I really do love Caenyr. Excellent community, excellent DM team and a great staff. I seriously recommend taking a look around, some of the RP is down right funny. Just last night, a DM had transformed a player into a penguin as a joke. My guy came along, saw the "penguin" and decided he would kidnap it as a pet. I didn't succeed, but it was still pretty funny.                SuperFly_2000, I'm just curious if you still visit.  As one of the Admins, I'm always curious what a newcomers perception of our world is.  If you care to take the time, please send me a message here, I'd be interested in your views.  '<img'>

               Subscriber Update - February 2012

Happy 2012, Caenyrites! It's been awhile, as usual. I'm pretty sure this is more of a yearly update than a monthly one! But that's ok, it just means there is more to talk about (a WHOLE lot more) because it has definitely been a busy, busy time at World of Caenyr! So no more delays, here we go.

First, I need to talk about the biggest change that has taken place since my last update - me! I was hit by a car last summer, while jogging, and the experience changed my life. I'm all healed up now, but it made me realize very clearly how unexpected life can be, how you never know what day might be your last so enjoy every minute of it. As a result, I've finally pursued my life long dream of becoming a novelist. I've written plenty over the years, but never have I committed to writing a novel... until now. I've also come to believe it's time for me to take my Caenyr brand, take the mythos that so many have enjoyed over the last decade, beyond the gameworld and into a new medium. Therefore, my books will be Caenyr-based, starting with a series on Elvamir's story. Below is my first public excerpt from book one (still untitled.)

Perhaps this rainy night, at this inn, things would be different. He looked up at the dimly moonlit sign. His hands removed from the straps of his backpack to part the matted white hair on his face and shield his eyes from the downpour. 'The Dark Knights Inn' it read alongside the sigil of an ebony sword. The same mark etched into the ring on his raised hand and stitched onto the breast of his war-ridden leathers. Whether that relation meant a welcoming, however, was yet unclear. It was just as likely that his affiliation would be met with malice as it would with mead. There was also the matter of his race. Nevertheless, the hour was late, the weather ghastly, and his body exhausted. Given that the sign had not been torn down, the odds seemed in his favor. With a deep breath, and cautious step, he entered.

But even though I'm devoting myself to expanding the Caenyr story beyond the gameworld, it doesn't mean I'm abandoning it! It does, however, mean I need someone to help keep it alive and healthy. Or in this case, two someones - Zepp and Brutus! Both have been promoted to Deputy Administrators, alongside Laurel, and charged with managing the day-to-day operations for the gameworld. My ownership/leadership role remains oversight of Caenyr as a whole, managing the website and server, and control over the mythos (so History submission approvals, etc.) but for day-to-day activities related to the game those are the guys making it happen. And they are
doing an AMAZING job!!! So congrats to them, and now let me share with you some of their great accomplishments to date.

It would be wrong for me to start with anything other than their efforts regarding mod updates. In fact, since my last news post there have been NINE MAJOR UPDATES to the gameworld, with many smaller updates in between. While the Kingdoms of Tendril and Genocise were removed from the gameworld to help consolidate things (they still exist in RP, just not in the mod), there have been many changes, additions and improvements to make up for it! The additions of Frost Bourne, the Forgotten Crypts, and Torath's Lair to name a few new areas; the new systems for Gem Socketing, guards, respawning, and kingdom portals; Major updates to existing areas such as Maleneska Village and the Rheave Isles; Hak updates/additions, class updates, housing updates and so, so much more! If you haven't played in awhile, you will be overhwlmed and excited by all of the updates! Great job to Builders of Caenyr!

