Quick Question On Haks
« on: January 22, 2015, 05:29:53 pm »

Okay...so I'm trying to build this ultimate pw with all of these beautiful tilesets. The thing is I have multiple haks from multiple creators. Besides my base haks I have 14 others. I think it would be a hassle for players to have to d/l 14 different links. How should I go about making 1 or a few d/l's? Also should I ask the creators if I can combine their work into a server file or make the players d/l stand alone work?

What most PW owners do is combining lots of haks into one naming it something like MyPW_A and myPW_B and so on. That way players get those haks in fewer downloads, but I really hate this method because I've only tried three PWs so far and got over five GB of content that is mostly all the same just put into different haks. I don't mind having to download the same stuff again, that happens only once for the PW, but I'm stuck with gigabytes of content that I'd really only need ONCE. If the hak isn't changed there's no need to put it into a different hak and if just a few 2da files are changed, they can go into a top hak and the other hak can stay unchanged.

Why not putting all the needed haks into a zip (or 7z) file instead of a hak? That way if the player unpacks the files into the hak folder and has a newer version of tileset xyz he can choose not to have the older version override it. Only files he doesn't already have will be copied to the hak folder. I think I have all of Worm's tilesets at least thrice. Is that really neccessary?

The other thing about people repackaging because of a (possibly false) perception that people don't want to download haks, is that the creator will not know how many people are actually downloading and  using their stuff. This could lead to them not staying around because they believe no one wants their work.

Thank you ever so kindly! I fully see both points of view. While I really like the first option I empathize with the second opinion. As such I would not want to contribute to anyone leaving or having the feeling that their work wasn't used or appreciated. As such I'll just make some forums (which I was going to do anyway) and link each hak(s) to their owner. Hopefully it's not a detriment or too much of a pain in the arse for people who'd like to try it out. At this point I don't think it will because the community which remains may be drawn to new projects. *shrugs* Hopefully! It's going to be hard to find players as it is so I'd like the module to be very pleasing to the eye but also offer quality roleplay and adventuring opportunities. The idea I've come up with is pretty good (in my opinion...fwiw lol) so I hope the concept alone will intrigue people enough to entice them into wanting to play.
