New (to me anyway) Links to info & stuff
« on: January 19, 2014, 04:07:42 pm »

               I thought long and hard as to where to post the following link (sent to me by stumbleUpon via weekly email) and decided that on balance this is probably the best place for it. This is a page an independant DnD web site, full of links to various tools and information. The actual page is called D&D Adventures - Dungeon Master Resources. There links to such things as tools for converting 2e monsters to 3e and 3.5e.

Hope this is of use to somebody.

<edit>

Please be aware that this is apparently quite an old site and therefor there are quite a few broken links when they point awa from this site.

               Here's 4 more links for you. I get john fours newsletter every week and this week there some interesting links. First there is And Magazine, which is a free e-zine. Next is a questionaire that may be of use when creating NPC's. The third is to another blog. This one with 3 1d4 random tables to do with undead turning. The last is a random word generator. It generates words in any of 16 languages... including dwarvish and elvish.

Hope someone finds something useful amongst these

               I know  that a lot of people use the gimp so here are a couple of links for stuff on using that. The first is to a site hosting an e-zine (downloadable in pdf but not archived so biggish dl) called (surprise, surprise) Gimp Magazine. It is only up to issue number 5 but looks quite quite well made for a free download. On their site there are a lot of links to gimp related material. The links are on the resources page.

The other link is to GimpUsers.com. This site has 88 different tutorials and links to a number of different versions of the gimp amongst other things.

Hope this is of use.

               Here's a couple of free things I've run into, downloaded and tried. While not strictly related to custom content creation they may still be of use to you. One good thing about them is that there are versions for linux, mac os x, win32, win64 and portable (ie put them on a pen-drive/memory-stick/whatever-you-want-to-call-it). They are both to do with ebooks.

The first is called Sigil (other download sites are available, this is to the current version). Sigil is a WYSIWYG epub editor. This looks great and is a breeze to use. There are a couple of caveats however. While you can paste tables and graphics into it, they will not necessarily look any good. This is not the fault of Sigil per se, but the epub format and the fact that it is designed for ebook readers such as nooks and kobos.

What if you want your lovingly crafted ebook to be in a different format such as for a kindle? This is where the second program comes in. It is called Calibre. It is an ebook manager and as such can convert between several different ebook formats. If it does not have an obscure (or maybe not so obscure) format there is a good chance that there is a plug-in for Calibre that you can download although a lot of these appear to need to be paid for.

The reason that I have put these here and not in the custom content tools section is because they are not strictly speaking custom content tools. They are however relevant to documenting what you create. As an example I was going to release a set of documents in epub format for Micro Maps Version 2, which is where I discovered the problem with tables. That aside I think there is a place for these as further tools in your arsenal.

               You're welcome. BTW if you want more tutorials (and for a slew of different things including the gimp, 3ds max etc.) try the deviantArt resources/tutorials/application reference page

               One thing to be aware of is that some of the categories are a bit on the light side in that area. If you use the navigation on the left to go back up one level and have an explore around you can find more.

               Came across something that some of you may find of use. It's another e-zine and all 42 issues are available to download in pdf format. This one is devoted to Blender and is called BlenderArt Magazine. Having done a (very) quick scan of the main points of each issue there are such things as character modelling, animation, games, blender scripts etc. With (to date) 42 issues and each issue having an overall theme, there is a lot of ground covered all to do with blender.

Hope this is as good as it appears to be and is of use to some of you.

               Additional note about BlenderArt Magazine. 39 out of the 42 issues have files associated with them. A few of these have the files included in the magazine download itself but the rest are separate downloads. The vast majority of these are blend files associated with articles contained within the magazine. One of these extra downloads (sorry can't remember which one) also contains a pdf book on blender. Finally the largest of these extras is 85meg and is not the one that contains the book.
