MP3 to BMU converter newer version?
« on: August 13, 2015, 09:24:54 am »

Does anyone have a newer version(v 3.5) of mp3 to bmu converter instead of v .35? I tried the old version out but there were errors.

The only difference between an mp3 file and a bmu file of the same piece of mono music is the first 8 bytes of the bmu file. All that mp3tobmu does is to insert those bytes. Using Notepad++ on a couple of BMUs it soon becomes apparent that the added 8 bytes are always the same -

BMU<cr>

V1.0

where cr is a carriage return and V1.0 is inserted at the start of the very next line.

You can easily prove this by opening the VLC media player and then drag and drop any of the bmu files, from your NWN/Music directory, onto it. You should find that it plays without any bother.

Normally the only errors you get when using mp3tobmu are because you are trying to convert a stereo mp3 instead of the mono file that is expected.

It will also throw errors if the mp3 isn't 128k constant bitrate, but it'll sometimes still throw the error even with they are the correct bitrate and work fine in game.

If you need to edit the mp3, Audacity is a useful free tool. Very easy to change bitrate or mono, for example.

I can only recommend an old version of soundforge. I always use it myself. But audicity is a pretty good programm too.

Audacity is an awesomely useful tool for NWN and I use it not only for music but also sound effects, voice sets, ambiences, etc as well. (It's good for lots of non-NWN stuff too).

I presume I'm using a fairly old version of MP3toBMU, ie:- I've had it for YEARS. (I'd have to check the version number). I have NO idea how many bits of music I've used it on but since there's over a thousand entries in my ambientmusic2da, all the additions mine, it's evidently a lot. I've never had a single problem with it. Occasionally it tells me the bitrate of a piece of music isn't constant but you ignore that and it still works perfectly well in game. Never encountered anything you could call an actual bug or error that interferes with the program's operation.

Maybe, if there actually are bugs in it, they appeared in a later version than mine? I'll have to go and check its version number, just out of interest.

EDIT:- Mine's ye olde v0.35. Never had a problem.

Pardon me, but where can I find an app to convert BMU audio files to MP3?

Try Audacity. For MP3 export you will also the Lame plug-in installed (follow instructions on the page pointed to by the link). The plug-in is needed due to software patents issues. Once you have audacity all set-up, do the following to convert bmu to mp3.

  1. Open Audacity

  2.
  3. drag and drop the bmu file(s) you want to convert, onto audacity

  4.
  5. Save as mp3

Just change the extension to .mp3. Why you would ever want to take a relatively poor quality 128k - 160k lossy audio file and put it through further compression by converting it to what it already is (an mp3) is beyond me. Lossy to lossy will only kill the sound quality even more, no matter how high you set the kbs.
