High Elven City Tileset
« on: December 09, 2013, 01:22:32 am »

Does anyone know of a good High-Elven City tileset?  Think stone, but Elven lacework variety.  I'm trying my damnedest to search through custom content, but am really drawing a big 0 on success.

We currently have the ctp_exp_elf_city.hak, but I want something more along the lines of Tirion upon Tuna or Gondolin, and less Caras Galadon (to put it into a LotR frame of reference). There are portions of  ctp_exp_elf_city.hak that fit well enough, but the limitations of that platform terrain make it not completely viable for our needs. I did find one other tileset (blanking on the name) that was based on the Ruins tileset (part of a four-terrain tileset IIRC), but that one is too limited as well from an exterior standpoint.

So far, from what I've seen, the CTP hak has the most promise, but it would require some moderate-heavy modding to make it work.  As I see it, at the least it would need the platform terrain made available on the same level as the grass (with grass/platform "blending" tiles created), the raised terrain would need walls that look like delicate stonework (not wood-sided), and just a few more building options that don't all have tree crowns for roofs, nor leaves for shingles; a tall order, especially for a PW with no modder on staff.  '<img'>

So, any ideas, folks?  What do you use?

Weeeeell, I'm currently working on an elven treetop city tileset with plenty of Tolkien-ish original tiles, but if you're looking for a stone city I could modify it accordingly.  It wouldn't have as many tiles without the platforms and walkways and all that, but it might still be worth something to you.  How big an area would you want to be making?

A large city, Estelindis; somewhere along the lines of 12 x 12 minimum.  And based on the focus of your latest endeavor, I'm beginning to think that what I am looking for might not exist.  Most CC makers share your perceptions that all Elves live "in" the trees, so to speak.

While I don't want to completely remove all elements of a  natural setting, I certainly want to have more of a city feel for this area.   It is something that is lacking in all the Elvish themed tilesets.

If you can manage to help, certainly I'll accept it, and gladly.  '<img'>

Will you share some screenshots, estelindis? '<img'>

Zwerkules has some excellent elven villas in his rural tileset, but its just that; a rural set.

I've got a few more unfinished ones, but even with those added you could only make a city
built on grass with them. They are meant for an elven village.

I'd be very happy to help, WoC_Builder, as soon as I can get the set into a workable state.  It's usable as it stands, but it's not really flexible enough to give a decent variety in a 12x12 area if the treetop elements are removed.  They can be replaced by something else, e.g. grass, mountains, cliffs, etc.

And, for the record, I don't believe that all elves live in trees. The Silmarillion is my favourite book.  Heck, my wireless network at home is even called Gondolin.  '<img'>

I'll share some screenshots soon, Hekatoncheires.  I am just adding some pillars to the sides of my house crosser, so not all the tiles have 'em yet.  When I've done that, I'll put some pics up.

Although it is quite a long way from reality,er, so-to-speak, the High Ones of Amethyst, the Inner Elven, live in At'l Lant'n Is, the City of Towers that Sing. Literally glass and ceramic towers designed to harmonize in the wind. (Ambient will be whale song).

Before Moonfall, the Age of Wonder had reached a very high level of arcane and technological abilities. This is reflected in the beauty and grace, to say nothing of the power and endurance of the City of Glass.

One day, I will build this :-)

Until then, something of that style, done in stone and colored glass, is present among the Outer Elven in the Walking Woods:
'Posted

So not *all* CC Makers think of Tarzan with pointy-ears :-)

On the otherhand, the Felen of the Fogwood *do* live up high... but the Child Races will only be available to native players (those who've invested a bit in Amethyst).

Edit to be a bit clearer than a glass darkly, I'm watching what Este does with both interest and anticipation =)

<...because of where he lives>

What about a redskin of the sigil tileset? The city is organic looking and might work.

With some remodelling, that could probably result in some very interesting results. I think you'd do a fair amount of remodelling though for the important features.

               Nice pic, Rolo.  '<img'>

Here are some glimpses at the stuff I've been working on, not including stuff that has too close a relationship to the treetop terrain and walkway crosser to be useful for a stony city.  Does any of this seem like it might be up your street, if the textures were changed?

Elven house crosser:

And a little pic from the toolset showing some of the variations between tiles in this crosser:

2x2 building:

Small tower (in which I just noticed a bug that needs to be fixed, bah):

Adapted version of the Cloaktower (so not totally original); it's actually so hard to see the top of this in-game that I had to resort to a toolset shot, making me think I should reduce it in height:

Wow! Those look great, Estelindis. Very nice!

Also, Rolo, how exactly do you redskin a tileset? Must all the buildings be hollowed from giant potatoes? j/k lol.

I think we'd need to ask Paul for his technique, but I imagine it involves a Mrs. Potato head, something called a Monty (full variety), a pole and some cheeze-whiz to make the spud blush...
