Looking for an RP PW (fairly low level)
« on: August 19, 2010, 08:47:02 pm »

EDIT: Apologies for the laughable formatting of this post. I hope it is readable.

Hi there. I’ve been lucky enough to sample a lot of high
quality RP servers (most recently PotM, Narfell, The Way Inn, Gallows Bird),
but my search continues incase there is one out there that fits my preferences
even more than some of my favourite servers. So, I throw myself at the mercy of
the wisdom of you, the humble NWN gamer. In predictable style, here is a
list of my preferences. Feedback from mere players is particularly valued. Of
course, I could be being overly picky and my search is fruitless, in which case let the tumbleweed and
sound of crickets commence!

I don’t want people to go to the bother of a point by point
breakdown, but any recommendations (plus a brief sentence or two on what points
it may not match) would be hugely appreciated - so thanks in advance.

Essentials

Players stay IC at all times (or mark OOC comments
((accordingly)))

Decent exploration to be had. A character can expect to
level without having to hit the same areas repeatedly.

Levelling is generally fairly slow and where the intention
is for characters above level 10 to be fairly rare (or non-existent) (for
example, implementation of a soft cap for levelling (i.e. decreasing XP for
killing monsters if you exceed a certain level)).

Where rules are clearly laid out and fairly stable (although
can be reviewed/amended after deliberation of course).

Full PvP enabled (i.e. not Party PvP).

Updated to the most recent versions of NWN & (if it has the CEP) at least
CEP 2.0.

Where I can look forward to being able to explore the
majority of the server in time even if I don’t desperately seek out uber gear (i.e. where it is
not mandatory to buy expensive equipment that is essential for survival when
tackling mid-level dungeons (e.g. expensive silver or +1 weaponry. I have had
experience of hitting a brick wall because my character cannot hurt creatures
in mid-level dungeons).

Where crafting type activities (if present) are not
essential or central to your enjoyment of a server.

Only the main races are typically playable.

Other General Preferences

Some element of player consent required for PvP.

Semi-permadeath after a certain level (i.e. can only be
raised by a Cleric)

Significant XP is a possibility for characters that don’t
gain a lot of action/fighting XP (e.g. exploration XP or preferably decent
amounts of RP XP if appropriate).

The average dungeon crawl typically involves characters
walking and RPing.

A character’s level (and a player’s ability to level
rapidly) does not determine their notoriety or fame on a server.

Where dungeon difficulty is aimed at providing a challenge
for average RP character builds, rather than aimed at challenging min-maxed
powerbuilds.

Scalable monster encounters to freshen up repeat
adventuring.

Systems in place XP and/or loot wise to encourage party
play. With partying across a range of 3-4 levels do-able without severe
reductions in XP.

Relatively low magic setting (both in terms of items and in
terms of use of uber spells). No items that blunt the class skills of certain
classes (e.g. a belt of unlocking +5 that can be used by any class)

Where the healing skill and PC cleric magic are valued and
worthwhile and are the main ways of healing other characters (i.e. not lots of
cheap potions or free healing (remove disease etc)) available from NPCs. I also
prefer if you can’t heal all your XP when resting in the wilderness (or where
there is an item that allows a heal check to influence how much you heal).

Where investment in all skills (including social skills) is
valued.

Some restrictions on certain infamous character builds to
avoid lots of monk/shifters etc.

Some restrictions on playing Evil and rarer/unusual
characters (e.g. applications).

Language implementation.

A means of telling other characters ability scores (e.g.
some kind of examine tool to gauge how intelligence, compelling and strong they
may be).

Easy and extensive customisation of character clothing.

A semblance of DM coverage, Euro-timezones.

Between 5-10 players online at any one time is considered
ideal.

Good luck! I don't really keep up with the low magic/leveling servers enough to recommend.

Well Met!

Tales of the Silver Marches was first done way back in 2002. After four wipes in those years the current module was deemed a bit unweildingly and realeased and Stonewyvern asked us as Builders and Scripters from large servers ourselves to step in and redo it. So we did.

We used all new systems as well as some of our own and recreated a New Vibrant World...The Silver Marches.

Someone asked how friendly we are to new players and before I had a chance to respond you can see what the Player Base had to say right  here.

A collection of pictures

classes to choose from.

We are an older PW that was completely rebuilt by a few crazy dedicated numbskulls and it seems word of mouth has gone out and we find ourselves with about 5 to 15 people logging in daily. Hopefully the trend stays to the point we soon have 20 people on all the time. Of course that would be ideal though we could handle more than 20 at a time but then would have to seriously upgrade our Staff. I am hoping to stay about a 5 players to 1 ratio on Staff.

