Texturing the standard tilesets
« on: February 15, 2016, 11:26:51 pm »

I just found out that the standard city tileset walls spin/turn/flip the textures around some how when texturing.

The texture I was going to use can be seamlessly stacked on top or side by side. However the standard city exterior walls don't texture that way. So I guess I have to use a texture that can be spun any way and still match up.

Welcome to the fun world of mapping! I guess in order to reduce resources and effort, the original creators did that A LOT. You have to, eiher rotate/flip your textures, or change the model's texture mapping itself to fit it the way you want to.

Tonden: If you are searching for textures on Google, then always search for "seamless". Also, it's a good idea to specify the resolution of the search. You can also  do this in Google. I am usually searching for 512 x 512 or 1024 x 1024 textures. It's a problem with textures rotating. Solution to that is to make the texture seamless in all rotating ways. Also make sure the texture don't have any distinct features, like a black dot or distinct crack. It will make it look even more repeated. Is there a tool to make a texture (complex texture) seamles no matter what way they are rotated? Normally they work in the way, that the top is seamless to the bottom and left is seamless to right (eg. GIMP-tool). When rotating one by 90° it won't fit. I couldn't find such a tool and thus I edited a texture by hand to make it work this way = seamless regardless of the rotation to each other (cobble stone plaster), but that was a pain! ''

That would be nice if there was such a tool. However I have some textures that I really like the looks of but they aren't seamless if you start spinning/rotating them '<img'>

I use photoshop to make it seamless. There is a tool, the "offset" function. Basically, it takes a picture and mirrors it in all directions, like turning a picture "inside-out". So, all the borders get seamless, but the middle of the texture get wierd. That is however easily fixed with the stamp tool. '<img'>

If you have photoshop but don't know what I am talking about - read this: http://www.designbas...mless-textures/

GIMP will allow you to make a texture seamless as well, I've done it before using these directions: http://smallbusiness...gimp-28969.html

I've also used the GIMP Make Seamless filter quite a bit; the results may or may not be to your liking. Sometimes I do seamless in a single direction by repeatedly tiling the texture along the other axis before applying the Seamless Map, then extracting a texture tile from the middle. That is good for brick and plank textures, for example.

You can usually find some decent seamless textures via google as well. ShareCG has some interesting sets.

I think what you might be talking about is 4 sided textures, where an image can be rotated in any direction and still be seamless. I'm pretty sure the city cobblestone texture is made that way. I don't know of any easier way to make them than by hand, though starting with the above-mentioned methods will of course get you off to a good start.

Great discussion!

I unfortunately have nothing I can contribute except to mention other folks from the past that were absolute masters and texture modification.... Estelindis for one, DragonLady, Martin Elis, OMB, and a few others as well.  Great at generating or modifying textures to make them seamless and to generally make the given texture more fabulous to look at in game.  Anyway, just posting to help keep the topic alive and hope to garner more help and discussion by folks that know more than I do about it!

Hm, I've been using GIMP to create seamlessness, too, but if I'm not mistaken, it does it in "top-bottom/left-right" way, so the result might fail when rotated (complex texture). (Or did I miss something with the GIMP-tool?)

Something like YeoldeFog's tutorial find (good finding - the right direction) as a one click tool would be great.

Starting to pick up a retexture of the City Exterior that Pstemarie and I started back when we were doing NWN Enhanced hope to finish this time.

Well actually I dusted this off and started working on it again Tonden_Ockay because of a post you made in the Q thread about adding the new building terrain Boodah did for the TNO set, and this thread where you were attempting to retexture the Bioware City Exterior.

I feel your pain of trying to retexture this set as Paul and I had to basically remap almost every tile for it to look decent. All tiles are not complete as of yet and we also took the liberty of modifying a lot of tiles and adding a lot of new tiles to make this a hopefully very useable set for building large cities when it is completed.

Instead of pushing in on this thread any more I will be starting a new thread to display some of the new tiles and things that have been modified so people can track it as it progresses. This will hopefully be as good as Toro's expansion and retexture of the rural tileset and like he said it will be a labor of love and will take some time to complete.