With big changes in the module have also come big changes in Caenyr thanks to a strong DM-led serverwide RP - the Betherak War. They laid seige on the Kingdom of Chail, and without a King to lead them the army, the King's Royal Lancers, was unorganized and unprepared to defend quickly. Most of the Kingdom fell to ruin, the hardest hit being the village of Athkalta and the city outlands, but even the capital of Chail-Anden itself was not without significant damage. Thankfully, the citizens and guilds of the realm united and fought back, but not without a price. Now they work to rebuild what remains of the once "Golden Kingdom" of Chail, but will it ever be as grand as it once was? In other RP news, two news guilds have been established: The D'issan d'Oloth, Caenyr's first Itheril-based guild and also our very first player-created guild under the Flexible Guild System established by the WoC Evo initiative! The second is the Vor'Shadar, a desert tribe forcused on the occult, and power.

To start off the player news, let me first welcome the new and returning players of Caenyr!

NEW PLAYERS:
Lia, Methius, vrolmar, ArbitraryNamingProcess, Anne, Thestus, Jared Swee****er, halcyon, Miscr3ant, Trip Fantstic, Ninjammer, Tall Papa, Rabbit_Tail, Ryder, Misty's Daughter, Creldest, Vilhien

RETURNING PLAYERS:
TheMonolith, Mardoo, Elith, Rex, Chikki Feet, Coercer, Arzhael, Sithenin, Maugoth, Sloth, Yithare, IirmaAdjective, Aristes, Spoon

Unfortunately, with all of the new additions and returning familiar faces brings the occsasional departure. To Drakvir, aka DM Shadow our DMS, we thank you for your years of dedication and amazing RP contributions to Caenyr. Sorry to see you leave, and hope you find your way home one day, we'll be keeping the door open for you my friend.

On our MySpace fan page there are new photos from the recent Minnesota and Chicago Caenyr Player Conventions, and also a new featured item from our Caenyr Shop - we have some deity-based jewelry now, for all you Caenyritas! Go check it out from the link on our website and also don't forget to follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/worldofcaenyr so you can stay up to date on all of the latest Caenyr news as it happens!

Lastly, there is a new screenshot and King's Poll on the homepage, and while you are there don't forget to subscribe to our newsletter!

A decade ago, Bioware held beta testing for an upcoming game, touted as a follow-up to the award-winner Baldur's Gate Series.

About a month before the official release, the May prior, a player named Noggy created his own module titled "Noggy's DK Mod." It was the birth of something that he could have never predicted would be around, and so popular, 10 years later. It was created for members of the Dark Knights online players guild, which he was a part of, but open for anyone to enter.

A few days later someone, another beta tester, did stumble in. He became quick friends with Noggy, Dredge, Ravenna, and the few other DK players, joined their online guild, and was soon helping shape the future of the mod along with them. That someone was Elvamir (me!)

Mid-June of 2002, Bioware officially released what would become one of the most acclaimed and loved RPG platforms of all time - Neverwinter Nights.

As players scrambled to the online modules, the player-created persistent worlds, Noggy's DK Mod grew significantly in membership. It rapidly started evolving into more than just a place for the Dark Knights players guild to hang out, it was shaping into a world and community of its own.

That's when, one night, Noggy, Dredge, Elvamir, and a couple others sat around their favorite table in the DK Inn (later renamed to the Black Lion Inn) and decided to pull the mod away from the player guild association. Noggy, Elvamir, and Rayn were chosen as the Admins.

It was decided to build on Dredge's "Torn Shadows" concept that he was already roleplaying, and create more guilds that the roleplay of the entire world would be based around. Right then and there Elvamir created the Black Hand, and Noggy created the King's Royal Lancers to oppose them. Three guilds, that later became 4 (The Circle), then 5 (the Midnight Company)...

The website was updated. Bio requirement was created. Many of the institutions that define us today (and many other mods that followed our lead!) were founded. And finally, the community chose a name.

Caenyr.

By the end of 2002, not even six months later, Noggy left Caenyr to pursue yet another PW creation, leaving Elvamir and Rayn to lead as Admins for WoC. Months later, Rayn would also leave for RL reasons, and Elvamir was left standing as the lone Admin, and leader of Caenyr.

