New MP/PW is it worth it?
« on: August 08, 2010, 03:06:59 pm »

               Hi,

So, NWN is quite mature now (I won't say old). I'm toying with the idea of putting together a new multiplayer module, with the eventual goal being to make it persistent. What I'd like to know is... Should I even bother with NWN1? Is it worth bothering with NWN2? What, if any, thoughts do you all have on "yet another" MP/PW module out there? Your tuppence worth of thoughts on anything else related is appreciated.

Cheers
swoods.

               It is old.

A true suggestion would be to find a server alread running and join thier Staff. I see about 40 servers or more listed. 10 of them have a base. I know that sounds harsh.

Though if you want to make something for the sake of making something then by all means make it.

I find the toolset a great outlet for my frustrations.

If you set out to make it because you want to make it then you will have fun.

Yeah, to be honest, those were my thoughts. It'd just be "nice" to make something that I can say is my own. I'm already a part of a big ish PW although there aren't as many active as there used to be.

I think I might just keep things to a bare minimum if I do anything. Just to see what I'm (in)capable of.

A PW takes A TON of work to create and manage. I'd suggest you go with a single player mod if you just want a fun side hobby that doesn't demand constant attention from you. If you're really aching to make a PW though, go for it. Or find a pre-established world you can build for and help out.

I wouldn't bother with NWN2 personally. Hard to build in, hard to play MP with, etc.

I'd say, if you have a vision, go for it.  Start small and expand as you have the time. Make it a place you would enjoy playing in.  If you can happily spend a few hours there a week, it doesn't really matter whether anyone else ever shows up or not IMHO.

Not to mention not entirely accurate.
But it does have a heavy learning curve.

I certainly think it's worth it.

NWN will be around for a while.

It's free, after you purchase the software.  Rare to see that in today's games.

It offers much of the same things you find in any other DnD flavored game, or WoW.  The graphics may not be as great, but they aren't bad.

Personally, I think as long as there are RP'ers, NWN will have it's place.  At least for a few more years.

Our PW, Markshire (www.markshire.com), jumped in to being about 2-3 years before NWN2 launched.  Well into the game's life-cycle.  We built up a solid playerbase and had hoped to make the jump to NWN2.  That didn't pan out so now we've taken up the building blocks again and have started to assemble our ideas for Markshire 2 in NWN1.

What I've found since starting this process is that the community for NWN1 hasn't stopped building.  There are HUGE improvements to the graphics/models/textures of tilesets.  Many of which rival NWN2.  Check out NWNCQ for starters.  There are some amazing new custom content developments out there.  Scripters have taken advantage of all that 1.69 (the final patch) has to offer which was significant.

So while some servers have died off, others continue the efforts to make NWN1 their home.  Our original server, Markshire 1 (see my signature) continues to see use.  I know there are new servers coming online frequently ... see the latest on the Vault .... New Gameworlds.

In my opinion, NWN1 is far from dead.  Like Diablo and Baldur's Gate before it, NWN1 will continue to enjoy a long life ... as long as BW and Atari let us.

Dude if you have to buy 10 copied of diamond and give them to people its worth it.  if you have quests and ideas to entertain people  you must exspress it.

Go.. go and do.  stop being a sissy.   Get to work.

Certainly, if you are someone who gets joy out of simply creating... then get working on it.

The worst thing you can do is not try IMO.  Regardless of which game you pick.

I've been running my own world for about a year now, and before that I was hosting someone else's world on my pc. I have to say, that it can be quite rewarding once you have a community. There can be drama between players, and there can be difficulties when someone doesn't listen to the DM. But on the whole it has been a tremendous learning and creative experience for me.

Maybe you'll find this of interest? '<img'> http://social.biowar...9/index/4593843

Personally, you can do some amazing things with NWN2 area-wise (see the link within that thread) but even as much as the graphics are "modern", trying out the NWN1 toolset after being used to NWN2...I was blown away. NWN1 is definitely superior, as far as buildings go, unless you care more about landscape shape than anything. NWN2 is incredibly slow, buggy, and has a tiny playerbase. NWN1's the way to go.

I agree with PeeTeeEm, NWN1 is superior to NWN2 in almost every way.

Though if you really want to start your own server....It is very hard.

The thing I mostly came across with is that everyone tries to build their own module but have no clue on how to do it (I was one of those people I must admit)

So the only advice I can give you is to join a community first, becoming one of the community's staff for a little while and practise on your own module.

But its your choise of course, in any case I hope it is gonna work for you '<img'>
