Weirdness in Gmax
« on: August 27, 2015, 08:03:49 pm »

Has anyone else had trouble with the viewports in Gmax?  Specifically, when I am working with one viewport occasionally, and increasingly commonly, I'll get random overlaying of data from a different viewport.  For example, if I'm working the left viewport bits of texture will suddenly appear in that viewport.  Or, two of the other viewports will combine and duplicate each other--say the top and front.  When I click on the viewport (sometimes I need to zoom it), it resets, though occasional it will take several actions to clear it.  This "overlaying" doesn't do anything to the model though.  This problem is a hit and miss sort of thing.  I can go a few days without seeing it, and suddenly it gets so bad I can't use it--reboots don't help.

I've tried installing earlier (AMD) drivers, but I've seen little if any positive effect on the issue.   Any ideas?

This is why I dumped GMax years ago. It was developed when Win 2000 was the newest version of Windows and, once you get beyond Win XP, you get varying mileage with it. Have you tried using compatibility settings with it?

Tried compatibility setting but to no effect.  I've been wrestling with 3ds Max 2015 for a good part of the day.  It's familiar enough that it shouldn't pose any trouble except (blushing here) I DLed NWMax version 0.8c00 here, unzipped it and dropped it in 3ds folder as per the instructions.  When I ran 3ds Max I can't seem to find how to make the NWMax tool bar to display.  NWNmax did add other functionality but the tool bar has remained petulantly illusive.   Any help?

To use NWMax with Gmax, you MUST start Gmax using the new icon called NWMax, it will provide a green icon in your active programs list on the right hand section of your task bar. By this I mean, GMax must NOT be running when you start NWMax, it will automatically call up and run Gmax when you start NWMax, setting up some settings and an additional program called a 'listener' which will be that extra green icon.  That util, reads the text files of gmax when you go to export, and properly exports the data as needed to be used by the game.

Anyway, assuming you have the above working correctly, the issues with video memory you are having is due to the fact that gmax was written to work with ANCIENT graphics drivers, as such, not much memory was available, and it simply will not recognize or use most of the ram of a newer video card or even the ram used by a built in Intel graphics chip.  In other words, save often.  Exit and re-load nwmax/gmax every hour or so to help alleviate that particular problem... otherwise, you just have to deal with it.   Note that the problem persisted in 3dsmax up until version 9 or so, but by then, OTHER problems were showing up etc... basically trading one set of problems for another set with each upgrade.  Version 9 was about the best 3ds version for NWN usage, but you can successfully get versions up to version 12 at least , working... after that, I have no idea how well any of the later versions of 3ds work with nwmax, etc...

Good luck.

Bannor, sorry, I should have said I've been using NWmax for years with Gmax.  The issue I reported is a new one.   Umm...at this link: http://neverwinterva...ated-3dsmax2015 wasn't this updated for 3dsmax 2015 by you?

v9 of 3dsmax was the best for NWN?  Pity that it's not available anymore.  '<img'>  Add to that, I really hate the gray and gray color scheme of the newest 3dsmax.

Have you tried changing the gMax Driver Setup found under Customize -> Preferences -> Viewports tab.  Bottom right group is Display Drivers

Default is HEIDI with Software Z Buffer.  OpenGL or Direct3D may work better with newer machines. (or maybe not '<img'> )

Switched to HEIDI and it works!  (It was on Direct3D)  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Cool, MDA to the rescue again!  Glad you found a fix for it.  I my case, I always had to use opengl to get things working correctly and having the fewest issues.  But, just matching the driver is the key there.  Anyway, you will likely STILL have that issue with the viewport memory being overwritten when you zoom in/out etc... I think that particular bug is part of gmax directly, not necessarily the sub-driver you are using for the vid side of things.  Again, Gmax was written a LONG time ago, long before folks considered having computers with more than 1 gig of ram, and of that 1 gig 384k was reserved for 'system devices' like video etc...

Hope you continue to have fun with it all though!

When I tried OpenGL, it wouldn't even load at all--totally locked it up.  So far the issue hasn't repeated.  With Direct3D it was happening every 30 seconds in the end.  *crosses fingers*