A few months after Noggy's departure, that leadership would be tested, and so would Caenyr's resilience, as (while he was moving across country, just to make the timing even worse!) the company that hosted both the module and the website went under and all that was Caenyr was lost. When Elvamir got back online he found only a small handful of the community that Laurel was able to keep together and had rallied around some temporary boards, but with no game. Yet they all stayed positive, and roleplayed and spammed their brains out on the forums while Elvamir hosted up a game on his own computer and was able to get a new website established. That's when the look of the website as we know it today, began. It wasn't long until most of the community found their way back home, and many, many new players joined along with them.

By the end of 2003, World of Caenyr was awarded Hall of Fame status by Neverwinter Vault, and although it has gone through many ups and downs in the years since... here we still are.

That was the start of this incredible journey we're still on! The exact day Noggy started up that mod in May of 2002 is unknown, but on the 20th every year we celebrate our anniversary since that was our earliest beginning, and  this year we are super fortunate to celebrate our first DECADE as a community! 10 years... that is simply amazing, Caenyr. I'm honored in every way to say I am a part of this incredible community. The things I've seen from players over the years, well... they've impressed me beyond words. And the friendships I've made - they are priceless.

I thank each and every one of you for the honor of being your leader over these years, and especially thank you for all of the help you've given me. I did not do this on my own, not in the least. This place exists, and is still running strong, because of its community of players and the phenomenal Staff. You shaped this world, you keep it active and fun, and you continue to take it forward. I just kick you in the ass every once and awhile to make sure you don't stop doing those things. '<img'>

As a token of my appreciation, and that of the Deputy Administrators and DM's, we have a TON of very cool birthday activities planned between now and the end of the month! So get ready to enjoy...

  • A new, and very special, serverwide quest! It's already started at http://www.worldofca...pic.php?t=29850 so you should go participate asap! Trust me, you definitely want to be a part of this. There is a VERY special, and extremely AWESOME surprise in this one, and it's mod-update related. That's all the detail I'll give you (that the builders will let me!) about that. You will NOT want to miss this RP or what comes with it for you to enjoy, so jump on board the serverwide train and get ready for the ride of your life!
  • The 1st Annual Spammy Awards! That's right. Starting this year, and now every year on our anniversary, I'll be hosting (in-game) the Annual Spammy Awards. This first one will be next weekend (day and time TBA separately on the forums, along with the categories.) Who will win the first ever Spammy???
  • New portrait pack! DM Malice has been working on it for over a month and it's finally ready! I'll soon have it up on the DL page for you to grab! Thanks, Malice!
  • I'll be creating a 10 Year Anniversary banner for us, and I'll put it on some limited-time, commemorative swag in the Caenyr Shop (http://www.cafepress.com/caenyrshop.) So save your bucks and get ready to purchase some Caenyr memorabilia! (Remember, there is no profit made from any Caenyr Shop item, they are priced at the cafepress.com minimum, and sold only for the benefit of the fans.)
  • Anniversary spam nukeage! You knew this was coming. It does every year. Get ready for a reset to the Anniversary Spam thread, and a new name for the spam boards.
  • In-Game language system. Brutus has been working this side project, and for our anniversary he is going to make it a reality. True languages, in game, for those races that speak in their own unique tongue, and understood only by others who can speak it!
  • Website upgrade to PHPBB3 was decided on as part of the WoC Evo initiative last year, and I'm finally going to make it a reality as part of our anniversary. With the new forums will come a ton of new features for everyone to enjoy, while we take advantage of them to provide some improved organization and layout. And don't worry - you won't have to re-register and you won't lose all of your posts, all of that will convert over. And along with the PHPBB3 upgrade (or rolling out in the weeks following) I'll probably make several other improvements to the website to take it to the next level, for decade number 2!
  • As scared as I am to do so, I'll be posting a fairly large excerpt on the forums from the first every Caenyr-series novel that I'm writing. It may even be an entire chapter, I'm not sure, but a complete scene at least.
So there you have it, Caenyrites! Our way of saying thank you to all of you for keeping this place alive, active, and tons of fun for 10 YEARS! I can't wait to thank you all again in 2022!!!!!

