Simple modelling query
« on: February 03, 2014, 03:06:28 pm »

I'm trying to make a thumb stick.

Everything is exactly in the position I need, but the handles look dark:

'Image

This persists when textured and in-game, even though the parameters appear to be identical to the shaft.

I don't really know how to use GMax, though I have loaded and exported there, just to confirm that the model looks right.

Any thoughts?

The model is here

I tried to have a look at the model, but I got a 'not found' error. Check the ambient and diffuse settings of both parts. If they are identical, check the shininess. It's probably best to have ambient and diffuse at 1.0 1.0 1.0 and shininess at 1.0 unless you want your model to appear darker.

Thanks, but those settings look identical to me. The link to the model should work if you "save target as".

               link dead also for me

if you look at the image shown, the handle seems to have a shinier object underneath it. Is it possible the handle section is double modeled, rendering both with one having the correct settings and one having the incorrect settings might do this. Check the model hierarchy and look for a duplicate of the handle object.

Or check that your texture for the handle does not have an alpha channel, which in the explorer would make it appear see-through, while in game it might be see through or shiny depending on settings and availability of texture

Thanks for the suggestions, but that doesn't seem to be the problem, as far as I can see. Any further thoughts?

Sorry about the dead link - the model is now here.

I pulled your model into gmax, and the smaller branches/handle parts are inverted/inside out.  It looks like at some point they were mirrored and the export or a reset X forms was done and made them appear incorrectly.  This could be causing the darker coloration in-game because you're seeing what's essentially the inside of the cylinders, which are in shadow.

... and here it is, in game.

In full screen HD, it's not a bad bodge, I think.

Video Credits : Babau demon by Paganini. Autognomes by Shemsu-Heru.
Music : "Every Step" by Silent Partner (from YouTube free audio library).

Thanks once again.
