How to Flip multiple .tga files at once?
« on: February 14, 2016, 05:58:27 pm »

Hi all

Isn't there a program that will let you flip multiple .tga files at once? I have a boatload and I mean a boatload of .tga files that are upside down. So I'm trying to find a program that would let me flip all of these .tga files at once.

Irfanview is a free image viewer and editor that has a good batch operation feature that will let you do that.  (The "advanced" button in the batch processing window.)  For your particular case, you can either rotate them 180° or actually flip them across the axis.

Just be careful to check that Irfanview doesn't sneak any RLE compression in there.  Sometimes it likes to do that.

Use TGA Flipper, that is what it was designed for. I use it all the time.

TGAFlipper is the best.  CTP used that tool sooooo many times that it would be nearly impossible to count.  It truly is a life saver.  It was our general practice to use it twice, yes I do mean 2 times, on ANY TGA that was exported by nwnexplorer and also any TGA that we were not sure how it was generated.   The main reason was that there are more than one definition in the header of a general TGA, and NWN required an earlier version that what the newer tools created.  So, TGAFlipper would re-create that necessary header information automatically whenever it processed a TGA file, TGAFlipper also tends to adjust the physical dimensions of the exported TGA files to be proper x2 sizes, IE 32x32, 32x64, 64x64 etc....as odd numbered bits would totally crash the game engine..

SO, I totally agree with Tarot, TGA Flipper, is an absolute lifesaver and an excellent tool to utilize whenever handling TGA files.

Another simple note to folks in general with TGA files, NEVER export from DDS to TGA and then re-compile back to DDS.  ALWAYS keep the original DDS, and most preferably, keep the ORIGINAL TGA whenever possible and only generate that final DDS when you are completely done with making possible modifications to the original TGA texture.

I may be being just a tad paranoid, but I've used TGA FLipper twice on every TGA image I've released onto the vault just to be doubly sure that they have no rle compression in them. If this means that they are slightly bigger than they were before, so be it.

Absolutely the fastest and safest way to ensure a properly defined TGA for use with AURORA.  It is too bad that Bioware used a different format than industry standard for both TGA and DDS.

Was TGA as everywhere back then as it is today?

That's roughly the only reason I can imagine why

TGA was an industry standard for certain aspects of video production long before NWN came out.