After days of intense labor, it's finally complete. Welcome to the brand new worldofcaenyr.com. We took "Where Imagination is Your Only Limit" to the next level with this one. Happy 10th birthday, Caenyr.

Major new features

-The World of Caenyr Portal: Our website, community, forums, and game are now more integrated than ever before, and from one page you can branch out to enjoy any or all of it!

-phpBB3 Conversion: More forum features than you could have ever hoped for, all while significantly improving security from nasty bots.

-Forum Makeover: All new forum layout for better organization and faster access to the info you need.

-Improved Browsing Experience: A lot of work went into making sure you can use any browser without problems, access us on the go with improved mobile app access, and have an overall more pleasant interaction with our sleek, appealing new theme.

For more details on all of those, visit my Website Development forum and read all of the announcement threads that break it down to the next level. And for help, don't worry! Zepp has already started making tutorials, especially for the moderators (see the staff Discussion Forum), and has promised to be available to answer any technical questions you may have about using the new boards.

IMPORTANT - With all of this great change, comes some work for you guys. Nothing major, but there is some cleanup still needed and we also have implemented some adjustments to the AV & Banner guidelines to better support our new theme and goal of improved browsing experience. Finally, we are depending on YOU to let us know of any issues with the site asap, so we can get them sorted quickly. We've been pretty thorough, so I'm hoping there aren't any major bugs at all, but you never know. So, with all of that being said:

Here's what you need to do

- Resize your forum AV to 250 wide x 330 high or less - you can do this in the UCP as shown here or post in the artist assist thread.

- Resize your banner to a maximum of 400 wide x 200 high. This is the maximum for all banners in your signatures. This cannot be done directly on the forums so there will be one months grace - the end of June '<img'>

- Fix any links in your own threads. This can be done by simply removing phpbb2/ from the url.

- Fix any pictures you used in your own threads if they are broken. There is now a bbcode button right above where you type a reply to allow easy placement - left, right or centered. Laurel did fix some pictures in the histories as she went through her links. History writers may have to report the posts for laurel to fix as the History forums are not directly editable.

- Report any broken links or pictures that are not in your own threads using the report button found in each post Please do not pm the admins or moderators regarding this. Use the report function.

- Report any bugs or errors with the website (other than broken links using the report tool) in the Bug Reporting Forum.

- Give us your feedback! Post in response to this message and also vote in my new community poll either from my new poll forum or right from the Portal!

Finally, last but not least, I need to thank two very special people.

Laurel, while I was up coding the website, sorting all this madness out, thinking up all the crazy ideas, ignoring the universe and getting next to nothing for sleep, you were right there with me almost the whole time. You single-handedly took my vision and structure for the new forum layout and made it a reality, and from everything you learned in that process you even took the time to teach me the new phpBB3 stuff since I was busy working on all the rest. Can't thank you enough, it would have taken me a century to get this completed otherwise. Choco, a glass of wine, a big hug, smooches, and giant shiny blue token for you madam! ''

Zepp, it was your crazy post that got me to finally get off my arse and make this happen in the first place! I blame you! '<img'> But I also thank you, sincerely. Without your technical assistance on how to convert the forums I would still be lost, you helped me when I really needed it. And your work building tutorials and offering your assistance to the players for how to use all this new jazzy stuff, really means a lot. YOU ROCK!  ''

So there you have it, Caenyr. Enjoy your new home. The paints still a bit wet, so be careful where you spam. '<img'>

Updated the first post to highlight some great new features we have at world of Caenyr after going through a huge effort over the last couple months we call "Reconstruction" - a huge undertaking to remove complexity and out of character hassle and bring us back to having some good old fashion RP fun in game!

Any organization, in our case community, that wants to survive over time (we're more than a decade old now!) and stay fun and fresh needs to be willing to take a hard look at themselves and make major changes to adjust for today's environment. That's exactly what we did, and what a great difference it's made already! Here is a quick summary of our big Reconstruction improvements: (For more complete details on each one of these, follow this link.)