We are based in the Forgotten Realms area of the Silver Marches. No…at the moment we do not allow drow as our Underdark is not all in and really...not sure if we could handle a bunch of Drizzit clones running around at the moment. But we are working on it and Drow will be allowed soon as well as 60 plus other Sub Races.

Crafting, new spells…so many different fun little bits to see. Hope you take a look at our forums and our Site and let us know what you think. You can pm here or on the forums under the name TSM Junkie.

We are very close to Pen and Paper in rules and use only the CEP as our hak. We have swimming, teleport, deity and domains. We have Timed, Exploration and even Player Awarded XP. Heck...we have too much to list here but here goes.
I hope you all come and take a peek at us. We would love to have you.

Our death system was designed by a fellow named aptly Axe Murderer. His system allows it so players when they do expire have some options. They can wait and hopefully their erstwhile partners are carrying their bloated corpses back to a Priest to raise them back to life like Max the Miracle Worker.
Or in the Fugue they may take the portal back which will give them some options from taking random items, some vital xp, or gold. Guess you can buy your way out of hell so to speak, lol. You can even choose whether to go to a temple or to the spot you died.

Then our bleeding system is a bit different. When you’re smacked down by a wolf he might eat you or wander away. While a Zombie would of course dig in like you’re the last burger at Rosanne’s House. But a goblin might grab some of your gold or just maybe you gave that bandit as good as you got and he might hunker down a few feet away and try and heal himself up a bit in case that stubborn adventure gets up.

Basically like everything we have added we have tried for three things to guide us.
1/ Character Development.
2/ Fun and challenging…not just one or the other.
3/ The Player Base asked for it.

In that spirit we have installed and modified the following list of features.

Crafting/Tradeskills
Player Housing
True Forgotten Realms Deity System
Spell Storing Devices
Personnel Storage
Hide Level Character List on Start Up
Rest Menu Features
This needs mentioning as it lets you do a host of things dependant on your PC from Scrying to Praying.
Real Seasons and Weather
Real Time
Fishing
Actual Caravans to lead from city to city for gold
Teleporting
New Spells like Blink and Push
Very very unique Items
An intelligent sword that backtalk’s dependant on the area your in
A Robe of Time Stop that can do Time Stop when donned
   A Gladiator Net
   A Cloak of Levitation
Custom Summoning by domains, alignment, schools of Magic
True PnP Style Turn Undead (Heck control them if evil)
Dragon Riding
Horse and Ponies both for riding AND Pack Animals
Pack penguins (don’t ask I was drinking that day)
True Drinking Scripts complete with Dwarven Skills
Gambling from Black Jack to Roulette
Beautiful Designed Naturally Flowing Areas
6 Different ways to gain XP
   Combat/Quest
   Staff Given
   Player Given
   Exploration
   Crafting
   Timed

Basically like everything we have added we have tried for three things to guide us.
1/ Character Development.
2/ Fun and challenging…not just one or the other.
3/ The Player Base asked for it.

Players stay IC at all times (or mark OOC comments

We are a Heavy RP Server so you can often find players doing anything from Adventuring to attending a Magical lecture to the last big event we had was a Bard Play and Dance afterwards, lol.

Quote
Decent exploration to be had. A character can expect to
level without having to hit the same areas repeatedly.

There is 500 areas to explore with new areas added weekly PLUS even our players are welcome to submit ideas for quest and dungeons.

We have been up with the current Server Vault for over a year and have 4 Epics of 30 plus players who spend about 12 hours online to even get that high daily. Our average player level is 4th to 10th and it stays pretty consistent there.

We try our best to have Natural Flowing areas and make them doable by people who seek them out but while finding and exploring the dungeon are one thing completely surviving them is another.

We have some very highly specialized crafters on are Server who sell their goods and do a variety of skills so while not essential it is desirable.

We do allow Sub Races though…so might not be for you but we are Strict on them and only a certain number of races and do this in a very unique way. I hope you read up on it on our forums under the FAQ Section.

Semi-permadeath after a certain level (i.e. can only be

Players can do this on their own plus after 30th level (if anyone ever gets there, lol) we have Soul Coins and dying then  can and will be a semi perma death as well as for our Sub Races will have this system in place as well.

We had a bard who real life snatched away from us but she never set foot in a  dungeon and was quite popular for a long time and even joined/given a place at the Theater for her service to the city.

