The 31 days of MECHAWEEN!
« on: October 01, 2015, 12:26:44 pm »

So I'm trying something this year. Mainly, attempting to get out 31 creature models. Because while I've been part of the community for a while, my uh, creature model content out in the public is, well, there's, what, four things, all scattered across various CCC files? And I have a massive list of stuff that needs to be done that's, well, just never actually getting done.

This needs to be corrected. And what better inspiration than October, the month of Halloween? And what better way than a showcase of new, old, and just plain ol' weird stuff both dregged from my archive and created new for you?

So journey with me and whatever random NPCs I find lurking about my work-module as we experience THE 31 DAYS OF MECHAWEEN! (Patent pending)

First, we have, threatening my go-to mad mage Aeon... The Nightwing, a creature from Dwarf Fortress! (Expect a lot of Dwarf Fortress creatures)

Also for some reason sometimes its animations get a bit stuck and its jaw does that bugged thing the one in the back and the one you can't see offscreen are doing. Hmmm..

What horrors will join us tomorrow? Wretched beasts from the depths? Dragons? Tiny horrible things that exist to make other thing's lives hell? Something horrifying? Well, it might be horrifying by someone's definition. Maybe. But stay tuned!

Another day... And another horrifying monster! Unfortunately the levels of "Horrifying" are, as always, dependent on certain criteria. This critter is actually an incomplete CCC submission! This lil' fellow, or something like him, was supposed to find his way into the Oldschool content. But, well, back then I was using a bit more bat in him than now and it sort of didn't end too well.

For this creature to seem the worst horror it can, imagine you are a wizard! And suddenly... Your spells start failing. You can't figure this out, trying anything that makes sense to try to fix it, until you find a way to see invisibility...

And it turns out some sort of creature has basically been using your magic as its own personal buffet for the past few weeks

I will be honest, the original idea with this was to use the bat wings and head, to make it look more bat-like. But it turns out, take the Krenshar's head, do a bit of editing, and you get a... Well, whatever you'd call that head. I'm also keeping that Krenshar head idea in mind for another idea brewing in my head

Oh, and don't mind the blue fellow hiding off in the corner. He's having animation problems, but he'll be along in a few days to give you more Dark Sun critters. Tomorrow's HORROR is more of the fungal kind

headaches suck.

Thankfully, I planned for this eventuality with a backup monster from the MECHEON ARCHIVES, which aren't all that scary honestly. But here he is!

Long forum-goers might recognise this fellow from a while back. Well, he's finally on his way to a release

fungus related horror will wait for my head to stop trying to kill me

My head has recovered. Unfortunately, breathe in something from this next HORROR and your headache won't recover!

Imagine you're a Beholder, one of everyone's favourite eye-monsters deep underground. And you find the weirdest looking Beholder imaginable, almost as if it doesn't have a mouth and less like its floating intentionally and more just... Being there. So, naturally, being a beholder you attack it

ONLY FOR IT TO EXPLODE IN TOXIC SPORES

ncYrPjx.png

Once again I don't think there has been a Gas Spore done previously (SirOtus might have done one for a module he made, but I don't believe it was ever released outside of that). But nothing screams "Horror" these days other than "Fungal zombies", so this puffball is along for the ride

Tomorrow we'll dig deep once again into the Mecheon Archives to expand your Dark Sun monster list with another weird critter

The HORROR of Mechaween stops for nothing, not even 35 degree days that bring trains to a GRINDING HALT.

Today's isn't fully complete as he needs some scaling as my other plan for him just didn't work. For some reason he is very resistant to getting a beetle head put on him, but doesn't mind the original head? Ah well. Still close enough to get it across, and means you can just use it as another spider a bit better. Want to try to figure out why he's so resistant to being scaled down though....

Its time for the traditional rival of the Kalin, last seen in the Dark Sun custom content challenge! The Wallwalker, the imaginatively named spider thing from the depths of Dark Sun!

8ivxF1Q.png

Tomorrow we enact Mecheon's Third Law, which is, of course, "I was technically a member of the CCP, this means I can grab their content and modify it however I like"

MECHAWEEN NEVER ENDS

So yeah, my plan to swipe the Giant Beaver from CCP didn't work out so well because I wanted a higher quality texture. So I instead just got very lazy and decided to slap on an existing ingame texture with no changes

Doesn't change the fact it works quite well with it! Say hello to the Afanc, a creature of Welsh mythology! Unfortunately also being hunted by a monster-hunting warlock out for its bits and bobs. I may reskin one of these with more scales if requested, but I do sort of like how they are with the existing texture

u9Wle09.png

You know there is an Afanc in D&D? But rather than some sort of crocodile/beaver hybrid, they make a giant fish that makes whirlpools. Slightly yawn-y, that.

My plans for a THEMED WEEK of HORROR has also come up, and my ideas so far are Weirdo Fey Creatures or Equally Weird Aliens. Let me know if there's a preference one way or the other

Also, if anyone knows a good animation set for a 4 armed biped, please let me know because I got something crazy and almost PHoDish coming down the pipeline...

There's still time to get your votes in! Just remember they're specifically Fey animals, as in those weird critters that exist in the lands of Fey. Hopefully I can get the Big Plan I have for this going, because it'll be beautiful if it works

Now, as you've probably noticed a lot of these are just weird things I started months ago and haven't finished. And it turns out? I had a lot of things involving vaguely canine critters I started a while ago and never finished. So, here's one of those coming right along to grab you and drag you under the water with its handtail

XpPjThd.png

Please do not do as Aeon does and attempt to pet the Ahuizotl. He believes himself immune to HORROR as he is a mage, but he will learn his lesson

Tomorrow we have more vaguely caniform creatures. Remember to cast your vote in the "Which of these two things should Mecheon devote a week too first" 'poll', which is of course just me tallying posts

hello and welcome to Mecheon glues Krenshar tails onto dogs week.

oq8k5MX.png

The Leucrotta is another one of those creatures I wasn't happy with the existing NWN versions. Sir Otus did do a version, the Krenshar head on a deer body, but I didn't really feel it suited what I wanted for the Leucrotta. I chose a bit closer to the more 'mythological' version, crafting some sort of hyena/wolf thing

I made need to improve its skin to get across the lack of teeth and existence of just sheer bone there

Naturally this guy is supposed to hang around with your Mecheon Hyenas, if you've still got that lurking around

Just curious. Given that you say a lot of these are unfinished, how do you plan on releasing them (they are going to be released aren't they)? As a hak or a collection of models for others (better than I) to tinker with?

A colossal mess of a hakpack on the 31st

It'll be free for anyone to tinker with regardless. I just wanted to get some stuff off the harddrive and to other people to use

No days of Mechaween will be missed. Even if I just had a massive good ol' playthrough of good ol' Splatoon and am thoroughly squidded out

I do have a few reskins that I'll include because, well, I'm not sure if you've noticed but I enjoy having colourful creatures in my world. Helps offset the drab ones

Hopefully, if I can get its head right, tomorrow's creature will be something a bit creepy...