LEADERSHIP PLEDGES
Elvamir: I am going to be the leader I once was. I’m going to be the leader you deserve. I’m going to be honest, I’m going to be fair, and I’m going to be steady-handed and steadfast in how I lead. I’m going to have passion and love for this community and the roleplay within our world. I’m going to EARN back the title you once gave me, not just wear it as a badge but remember why it was given and live by it. I AM the Big Bad. I’m here to serve you, and lead you, Caenyr.

Laurel: I want to see WoC back to the RP hive of activity I came to and have loved for over ten years now. I will do all I can to contribute to and support the Reconstruction. I want to be your Shiny again; the one who is helpful and kind and understanding and cheerful. I want that to be a real nickname that means something to the community not just the fossils like me and a few others. That doesn’t mean I will be the pushover but that in every situation we face together I will try to make sure my attitude will be positive, optimistic and upbeat just like it used to be.

Brutus: I pledge to remember my friends, and give them my friendship, my camaraderie, as well as my IG time. I pledge to make Caenyr more fun, and less work. I pledge to remember who and what I am, and to not think for a moment that I am indispensable, or that no one has my back, and that I have to do so much, shouldering the world like Atlas as my banner portrays. I pledge to remember my team, and lean on them from time to time, to ease my burden as I try to ease theirs by building so prolifically. I pledge to make my herculean labors a labor of love again, and not solely of duty. '<img'>

MISSION STATEMENT
“To provide a dynamic role-playing world our community of players will love because they are free to have fun, choose their own directions, and exercise their creativity.”

LEADERSHIP & STAFF STRUCTURE
The staff structure for Caenyr will now be reduced and remade to be more focused, efficient, and centered on our mission statement of creating a dynamic role-playing world for the community. They are a collaborative body, coordinated at the top, and here to serve you, the player – their client. Caenyr staff now consists of the following four positions only.
  • Architect
  • Chronicler
  • Designer
  • Enhancer

DUNGEON MASTERS
The role of Dungeon Master will no longer exist for World of Caenyr, as part of the reorganization of the staff structure. In fact, the only “masters” around here now are the players. The functions that Dungeon Masters performed will be either eliminated, or split up as appropriate between the new staff positions.

KINGDOMS & UNTAMED LANDS
Kingdom Rulers will be very high level NPC's, not regularly present or engaging but still existing in RP. The Architects will control any major Kingdom RP or shifts of power there through those NPC’s. A general ethos will be established and posted for each Kingdom so their laws, culture, and economics are known by all (details to follow on the format of that posting in a later announcement.) Enhancers can play political or government NPC's within the kingdom to help instigate some RP, and players can politically plot and scheme within the kingdom as they wish, but in both cases within the framework of the established ethos. Kingdoms are also protected lands that cannot be conquered by players, but any unclaimed areas of the mod can be conquered. Conquering is a new feature being added to Caenyr.

FROM BUILDING TO DESIGNING
The module will now be updated on a more regular schedule for new content, and with a greater focus on bringing our history to life, responding to player role-play, and developing in-game systems that reduce the need of external rules and processes.

GUILDS
The concept of a staff managed and supported Guild (the out of character aspect of a Guild) is no more in Caenyr. Current guild RP still exists, but OOC’ly they will be converted to Player Groups (improved versions of Adventure Groups), which remain an option. The term "guild" will no longer exist except in the RP sense, if that is how a group chooses to refer to themselves.

