High Elven City Tileset

There will be night windows as well as day ones.  I made the night-time texture at the same time as the day one, but I haven't implemented the animations yet.  Don't know if I can manage anything fancier than what's standard, in this respect.

Those elven house models look really nice!

What I wonder though is how those skinny elves stay warm inside? You never see chimneys on Elven structures. Maybe they use magic heaters? :-)

Skinny people tend to offset the cold with metabolism.

Great work, Este. *makes grabby hands*

The concave roof and dormers definitely are a super addition.  I've a small question on the weathering of the wood texture (on the walls).  Did you darken it or increase it from your previous image?

               Thanks, all!

3Ravens, the texture is unchanged.  It's a standard TNO texture.  It might well be worth replacing later.

If you consider replacing the texture maybe you should also apply it in a different way so that the planks are aligned horizontally instead of vertically. The way they are now makes the window frames appear too big because their parts are broader than a plank.

Zwerkules, I don't understand what you mean, as the window frames have a different wooden texture, with no planks at all.  (As an aside, I think that vertical planks look better than horizontal ones for this geometry anyway, but I'd be willing to reconsider if enough people disagree.  Edit: could be worth considering making the windowframes narrower too, I suppose.)

Horizontal planks make more sense from a practical engineering standpoint, but I like the vertical planks because they give it an exotic look. Plus, from a stylistic standpoint, vertical striping makes things look taller and thinner.

The planks on the wall texture are behind the window frames and the window bars are broader than one of those planks. I don't think the frames are too big, they just appear too big because of the wall texture.

Well, I can always change the texture mapping so that the wall planks appear wider?  I made them narrower in the tile I just posted, because I thought it looked better, but fair enough if people think it looks worse.

That's what I was imagining too. But could you include a feature or two for some more sinister looking alleyway buildings?

Who said they were drow buildings?

Always that one odd elf shop down the back alley where you can get not-quite legal bits for your latest spells. Eleven smugglers also have a lot more paths to travel than a human one, just being able to teleport contraband in makes them a bit of a thing

... My elves? Not always nice

I'm not sure if I can imagine elves doing sinister deeds. In my mind they're all completely stuck up and above that. Even my Drow (who I proffer to call Svart) are above smuggling, they have bigger goals in mind.

But yeah we both want the same thing. An elven criminal HQ.

Here is an update with some of the work I've been doing on the building terrain.  I have ten tile variants for the middle "_20" tiles, and that's just the start.  These tiles require significant use of shift+r-click, i.e. you need to cycle through the middle tiles to get the look that you want.  I am putting in all the variants I can think of to make it possible to craft whatever shape and size of building you want and still have it look like one, single building.  (And just noticed some texture bugs with some dormer roofs as I posted this - bah.)

Next will come middle tiles with large walkable areas and some little, walkable balconies.  Also, I am working on some side tiles with stairs to get up to there.  Making these tiles veeeery vertical has turned the task of cramming in stairs into something of a challenge, but I have finally managed to cram a configuration that satisfies me into a single tile.  I can relax some of the restrictions if I want to do a 2x1 group with fancier stairs.  The picture below is just to show the general configuration of the single-tile stairs; there's still a lot of work to do to make it look nice, such as stair supports, railings, and modifying underlying building geometry to blend with the stairs.

Once those things are done, I will turn to alleys and middle tiles with trees.

Curiosity has got the better of me. Prior to glass being used for windows there was another method. They would take an animal skin and scrape it very thin. Then to make it more translucent, once the skin had been stretched across the window space, they would rub clear(ish) oil into it making so that as much light as they could get passed through the window. The reason I mention this, is because that is what the windows in the lower illustration remind me of.

That's fascinating, Tarot.  '<img'>  I have actually made the glass part of the texture semi-transparent and associated a .txi file, to try and make it look genuinely reflecting, but the result is only minimally successful.  Of course, the based texture doesn't really look as glassy as I really want anyway.

You could always vary the look with some vine growths up the sides and random flowering window boxes. Just a thought.
