Custom Content Challenge: February 2014: Gothic
« on: February 01, 2014, 04:02:40 pm »

               This month's challenge is "Gothic":

Elegant and spooky, ravenloft/addams family/world of darkness, stylistic and art neveau, ornate black iron works, stained glass, stone gargoyles, ornate cemetaries/crypts. Themes of romance and tragedy, or "a ray of  light in the darkness." Can be humerous as long as its ironic/morbid humor.

This theme was suggested by Carcerian.

Guidelines:
  • It must be fully working in game.
  • Use of vanilla NWN or publicly available texture is fine.  Just remember that NWN textures must have dimensions in powers of 2 (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc.).
  • Teamwork is welcome.
  • Beginners most welcome. Don't be afraid, just try, you'll be surprised!
  • "Custom Content" includes many sorts of things: models, scripts, prefabs (areas, items, creatures, conversations, quests, etc.), sounds, portraits, or anything else new for the game.
  • All submissions must be finished, working, and emailed to NWNCCCMakers@gmail.com (or a non-Vault link provided) by March 1st, 2014. Sooner than that is perfectly fine too. ;-)

Somethings you could include in the download/email that would make packaging everything up easier and faster:
  • 2da lines needed.
  • Screenshot from in game for use on the vault page (this also gives me hints on how to display the new goodie). Formats: .bmp, .jpg, .png, or .tga
  • Portraits (if needed) of your new goodie. Placeables and monsters should include a portrait.
  • Inventory icons (if needed) of your new goodie.
  • Any credits you would like listed.
  • If this is your first entry, please tell me what name you would like your work listed under and provide a link to your other NWN content if you want that displayed as well (the link bit is totally optional).
  • Also if you would like an invite to the CC Makers group, send Rolo Kipp a friend invite. The group is nothing spectacular, mostly just documentation on 2da lines.
  • If you are doing tileset content, *please* let me know ahead of time so I can get you the set and itp files to work with. I’m horrible at merging those so this bit you will need to provide.

Remember, the Challenge is all about fun, sharing, creativity, and surprise!

This thread is for all sorts of discussion about this month's theme: ideas for things to make, questions/concerns, announcement of what you intend to make, screenshots of work in progress and/or finished projects.

If you want to discuss the Monthly Custom Content Challenge idea as a whole or wish to submit ideas/themes for future monthly Challenges, please post in its thread here.
When submitting a new theme, please provide a title and short summary of the theme.

If you have a technical question about some custom content creation, please create a separate thread so that the answers can be found later by anyone, not just people interested in this Challenge. We'll try to help!

Have no fear and join the fun!

And finally, you can:

Submit theme suggestions.
Vote for March's theme.

I have a request if anyone is up to it:

Bloated Dead: A zombie in the bloated state of decomposition than when struck. . . well you get the idea. A truly disgusting monster for mature audiences only.

The reason why I'm asking for this is because for a module I'm working on, I have zombies in various states of decay. The existing zombie, rotting zombie, mohrg, and skeleton are good but what's missing is an animated bloated corpse.

Now in all fairness, exploding zombies is perhaps too over-the-top for a truly gothic feel and this may not be appropriate for this month's challenge. But I do think that having a complete collection of animated corpses in all stages of decay provides the builder with a larger palette of horror than what we have today.

And if I can be of any assistance in the creation of this horrible and disgusting content, please let me know.

Thanks!

If the stars are right. . . that is to say my "stretch goal" this month is to finish a module:

Knights of the Walking Dead
An adaptation of the Ravenloft module RQ1 Night of the Walking Dead set in Clark Ashton Smith's Averoigne including a dark reflection of the Camargue region (Southern Provencal) of Medieval France [which was clearly the inspiration for Averoigne].

However, there is quite a bit of work left to be done which is why I cannot commit to finishing it.

My Realistic Commitment
What I will commit to do is the release of as much content from this work-in-progress as I can.

For example:
  • New monsters: Skeletal Dead, Rotting Dead, and Walking Dead (existing models & textures)
  • New equipment: 14th Century French arms & armor (existing models & textures); new magic items (existing models & textures)

oooh so much to do here. im going with the medieval gothic architecture feel here. would anyone disagree if i re-compiled (aka update to 1.69) and/ or made an area from the gothic city by Kelebalf?

nwvault.ign.com/View.php

regardless, i feel like i want to use it and make something, since its one of my most favorite, respected (and most proper gothic) material. It never seems to get much attention. Maybe a reskin perhaps?

As an idea does anyone want to add onto it? perhaps make proper existing gothic architecture, such as spiked roofs or mosque towers?

like this

I would suggest using his hak in a prefab area or areas, rather than submitting the work that's already been done to create that hak.

There will be a few more...

Side quest : everyone who correctly identifies at least one picture will receive an exclusive Saga Norén emoticon for use in zen telegrams (or Spock emoticon, for residents outside the Anglo-Nordic zone).

I think the one to the right of the bearded gent is Edgar Allan Poe (cos 1 of the pictures mentioned below is of him). Also the bearded gent I think is Nostrodamus but might just be John Dee.

On a side note does anyone know of some decent dark wood picture frame images. I've got 10 pictures that I have manipulated for submission to this but the only decent frames I've got are way too bright.

<edit>

I have no found some that I hope will be suitable.

Is the lady by chance Countess Elizabeth Bathory who is said to have bathed in the blood of over 650 virgins in an attempt to retain her youth? The pictures of the guy in armour and the ghostly one next to him are familiar but I would need to see larger versions to identify them.

Here is my first (of 10) texture. Getting the frames to the right size is proving more difficult than I anticipated with non-square subjects.

If anyone would like an idea.

Grand Ballroom

Although the RLCore Gothic interior is similar, this picture just shows a bit more elegance (and something that maybe the Toreador Vampires would prefer to waltz in!)

Something like this decrepit gothic house might be pretty cool.
