Custom Content Challenge: November 2014: Urban Adventures
« on: November 01, 2014, 06:16:53 pm »

The theme for this month's challenge: "Urban Adventures":

Urban Adventures: City areas, inhabitants, features, locations, districts, City Centers, Slums, Shops, and Monuments, city-dwellers, urban monsters, and challenges.

This theme was suggested by Carcerian.

Guidelines:
  • It must be fully working in game.
  • Use of vanilla NWN or publicly available texture is fine.  Just remember that NWN textures must have dimensions in powers of 2 (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc.).
  • Teamwork is welcome.
  • Beginners most welcome. Don't be afraid, just try, you'll be surprised!
  • "Custom Content" includes many sorts of things: models, scripts, prefabs (areas, items, creatures, conversations, quests, etc.), sounds, portraits, or anything else new for the game.
  • All submissions must be finished, working, and emailed to NWNCCCMakers@gmail.com (or a non-Vault link provided) by November 1st, 2014. Sooner than that is perfectly fine too. ;-)

Somethings you could include in the download/email that would make packaging everything up easier and faster:
  • 2da lines needed.
  • Screenshot from in game for use on the vault page (this also gives me hints on how to display the new goodie). Formats: .bmp, .jpg, .png, or .tga
  • Portraits (if needed) of your new goodie. Placeables and monsters should include a portrait.
  • Inventory icons (if needed) of your new goodie.
  • Any credits you would like listed.
  • If this is your first entry, please tell me what name you would like your work listed under and provide a link to your other NWN content if you want that displayed as well (the link bit is totally optional).
  • Also if you would like an invite to the CC Makers group, send Rolo Kipp a friend invite. The group is nothing spectacular, mostly just documentation on 2da lines.

Remember, the Challenge is all about fun, sharing, creativity, and surprise!

This thread is for all sorts of discussion about this month's theme: ideas for things to make, questions/concerns, announcement of what you intend to make, screenshots of work in progress and/or finished projects.

If you want to discuss the Monthly Custom Content Challenge idea as a whole or wish to submit ideas/themes for future monthly Challenges, please post in its thread here

When submitting a new theme, please provide a title and short summary of the theme.

If you have a technical question about some custom content creation, please create a separate thread so that the answers can be found later by anyone, not just people interested in this Challenge.

We'll try to help!

Have no fear and join the fun!

And finally, you can:

Submit theme suggestions.
Vote for December's theme.

Not sure if I will be doing this, or participating in NaNoWriMo...or neither, or both......but, does anybody have anything against a new animation overlay for male and female humanoids (a_fa/a_ba) for (large) gun use? I'm thinking to style the animation similar to Graves from LoL.

Alternately, I may make one of my other custom animations a bit more jerky, and do some size large mech suits. Not steampunk, but less tech filled than Iron Man.

Edit: I've not been completely satisfied with any of the other -- or even my own -- firearms, of any kind, and really want some good animations I can use for both futuristic, and renaissance style weaponry.

What should be considered an urban monster?

The only D&D creature that could fit in that category, in my opinion, could be the wererat.

Could be, the gremlins, considered an urban monster?

How about a set of animated objects, a crippled beggar/spy, gnomish wood golem, mimic, or a shield guardian? You could have some enslaved humanoid monsters hauling goods with heavy manacles on their legs.

Maybe various modified rats, or some more otyughs. Scrag trolls for port docks and bridges. Maybe some monstrous beasts of burden. Maybe a living brick golem or other such construct, either for protection, or for a spell-activated encounter.

I can think of a few: The splinterwaif,, from 3.5e Monster Manual III:

 24634_1053835200.jpg

The splinterwaif is an evil variant of the dryad that inhabits the wood used in buildings and preys on city inhabitants (particularly children)

The 3.5e book Cityscape also has a handful of creatures, such as the Siege Golem:

Siege_Golem_by_DaveAllsop.jpg

Siege golems are most frequently used as one element of a larger military force. They might be deployed in groups, and are often accompanied by other creatures that defend them from attack, allowing them to focus on a wall with the catapult attached to its back.

