Quick question - Is there a way to measure the distance (preferably in pixels) between two points of a picture? The two points are on the same line and by measure I mean other than by actually counting them. If it depends on the graphics editor just say which editor. Thanks for any reply.

It depends on what program you are using, but many have tools that are used to measure or guides for the magnetic centering of the images.

If there are contrary subterfuges that allow you to know the distances.

One easy way to know the distance and crop the image just at that point, see the size and then ctrl + z to return to normal picture.

In PSP 7 or higher, I know there is a tool that lets you select a region, while you are dragging the select tool, you can see the distance in the bottom left corner, however, if you drag up and left, the number will be one pixel shy in older versions. I assume all other basic drawing software greater than MS Paint will have this feature.

Measure tool in gimp, click than holding down mouse bottom drag to ending point, release. Give your pixel count in the status bar along the bottom.

Thanks guys. Now I can easily check that all the shield graphics are the same width. I know that they are all the same height but I have my suspicions about the width of some of them. BTW up to roughly 1100 different design/colour combinations but I've still got the more complex ones to go.

Those look good.. since the back of the shield is wood. I think it'll look even better if you give the emblems a wood grainy texture to match the back. It'll make em look worn. IMHO

Harking back to permutations, If you follow the Rule of Tincture, there are fewer (but still 20 if my maths is correct). No idea whether that rule applies to Pern, though.

As I read the rule of tincture (i.e. I could be wrong) there are only 2 that are not allowed. Those two are the yellow combined with white because you are not allowed to have metals meet (white = silver & yellow = gold). It also says that they have to contrast with one another and as far as I can see they do. I have only left the yellow/white (gold/silver) ones there for completeness.

BTW these are just general battle (i.e. not for display or house crests) shields, not meant for Pern as such. From my reading of all the books I have on Pern I can't remember coming across such shields only knife fights.

Traditionally, colour-on-colour isn't allowed, either... but in fantasy, everything is permissible.

As a side note... Back in the old days of vinyl (although I hear that in some quarters it is now fashionable to have both the CD/download and the vinyl) albums were released with fancy covers. Back in 1975 Hawkwind released their 'Warrior on the Edge of Time' album (based on Michael Moorcock's eternal champion series of books (he provided guest vocals on the album as well)). This was one of those albums with a fancy cover. Even though it was only a single disk album, the cover opened to reveal an enlarged view of the exterior artwork. If you flipped this cover over it revealed (click image to download larger version) -

Hawkwind%20Chaos%20Shield%20sm.png

My impression is that it is a wooden frame covered with leather that has had the characters that make up the word chaos hot stamped into it. The frame and radials, which are apparently there to secure the leather, appear to be polished bronze. Finally, I have the impression that the central boss is made of copper.

Now I don't suppose anyone would care to make that into a NwN asset, would they?

Update - by the end of the day I will have (around about) 1790 coloured shield shapes. Next step colour the embellishments.

Little correction. I have now finished colouring the shield shapes and there are in fact 1627. I decided to not make additional 3 x 3 coloured designs as that would have been 210 variations (total 630). Instead there is one of each to be coloured only when and if needed. However in my previous post I accidentally counted them as having 42 variations each which accounts for the majority of the discrepancy in the number.

Just a little update. I am now up to 2210+ separate image files on this. Probably take a short break to catch up on RL stuff for a day or so.
