Help? Spelljammer placeable. How does this play for you?
« on: April 29, 2014, 10:47:48 pm »

Here she is.  This would easily be the most complex model ever stuffed into NWN.  It's a non-optimized import of Silverblade's render-quality Spelljammer Tradesman in .OBJ format here.  While it was originally untextured, I have textured it (see instructions under the picture) in order to make sure that tverts on something this complex could be compiled.

You can download the test module here.  Unpack the module to your modules directory and the model file and TGA to your override directory.  You can delete or rename the TGA in order to reveal the texture that I mapped onto the model.  I included this red texture so you can get an idea how insanely detailed this model really is.

This is my "high water mark" test model and while I built up to it with progressively-larger models, it's not just meant to be pretty.  It represents something fundamental about what's possible within this game.

I've tested it on a couple of different video cards (very high and very low end) and it's always been smooth, but I'm going to toss it out and ask you to simply report back with how well it plays for you, in-game.  This model should always be set to static and if it's not, it'll hang the game as soon as you mouseover it.  Kick it around however you like but include what you did in the feedback.

If you can also include what kind of CPU and video card you have, that would be really appreciated.

<video removed>

Loads fine. Causes a bit of choppiness when I walk under it.

This is on a win7-64 bit machine with 2GB RAM, with intel celeron 2.2GHz and intel mobile 4 express video

MerricksDad, can you post a direct link to the video?  For some reason when I press play I get "undefined" and static from YouTube.  A friend of mine has one of those Intel Mobile cards, have you mucked with any of the settings in the control panel for it or is it at default?  I'm specifically wondering what the "driver memory footprint" is set at and/or anything else that you think might be relevant.  We're talking about a card with around 64 megs of dedicated video memory, correct?  If not, do you recall how much dedicated video memory it does have?

Also, do you have VSync turned on in NWN?  If you happen to have the time and it's not turned on, does turning it on and walking under/around it still produce chop?  Regardless, do you consider it "too" choppy?  Much thanks!

sorry, that video is just "****** in my pants" by Lonely Island. Nothing nwn related. '<img'>

Yeah it is pretty small card. I don't know the exact stats, but the only thing I ever did with it is upgrade its drivers once I got it. I'll see if I can find deeper stats on it and re-post.

I didn't personally think it was too choppy. I didn't texturize it at all before use, so I don't have any idea how that would affect it. Especially if you ever intended for it to be walked on (on the deck) then I wouldn't expect it to be that big of a deal especially if it was trimmed underneath for use in a module like that. I don't know how much you could fit into the same scene, but on my machine, it might not be that much more.

brb

ok so my diagnostics are saying it is able to access 780MB, which surprised me.

so uh...laugh if you want, but here are my fps stats while moving around it

standing still without any part of it on screen 29-31 fps

standing still with it on screen 15-17 fps

moving around without any part of it on screen 19-21 fps

moving around under it with it on screen 11-13 fps

forgot to mention:

no change at all with vsync on or off, zip zero zilch

also all other NWN settings set to highest

Thanks!  This is integrated video and the 780 megs it shows is how much of your RAM is free for it to access.   It may not have any of its own.

Runs as smooth as silk on my XP system - Dual boot with Win 7 - core 2 quad Q9450 (2.66 gig fsb) with AMD HD3870 x 2. Everything turned on to max inc anti aliasing excluding shiny water.

Funny thing with NwN and win 7, I have no problems with the graphics but NwN refuses to recognise my motherboards (p5e3 Deluxe) integrated sound card and tries to use a software solution which screws everthing up. Which is main reason for me using XP under which NwN has no problem.

Running smooth here. WinXP (32b), AMD A64 2.8 Ghz (single core), Nvidia GT6600, 2 Gigs RAM. 1024 x 768 max graphic options. Using "cs_roma" camera unlock mod and FRAPS.

- lowest frame rate (PC standing still under the keel): 45 FPS

- average f.r. (PC moving around ship): 55 - 65 FPS

- Max distance, deck bird view: 60 FPS

- No ship or ship fins on screen: 90 - 110 FPS

Great model !
