Custom Content Challenge: December 2014: Winter Holidays
« on: December 01, 2014, 08:04:36 pm »

The theme for this month's challenge: "Winter Holidays":

Winter Holidays: How about a Christmas tree that attacks the PC if he tries to cut it down? Perhaps a one-horse open sleigh, a flying sleigh pulled by eight tiny reindeer, a giant, bulging sack with presents sticking out the top. A 'santa' outfit. Santa caps. A placeable manger. A placeable star with streaming light. Placeable icicles. How about a candy cane weapon? Symbols of other winter holidays, like a menorah or yule log.

This theme was suggested by Pstemarie & Frith5.

Guidelines:

  • It must be fully working in game.

  • Use of vanilla NWN or publicly available texture is fine.  Just remember that NWN textures must have dimensions in powers of 2 (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc.).

  • Teamwork is welcome.

  • Beginners most welcome. Don't be afraid, just try, you'll be surprised!

  • "Custom Content" includes many sorts of things: models, scripts, prefabs (areas, items, creatures, conversations, quests, etc.), sounds, portraits, or anything else new for the game.

  • All submissions must be finished, working, and emailed to NWNCCCMakers@gmail.com (or a non-Vault link provided) by January 1st, 2015. Sooner than that is perfectly fine too. ;-)

  •

Somethings you could include in the download/email that would make packaging everything up easier and faster:

  • 2da lines needed.

  • Screenshot from in game for use on the vault page (this also gives me hints on how to display the new goodie). Formats: .bmp, .jpg, .png, or .tga

  • Portraits (if needed) of your new goodie. Placeables and monsters should include a portrait.

  • Inventory icons (if needed) of your new goodie.

  • Any credits you would like listed.

  • If this is your first entry, please tell me what name you would like your work listed under and provide a link to your other NWN content if you want that displayed as well (the link bit is totally optional).

  • Also if you would like an invite to the CC Makers group, send Rolo Kipp a friend invite. The group is nothing spectacular, mostly just documentation on 2da lines.

  •

Remember, the Challenge is all about fun, sharing, creativity, and surprise!

This thread is for all sorts of discussion about this month's theme: ideas for things to make, questions/concerns, announcement of what you intend to make, screenshots of work in progress and/or finished projects.

If you want to discuss the Monthly Custom Content Challenge idea as a whole or wish to submit ideas/themes for future monthly Challenges, please post in its thread here

When submitting a new theme, please provide a title and short summary of the theme.

If you have a technical question about some custom content creation, please create a separate thread so that the answers can be found later by anyone, not just people interested in this Challenge.

    We'll try to help!

Have no fear and join the fun!

    And finally, you can:

    Submit theme suggestions.

    Vote for January's theme.

    Email content to: NWNCCCMakers@gmail.com

And yes, this is open to any winter holiday stuff, not just christmas related things. It could even (and should) include things for holidays that take place in winter in various gameworlds. '<img'>

I plan on making a gingerbread man cookie creature model (hopefully a rather simple skinmesh over regular human animations)...one tiny and perhaps one halfling sized.

Here's a few other model ideas I came up with in a couple minutes for those not particularly inspired by this month's theme description:

    - peppermint weapons (quarterstaff, club, sickle) - could use existing weapon models with brand new red and white texture(s)

    - evil snowman with top hat (thanks, Tarot Redhand) - could take my existing evil snowman, remove the spikes on his back, then add a top hat and scarf.

    - pine treants - no reason all treants have to be deciduous

reindeer (with self-illuminated, dynamic light emitting) glowing red nose - if I recall correctly, Project Q has a nice reindeer to use as a base model

    - giant snowflake/ice shuriken - so you can just let it go (into your enemies' flesh!) (yeah, yeah, I blame having 4 year old twins)

mistletoe-decorated quarterstaff and sickle - fit for a druid

holly-decorated shield - because, um, it would look nice, I guess

As Catholicism was wont to do, many present-day Christmas customs were incorporated from Pagan mid-winter celebrations, including Saturnalia (gift-giving and carols) and Yule (foods and the yule log).

    Winter Solstice

The Winter Solstice on Oerth occurs on the 4th of Needfest.

The night of the Winter Solstice is called Midwinter Night, also known as Dark Time, Dim Time, and Handmaiden's Glory. It is this night when Luna is completely dark and only Celene is visible in the sky. It is the longest night of the year.

    Holidays and observances

Breadgiving Day (Free City of Greyhawk, churches of Pelor, Rao, and Saint Cuthbert)

Fist of Eternal Malachite (Hextor): Hextorians mark this day to celebrate either the victory of the House of Naelax during the Turmoil Between Crowns, or the victories of a local ruler.

The Grand Administrative Council (Greyhawk): On this day, Greyhawk's Directing Oligarchy meets with the city's petty nobles.

Yeartide (elves): The elves believe on this day the earth is purified beneath her blanket of snow. They observe the date with quiet meditation of the past year and on things to come.

Clerics of Celestian conduct all-night services of moonwatching and stargazing on Midwinter Night.

Clerics of Garyx celebrate All-Consuming Night on the winter solstice.

Midwinter Night is also considered holy by followers of Kurell.

Troglodyte shamans perform the rites to placate their ever-ravenous god, Laogzed, on this day.

Treasures are offered to the orcish goddess Luthic on the winter solstice.

The winter solstice is also a holy day for the frost giant god Thrym.

    (From FR Wiki)

Midwinter (also known as Deadwinter Day) was a festival to mark the midpoint of winter in the Calendar of Harptos. It occured on a special day between Hammer 30 and Alturiak 1. Amongst nobles and monarchs it was known as Midwinter and was traditionally used to make or renew alliances, although the common people called it Deadwinter Day, a reference to the cold and hard times that remained before the spring.

On Midwinter Day the Red Fellowship of the Deity known as the Red Knight observes the Retreat. This solemn ceremony consists of an assembly wherein the clergy discuss the previous year's campaigns. Strategies are discussed, battles analyzed, and the accumulated lore integrated into the church's teachings.

The holiest day of the year for the Church of Shevarash is Midwinter Night, during which the Dark Court Slaughter is remembered. Inductions into the ranks of the clergy occur at this time. Each new cleric screams vows of vengeance into the night air and swears neither to laugh nor smile until the Spider Queen and her followers are no more

I don't have any other pics that I can post here but I do have some links to pictures and info. Pictures first - An Ice Queen, A guy in a weird costume (I've no idea what he represents) - both from a dutch mid winter festival. Next there is The Wheel of the Year for pagans. A short article from the BBC website dated 20 December, 1999 which explains the pagan influence on christian festivities. Finally there is an old christmas tradition no longer observed, The Lord of Misrule. While the Victorians resurrected many of the traditions that the puritans of Oliver Cromwell's time tried to stamp out, this latter wasn't one of them.

If anyone wants to improve on my sleigh prototype, feel free. I've taken it about as far as my limited skills permit.

...That was hilarious. I mean, it was interesting how you did that, but mostly it was hilarious to see an old lady on a rocking chair being pulled around comically by animals. Especially because in the back of my mind, it wasn't an intentional sled, just an old grandma getting grabbed by some rope and pulled along for a merry ride through town as she clutches an iron death grip onto her rocking chair.

A simple Christmas hat as head VFX would be lovely.
