Photoshop Issues - Help!
« on: October 08, 2015, 03:29:17 pm »

I'm unable to reinstall PSE 1 because of a known bug that IE4-9 must be present (I have IE11).

So, I purchased PSE 13, only to discover that TGA is no longer supported!

I have the Adobe plugin targa.8bi, but it doesn't seem to be recognised. I'm running PSE  13 as 64 bit and have configured it to use the old 32 bit plugin folder as an additional source.

Now I'm completely stuck unless I regress to IE9 and PSE 1.

Has anyone got this working for Windows 7 64 bit?

Have you tried the following links?

https://forums.adobe.../thread/1232060

https://www.adobe.co....jsp?ftpID=1544

I use Adobe Photoshop CS Something or other - thankfully TGA support was not taken from those versions.

The less than ideal work around I can see is to use an open source solution such as Gimp, convert the TGA to another format, edit, then back to TGA via Gimp.

Thanks.

I already obtained targa.8bi from those links, but it doesn't work for me. PSE13 automatically installs as 64 bit - some sources say it won't run 32 buit plugins, though there seems to be some debate abiout this.

I'll try the gimp solution, unless anyone has a better idea.

You could use a virtual machine. Install the OS version needed (XP) and your old PSP in it and here you go. VMware used to had a free for non-commercial use VMPlayer, and Microsoft had his own similar product (Virtual PC) for free.

While my suggestion doesn't fix PS, it is simple. I use XNView for looking at textures and pictures. The same company makes another product called XNConvert which I make use of extensively because I tend to work with png files and only convert when ready to test the models in game. I then use XNConvert to do a bulk conversion of the png files to tga. If you are interested the download page for XNConvert is here.

@TR - thanks. I'll try XNConvert.

I notice that the XNConvert download buttons are actually at the bottom of the page - the big green Download button is for a different file converter.

@TR - XNConvert is definitely 5 star for ease of use and functionality.

The only issue I'm having is that when converting JPG to TGA, the TGA files appear normal in a viewer, but appear upside down in the toolset unless I run them through TGA Flipper twice. You mentioned in an earlier thread that compression can do this, but compression is turned off. Any thoughts?

On a slightly different note, I also have dds and plt plugins for Photoshop which no longer work. Suggestions welcome!

As far as I can see, neither GIMP nor XNConvert offer an option to output 32 bit TGA instead of 24 bit.

Maybe this is because JPG input has no alpha channel? Does working with png or similar allow 32 bit TGA to be converted, editied and reconverted?

As I habitually use tga flip twice to kill any compression issues I didn't realise this. My set up for tga flipper is that I have it installed twice, in successive folders. I do it this way to save time as tga flipper puts the flipped files in the directory you tell it to.

I can't help with the dds plug in and my only suggestion regarding the plt plug in is that there is one for gimp isn't there?

The lack of an alpha channel in jpg is probably the root of that problem. I have no such issues when using png files.