the Cesspit Ooze:

cesspit_ooze_zps91c2489f.jpg

The cesspit ooze is a product of the urban environment, a horrific predator born of the distinctive mixture of pain and despair found in the poorest quarters of the city combined with the ambient arcane energies that emanate from the most magic-intensive regions. Their foul, brown-green sludgy bodies often contain garbage, rusted tools, old rags, bits of bone and rotted animals, and raw sewage.

the Ripper:

ripper_zps26613e1f.jpg

The ripper is a vaguely humanoid aberration that lurks in the darkest, poorest urban areas. There it preys on its favorite meal: the flesh of sentient creatures.

the Sepulchral Thief:

sepulchral_thief_zps854d2902.jpg

A sepulchral thief is an undead criminal, a thief, burglar, or bandit. Unlike other undead whom it resembles, such as the lich, the sepulchral thief does not deliberately seek out an undead existence. Rather, like some ghosts or ghouls, it rises spontaneously on rare occasions when the proper circumstances align.

Sepulchral thieves are shrouded in a mind- and senses-clouding aura of negative energy.

And the Zeitgeist:

zeitgeist_zpsa4b53e44.jpg

The zeitgeist is a strange, phantasmal fey that appears to be generated by the lives and emotions of those living in an urban center. It is capable of assuming multiple forms; each is drawn from the building blocks of the city and culture.

A zeitgeist's three forms are:

1. Mob manifestation: it takes on the form of a huge mob of humans.

2. Smoke manifestation: it takes on the form of an enormous cloud of semi-solid rolling smoke

3. Stone manifestation: it takes on the form of a huge humanoid figure, composed of stones, detritus, and even whole buildings.

How about a tentacled creature that lives in the sewers that grabs prey as it passes too close to the grate? Hmmm, trolls and bridges... How about a troll killing goat  '' ?  How about were cats to catch the were rats? Were dogs to chase the were cats? (with apologies to Burl Ives and Frank Luther)

But enough about creatures.@MD Love the idea of mechs.

<at first glance of Oliver Graves>

@MD

An alternate phenotype?

different again from the d20 modern?

I like the possibilities here,

'<img'>

imho,

The hand position could be very important...

Maybe with a gun trigger more like a lever (?)...

then perhaps the community could develop useable projectile staff weapons....(?... !)

''

Perhaps.....

A proper wererat would be great!

You already pointed out that there is a better wererat model in project Q and I knew that.

That wererat looks nice. The problem with it is that it looks NICE, not a fierce wererat that wants to feast on your intestines.

I'd consider gremlins an urban monster. Also a domovoi and any kind of household elf.

A thought occurred to me that the Filth theme is probably pretty appropriate for Urban Adventures. What else is a medieval city if not filthy and malodorous? Having a few trash piles, a midden mound, or some heaps of junk can make a slums area look more lived in... if not quite liveable,

Assumedly many Urban Encounters would be more mundane, Guards, City Officials (Magistrates, Tax Collectors, the Mayor), Street Folk, Merchants, Peddlers, Lamplighters, Town-Criers, Harlots, Beggars, Thugs, Gangs, Lovable Street Orphans, Pickpockets, and many NPC archetypes.

Deep Dargons live in Drow Cities, posing as drow, asumedly other species of dragons do the same in surface communities.

1407890418481.jpg

Dopplegangers and Rakshasa both infiltrate all levels of urban society, especially positions of power, influence or wealth.

beastlands-tirumala.jpg

Many Tyrant / Infiltator types tend to take over city areas, using cityfolk as thralls . (Beholders, Mind Flayers, Aboleth, Yuan-Ti...)

beholder.jpg

The sewers are often populated by a host of unholesome life, Gelatinous cubes and other slimes, and vermin are naturally attracted to human refuse and waste.

Otyughs

(The Star Wars Trash Monster on Steroids)

Cranium Rats

Were-Rats/Ratkin/Skaven (and other lycanthropes)

Wererat_attack-1-.jpg

Moon Rats

moonrat.jpg

Mimics would have a host of items to pose as in urban enviornments...

190cqflxiny1fjpg.jpg

Many creatures also mimic the human form, to better prey upon it...

Or even use humans as hosts (Shadowrun's Insect spirits = high octane nightmare fuel)

I'd consider them fitting, they definitely seem to prefer at least civilized areas and would likely thrive in an urban setting.

A lot of monsters fit an urban environment, even gargoyles, carrion crawlers (in the sewers) or some undead (vampires).
