May I Take Your Order?
« on: February 07, 2014, 08:57:21 am »

Running dry on ideas for my 100+ creatures so I thought I'd ask for suggestions.
I already have all official DND monsters that I could find so I'm looking for monsters/races from myth, legend, folklore, movies, tv shows, games, comics and etcetera. If you do think of a really obscure DND monster that probably isn't listed elsewhere I'll look at that also.

I do have a truckload of humanoids already though so...

I wanted to say something conclusive here but failed.

Nuckalevee is my default answer to anyone asking about making monsters, for obvious reasons

On the odd side I've been trying to figure out the best way to get a working Buer, as in the demon, for a while. Those demonology books are good sources for that sort of thing

Nilshai!  '<img'>  This is one that I hope to work on myself, if my skills ever become good enough, but I wouldn't say no to someone else's version, if you're looking for monsters to make.

I have an idea.. children or models of teenagers. There are two children in the game (if you don't cound the hive-kid from Codi). Also, elf children. dwarfs, etc.

To clarify: are you creating new creatures? Modelling them?

Or are you creating blueprints, abilities, and so on?

Doing both?

You might check out the Book of Beasts. They are nearly all original D&D creations and possibly a few may be appealing to you...

Children and old people - yes please!

Incidentally, CEP has a 'workaround' for creating female children from dynamic halflings:  a certain chest clothes model. I also used dynamic elf model (+ hooded head) to generate a 'teen bandit' or a 'hoodie' as we call them over here.

Aside from full child models of different ages and old people, we really need more child/old people heads.

I'm not going to get into shorter/taller/thinner/fuller dynamic phenotypes for all races... because the very thought of of making all clothing compatible with them generates a headache. O_o

For older people, I find the old/frail phenotype handy.

Some of the CEP creatures could do with a facelift - maybe use the new CEP wiki to agree who does what?

There are a LOT of creatures from all sorts of D&Dsources with no matching appearances (though, in fairness, I'm still only using CEP 2.3, but drooling over TAD's current project). Our source list (mostly 3.0 and 3.5) for monsters includes:

Deities and Demigods
Draconomicon
Elder Evils
Exemplars of Evil
Fiend Folio
Fiendish Codex 1
Fiendish Codex 2
Libris Mortis
Lords of Madness
Monster Manual 1
Monster Manual 2
Monster Manual 3
Monster Manual 4
Monster Manual 5
Monstrous Compendium - Mystara
Monstrous Compendium - Spelljammer
Tome of Horrors 1
Tome of Horrors 2
Tome of Horrors 3

We also look a lot at settings for creature ideas:

Book of Exalted Deeds
Book of Vile Darkness
Forgotten-Realms-Campaign-Setting-OCR
Manual of the Planes
Miniatures Handbook
Planar Handbook
Setting - Cityscape
Setting - Dungeonscape
Setting - Frostburn
Setting - Ghostwalk
Setting - Sandstorm
Setting - Stormwrack
The Plane Above
The Plane Below
Unapproachable East

There are, for example a lot of minor demons and devils that have, to my knowlege, never been done.
We wind up doing a lot of half-assing when it comes to appearances in our areas. Specifically, take a look at our current area project, Limbo. The base appearances are well-covered, but there are a ton that are severely, uh, approximated:

Limbo creature list

Likewise, the area we have slated to add after that, the first of our Elder Evils areas, features a lot more 'approximated' appearances:

Father Llymic creature list

As you can see, we also use a lot of sources not listed above, including the excellent creature catalog linked in those spreadsheets. Hopefully you'll be able to draw inspiration fro some of the above. Feel free to PM me if you have a question about any of the sources.

               Thank you everyone.

nuckelavee: creepiest thing I've seen so far, certainly a necessity.

buer demon: I couldn't wourk out how to do him either but looking at him again I might do him a a sort of flesh eating pinwheel monster.

Thank you for suggesting Pathfinder. I didn't yet know it had it's own website.

Nilshai: is a worm with arms? I think I was actually looking for worm monsters at a stage.

I'll look at the Book of Beasts also.

FunkySwerve, thank you for your huge suggestion but I've had a lot of trouble in the past finding online information from the monster manuals and accompanying books. I will explore your links though.

As for children. It was always my intention to also make a child version of at least most of the humanoid creatures. I like the idea of presenting the player with a diplomatic option and allowing them to visit an ork tribe or lizard folk den or eccetera on peaceful terms so I'm going to have little ork kids and recently hatched lizardfolk in my 100+ to run around the player's feet.

Thank you everyone.
