Glaives in NWN?
« on: April 29, 2016, 10:40:55 am »

Has anyone ever made a glaive weapon type for NWN?

I would be interested in somewhat acrobatic combat animations and possible throwing animations that show impact and return?

eg: like boomerang.

I would imagine that the engine could probably handle it to a degree.

The animation just has to encompass throw and return in the single impact animation.

Eg:

Impact Animation

Start ----------------------------------------------------------- Finish

Throw----------------------------Impact ---------------------Returned

The miss/dodge animation would be the same - the Impact in this case would have the glaive going to the left or right of the victim, and they would play the same dodge or parry animation as dodging an arrow or dart.

The return animation would then take over.

Glaives look sweet.

To paraphrase Crocodile Dundee: "That's not a glaive, this is a glaive." '<img'>

Ironically -

https://www.dandwiki..._(5e_Equipment)

A throwing glaive appears on D&D 5Edition wiki.

I know - strictly speaking, what I posted was not a 'glave' it was more like a Chakram or something.

The one in image 45 - anyone know if they return to user?

I do like the idea of a Throw and Return weapon that looks like a bladed frisby of death.

The ones I posted look sexier though. Lol

Well, no, but otherwise the animation is very convincing, I find.

It should be fairly easy to script a return-on-miss I imagine.  It wouldn't have a return animation, but you'd get it back.

Agreed, just have an on unaquire event create a new one and be sure that the weapon is a thrown item so that you can't retrieve it afterward, lol.

Thinking about it, this could probably be done with the throwing axe, just make it a non stackable and change the appearance, have a new one created in the PC's hand whenever he/she throws it.

You might also be able to script a check to see if it hits and ocaisionally have the item not return if you miss badly. then have the item created in a random location around the target so that you or someone else could retrieve it.....

Sounds like a fun idea....maybe?  '<img'>

<initiating sarcasm mode>

A sharp weapon that can be thrown and returns to the user? My where did that idea come from? Sounds a bit Feral Child from Mad Max 2 to me.

Obviously there is the Glaive from Krull.

There is a semi similar weapon from Xena WP, who uses a Chakrum.  However, this practical and historical weapon is circular, and can be used in hand to hand.

On a more practical note, all polearms are similar.  I would suggest D10 / x3 / 19-20 Slash and Pierce as basic.  Some might lack all those elements but could perhaps give +1 on a skill like parry or tumble.

Krull!!!

I enjoyed the movie but I really, really they'd have called the weapon something other than a glaive!!!

Could be that movie was the start of the confusion.  A weapon whose name is that of a different weapon, like "I grant you the legendary sword, named Morning Star."

Which isn't after all, a bad name for a legendary sword.