Some of our dungeons will never be done without a team. Some without magic, some with fighters, some with rogues, some with just pure luck. All of our dungeons are different due to dead magic, wild magic, random traps, monsters….it is a very lifelike PnP feel to it.
And with a Party you even get a grouping bonus on XP.

Relatively low magic setting (both in terms of items and in

ATM we only have 87 languages. And signs are also made now in languages as well.

See the CEP Tailors as well as Body Tailor as well for showing scars or hair growth.

A semblance of DM coverage, Euro-timezones.

With a huge flux of our QLs being teachers and such we are slower right now than usual on DM Coverage but higher on player count…sighs…we do have 2 Euro Time Zoned QLs though.

About our average though we get as high as 20 plus and as low as 2 at times but those are our averages.

Looking for an RP PW (fairly low level)
« Reply #3 on: August 20, 2010, 01:19:10 pm »

               Hello fellow gamer!

ArgentumRegio "The City of Dohral" may be just the server you seek. It is a RP encouraged server that does MUCH to encourage RP - from xp automatically awarded for RP (this visits rp xp awarded on next visit - use of PARTY channel and ooc penalizes the xp total you get from rp), to our special IMMERSION TOOL that allows you to make a custom backstory and have it impact game play, and much more.

There are over 1100 areas in this essentially lag-free module, this means you can explore all you like, and better, you get xp for each new area you discover so there is incentive to explore too! The majority of the server is explorable even without uber gear (tho not all of it).

The server supports up to level 40, but the intent is to make higher levels rarer than lower levels. This is done, in part by a semi-perma death system. You can earn extra lives by serving your god well or rarely by extreme rp (dm award), but not all PCs will have enough 'life tokens' to reach those upper levels. It means you have to RP like your PC values his/her life a little. '<img'>  Number of lives (base) awarded at start is based on CON like the old DnD rules did. Levelling is intended to be slow/mid here. All xp is adjusted by relative level of participants.

We offer a detailed PLAYER GUIDE and plenty of online support material on our server. Rules are fairly stable but we are still adding a few things (late late beta test atm and more than 99% of features work as intended). We don't plan major changes to our systems at this time. We do take PLAYER input and actually read, review and respond.

Full PVP in most areas.

We use CEP2.1 as our only hak, but it is compatable with PLAYERS using 2.2 or 2.3.

Crafting is available but not essential here to PC advancement or success.

We support all  core races but also a few others (for example, lycanthropes as PCs should FEAR the contagen).

It is a PVP (mostly) server, entering it means you take your chances. WE DO NOT CONDONE GRIEFING but we don't force metagaming (e.g. 'I know that is a PC so I'll play the encounter differently'). What this means is, if you are an assassin, and this is your mark, you don't have to go talk to them first, as IC Assassin at work means stealth will be used in all likelyhood. We DO encourage RP but we discourage the metagaming this way. This is not to say that your non-stealth types should do this, it is more IC for them to interact first.

Level five marks the end of our 'rules nerfs for lowbies' here and that counts for death penalties too. If your god is displeased with you, no coming back from the dead, so suck up, er, serve your god.

XPs can be earned here in a variety of ways, including class based methods, such as mages collecting tomes. As your PC gains levels and accomplishes deeds, they will gain in reputation, good or bad.

Most encounters are scaled, all are very well keyed to the area too. We seek to challenge all builds' PLAYERS to think.

Systems in place to discourage PARTY abuse.

Resting does not (generally) cure all damage in one use. Clerics and their spells are very valuable as is sucking up to , er serving your god to cultivate his/her favor. '<img'>

We have things you can do with ever skill in the game, even persuade and intimidate are useful (more than just in convos too).

Language implementation, even to the point of secret messages which can be found in books ... lets say you find a book, written in elvish by a dragon, if your PC reads it knowing only elvish, you get the story as written. If your PC reads draconic, you may find the hidden message. '<img'> We went very far in adding subtlety to the game with languages, this is just one example.

If you join our server, post this "A means of telling other characters ability scores (e.g.
some kind of examine tool to gauge how intelligence, compelling and strong they
may be)." in our forum - sounds like fun, tho we'll make such determinations skill/stat based for the PC user.

Customized appearances of PC and gear.  DMs in Euro and New World time zones.

The server is growing, we reach as many as 20 or so at any one time, tho there are still some empty hours. Never let '0' players cause you to fret though, just log in and OTHERS SOON FOLLOW. Lead and others follow. '<img'>

We hope to see you online soon. Come tour the tutorial area and see our swimming, climbing, flying, and much more. This place is very PnP style.