KINGDOM CENTERS
Each of the major “Kingdoms” in Caenyr will have added to them a new area (village) that will provide all of the essentials any character (but with heavy focus on lower levels) would need. A majority of RP will now be centered in these new areas and then grown outward from there, throughout the Kingdoms and the untamed lands beyond their borders. These do not replace any current Kingdom RP or areas, just provide a new focal point for where people arrive at each Kingdom, meet up, interact, start adventures from, supply their goods, and so forth. A local “hub” or “home base” if you will. '<img'>

LEVELING
The process for leveling your character in Caenyr is getting a complete overhaul, to better focus on the RP experience, character development, and exploration of our world, but while still taking into consideration the valuable and sometimes limited time a player has. Everyone must level through the first 10 levels of their character, but now made easier and more enjoyable, and leveling the last 10 levels of your character is optional. This will provide the perfect blend of getting to know your character and the lands, those great interactions and experiences that come in the early stages of leveling, but allow you to opt-out at a certain point in case the process starts becoming monotonous, boring, and lessens your desire and ability to role-play.

RULES
Our rules are being reconstructed to what are truly necessary to protect and encourage role-play, and keep our community a friendly place to meet. They are more than just rules; they really are more like “values” now. They will continue to be enforced using the 3-strike system, but a slightly modified one. The new rules are as follows:
  • In-Game Guidelines (Covers leveling, PVP, and pick pocketing)
  • Community Behavior (Covers forum and social etiquette)

METAGAMING
There will still be no hard fast rule created for metagaming, because it's just too subjective and too easy to be accidental. However, we will improve our pro-active education to the community around metagaming (and other RP behavior), and include some reactive education through a RP "rehab" forum/program that any repeat offenders will be required to complete. Of course, issuing a strike is always on the table if at any point the Architects feel the player’s behavior is starting to cause significant grief to others, therefore violating our Community Behavior rule (Player Grief section.)

CHARACTER BIOGRAPHIES AND SERVER PASSWORD
Character Biographies & server password will remain in place, as well as changes to bio's requiring moderator review and approval. These are important for protected Caenyr’s lore, your role-play, and your fun. However, the following changes will be made to ease the process a bit for new players that want to quickly get in game and check us out without having to do a research project first.

HISTORIES
Our lore is a vital part of Caenyr, and a unique differentiator that draws people to play here. We need to ensure that our rich wealth of history and lore is well known, easily accessible, and celebrated.

FORUMS
Our forums are to be reorganized in such a way that it makes it very welcoming and easy for a new player to join us and existing players to get to the information they want and need without a lot of confusion or hassle (so they spend less time navigating on the boards, and more time RP’ing in game!)

I've been playing NWN since it first came out- and this is one of the best servers I've ever played on in my whole NWN experience.  I've been playing here for years, and couldn't think of going to any other server at this point.  Incredibly in depth and unique lore along with flexible rules and amiable staff make this a very fun place to explore.

Wow, I'm surprised I haven't posted in here before.  '<img'>
At any rate, I echo the above and support WoC.  It's an awesome world and community.  I've played a few PWs over the last 10 years, but WoC is the only one I've stuck with for a variety of reasons.
I've been away for roughly six months now due to my Masters taking up the majority of my time.  The new Reconstruction efforts have really piqued my interest and have threatened to tear me away from that.  '<img'>

Come play, you won't regret it!

2013 - The 2nd Annual World of Caenyr Spammy Awards

It's our birthday week! Thursday marks our 11th year as a world and community, so continuing the tradition started last year during our decade celebration, I will be hosting another World of Caenyr Spammy Awards. These awards are designed to recognize the great talent and community participation here at World of Caenyr! Here is a look at last year's categories and winners. You'll also know them by the awesome little banners that adorn their signature area here on the forums, indicating how many awards they have won. Maybe some of them will add a few more Spammy's to that banner this year!

And below are this year's categories and nominees. You'll notice that some of them have been streamlined a bit to make room for a whopping EIGHT new categories, including three that will be chosen by YOU! The poll for the Community Choice awards is already up here so go and vote!

The Spammy's will take place:

Date: Saturday, June 22nd
Time: 5PM EST (GMT -5)
Location: Poet's Lounge in Chail-Anden (In-Game)
Host: Elvamir Dy'ness
Attire: Your favorite character, past or present! Unless your character is nominated, then please join as them.

Hopefully this time can accommodate the majority of our players. I'd really like to see you all there!
