting together a mod with some scripts in it tonight, and i can email it when completed to whoever wants it, and they can just run around in it and see what they think - what they like, don't like, etc.

anyway, time to get to work. thanks again for the interest, and if theres anything specific just pm me.

your link didn't work, sorry. if you have an IP addy I can direct connect to it and run around and check stuff out.

also, how many people run around on the server? are there typically at least 3-4 people logged on? just curious what the player base is.

Well, hopefully I didn't jump on this too late, as this is my first day back on the Bioware forums (and they've moved?!)

I'm the founder of an old Hall of Fame roleplaying NWN2 server, Obsidian Shore. (http://nwvault.ign.c...s.Detail&id=168) Myself and some staff and players are pretty sick of NWN2, however, so are considering moving to NWN1 and forming a server there. I do have a following, and some staff already, as well as some users who are eager to help and learn to script. I'm an experienced builder (the areas in the screenshots are mine) though I'm just getting used to NWN1, it's loads easier. Anyway, I'm rambling...

Our plans are pretty much halted now, though, since our host and main scripter just doesn't want anything to do with NWN1's "worse" graphics. So we're currently looking for a more than temporary host as well as a scripter.

I know it's a long shot, since there's established servers here asking for your help and our server is just in the planning stages. But, I'm very proud of the community I'm bringing with me, the excellent staff and players, as well as our unique RP style. We really respect scripters since we've always had a dearth of them.

If you're interested at all for the future, or in helping us get on our feet, please let me know. '<img'>

Thank you for the offer, and hope wherever you land, it goes well!

sorry this should be the right forum,

The playerbase is rather small at this particular moment, most of the time we got about 3-4 players on our server.

Its small but we are growing, we are all trying to make sure that people see our server and most people find it highly interesting though there are some slight malfunctions in the game but that is not taking away that they have fun to play on it.

OK so what I'm working on right now:

* random encounter tables: each area has its own encounter table. I went kind of old school, I think it was second edition where it had you roll 2d10 and the encounters were split up into common, uncommon, rare, etc. Also, there are some NPC encounters as well, so players will occasionally come across guard patrols, merchants, or even herbalists gathering. The encounters will be set up so that the likelihood of the encounter and the encounter tables will depend on how dangerous/safe the area is, and will spawn at 1 of 3 or 4 different waypoints. So spawn camping, etc. would be pretty tough on players.

* NPC conversations, behavior, and spawning. Not that it's a big deal, but having just a little bit of flavor or use for the random NPC might add some depth. If nothing else, the typical mundane NPC will speak one of a few different random things.

I would like to check that out too. We need to redo all of our spawn triggers anyhow. Are you using variables to assign spawn types?