Hello friend. You could always visit The Mistledale Project - an RP server set in the Forgotten Realms. The main scope is the ongoing guerilla war between the Dalesfolk and the Drow. You can play as an evil Drow, or you can be a saviour of Mistledale. Or, you can have your own agenda.

We have only been out for about three months, so our community is still very small.

Check out the links below for more information. '<img'>

Very slow levelling compared to most servers but compared to alot of the servers we have low magic. Here is our Item Guidelines which we follow. We also increase their cost quite a bit. While we have some folks with some Stud gear it is comparable to a Epic from the books. It is a awesoem feat to even find a plus 2 item and a plus3? Probally would take six months to get at least if not longer.

1) The item MUST have a unique tag and resref.  Please make sure all of them start with your initials _itemname..  so John Doe would be jd_itemname

2) All items submitted should be created in a mod that is CEP 2.2 and 1.69 compatible

3) All items MUST be stored in the pallette in a specific place.  That place being

CEP 2.1
  Builder specific
   Special
    Custom 1

4) Do not submit seperate erfs for each item.  Append them all to a single erf.  Send me a rar file with 30 seperate erfs, I will pretty much just delete it and not bother.

5) Do not use any special unique on use functions.. ie no scripts can be attached to the item.

6) No item can have more them 3 special properties on it.

7) All items must have a description on them

ITEM GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSIONS

These will be things found in stores most likely.  More powerful things will be limited to crafting/special drops/dm drops

Gotcha. I'd agree you are low magic then, if +3 is as high as it goes. We consider WSI to be medium at +5.

I would have to say the EFU(Escape From Unerdark)  fits most of your list.

http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/

The one it for sure will not fit is the cep2.0 or better.  For the server requires no hak packs at all.

Players stay IC at all times OCC comments are frowned upon even if marked as OCC.  Party talk is also frowned upon.  Party formation is only allowed if players have a current common goal.

Decent exploration to be had. A character can expect to
level without having to hit the same areas repeatedly
.

Hmm, since I have not played this server since they have made it out of the underdark.  I am not really sure.  How ever you will not be hitting the same areas over and over.  Unless you chose to after a reset.  You character will most likely live out of the same area. Exploratition will be hard and something I would suggest you not do alone.  Most of the characters I played in the old server died from foolish solo ventureing.

Levelling is generally fairly slow and where the intention
is for characters above level 10 to be fairly rare

I have rearly seen a PC over level 6 on this server.  Even know of some who played council members and never got  past  4 level.  Being a chicken who ran from every fight gave him a long lived powerfull character in this game.  Not all power comes from level.

Where rules are clearly laid out and fairly stable (although
can be reviewed/amended after deliberation of course).

Yes,  I have never know them to change much.

Full PvP enabled (i.e. not Party PvP).

There are many factions in the game.  Sooner or later conflict will happen.

Where I can look forward to being able to explore the
majority of the server in time even if I don’t desperately seek out uber gear.

with about 8 PC on the old server I never seen all of it. exploration will be a challange.

I never seen any uber gear in my play there.  With the exception of one spear that i am not sure what it did.  My character died that day shortly after seeing it.  ( the Spear may have been a +2,  My guess is it was not even that powerfull)

I have had
experience of hitting a brick wall because my character cannot hurt creatures
in mid-level dungeons

I had the same on this server, However the Brick wall is meant to be there.  I ws being bold a brazen and ventureing in places alone. I should have never went alone.

Where crafting type activities (if present) are not
essential or central to your enjoyment of a server
.

I think limited crafting was starting to appear when i last played this server.  It will not be required.  In fact if you are playing a class that would not craft you may not even know it is happening.

Only the main races are typically playable.

Hmm,  You may want to check the rules on the server on this one.  I know that goblins where finnaly a non app race befor they left the underdark .  I think it was an expermint gone bad.  Even at that there where not many around.  You could engage in PvP with goblin PC's without there concent.   Where you have to have the concent of a human PC for PvP  or the OK of a DM.

For more information you can check out there site or try out there server.  It does take a lot of time to play the game correctly.  Most plots center around the players on the server. or there reactions to external events.   as far as player base goes, I do not think i have ever seen the server with less then 10 players on it in the last 4 years that I have known about it.  It normall had about 30 players or more every time i checked.  It may have slowed down a bit.  Today when i checked to make sure it was still running it had 16 on line.

Take a look at my list of example servers in my NWN1 X-Fire Community (see my signature).
