A Question of Alternatives (Tilesets that is But Not J.A.R.S.)

You forgot Wales. Edward 1st (aka longshanks aka the hammer of the scots - think that travesty of a movie braveheart) built loads of them. Many of which still stand. Scotland's medieval castles were built mostly near lochs iirc. Not sure about Northern Ireland.

BTW have you got a link for the medieval ruin castle tileset on the new vault cos I can't find it.

Well, Wales is a part of England conquered at around, i think, 1200 A.D. i might be off on the exact date. Which is always debatable as some believe England's first king was 'William the conqueror'. Which was why i didnt mention Wales in particular, as they are often mistaken with "English" castle stereotypes.

I dont know much about Ireland's History, but i do know a small few of their oldest castles were built by Viking's.

And i dont believe it was uploaded to the new vault. I believe toro Tiberius Morguhn was working on a castle ruin, and I also happen to have a CCS (castle construction set) hak i can upload but it might not include moats.

The other i have is a CCS/Rural/City Tileset that will get you the moats you want and alot more ''

I should hastily add - Wales isn't part of England, but it is part of the United Kingdom.

If y'all are referring to the Moathouse Ruins - they are part of the addons that Q did for the TNO Tileset. Tiberius Morghun also has a version on the new Vault. Both versions are incomplete - or as TM puts it, "rough". This means that both versions lack the full level of detail we desired to incorporate into our separate visions, BUT the moathouse is useable.

Just to clear a few things up. The country of Wales was conquered in 1282 by Edward 1st. The UK is currently made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland but this might change soon, after the Scottish Independence Referendum vote on Thursday 18th September 2014. Here's a few links.

Welsh History, British History and Irish History. Pictures of medieval castles by country -> England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. I live in an area with 2 castles - Lincoln Castle and Newark castle (which is a ruin because Oliver Cromwell had it blown up at the end of the English Civil War).

Also, in case anyone is bothered, the first King of England was Æthelstan... as Alan Bennett put it so well, "History - it's just one effing thing after another"...

when talking about history is always so fickle. if referring to a specific period in history you couldnt *always* bring up certain modern aspects such as the UK, as the very idea of the UK wasnt created in 1282 A.D. back then, Wales was probably ,and most deliberately, a country that was considered "conquered". As to what we see it today, as a country never conquered by anyone.

just as the same with Edward Ist is sometimes not even considered a first English king, or the aforementioned Æthelstan. According to what might be considered England and pre England (or before England's name) anyone could debate him being the first English king, as he ruled a Anglo Saxon land before it was synonymous with the phrase "England". The wiki link never once said he was linked to the usage or wording of 'England' or 'Angle Land'. just that he was the king of the Anglo Saxon people.

That doesn't mean it isnt interesting though '<img'>  I honestly did not know he was a living person until know. i love medieval history in all its forms!

A few random thoughts I have had:

  • A "Giant" castle tileset: everything is double scale, from the heavy doors, the massive columns, large steps, and the broad masonry blocks. Even the wall sconses are large and located well up the wall. Furniture is broad and massive. Everything is built to make the PC look downright puny.

  • Cellar tileset: thicker, plain stone walls with heavy support columns and a dirty, cracked floor that hosts various mysterious stains. Some floor drains, cobwebs, wall-height shelves filled with old stuff; large casks of fermenting ale; broken pots; discarded junk; holes and cracks in the walls for rats to get in, &c. Basically, dark, dingy, and dank.

  • Clouds tileset: everything is fuzzy and indistinct. Lots of cloud emitters and nebulous objects. Solid surfaces are formed from misty barriers.

I really like the CC Exterior tileset that six worked on. It's not complete... the tiles do not repeat off the edge of the set creating that 'Void' look... but the set as a whole is very nice. Its got that TNO feel, and plenty of new tiles to make a city exterior much more complete. So as long as you keep it from going up to an edge directly it is great.

Cervantes and I are looking at incorporating some of Six's new tiles from that set into the Q City Exterior we're working on.

That would be extremely nice. I would especially love to see the texture change that the CC Exterior did be in Q City. It would actually make the city tileset something I might want to use. '<img'>
