               Dark Sun 3E campaing Rules.

Athasian equipment.
Metal is very rare in Athas, as a consequence, most of the armors and weapons are made from "primitive" materials, like leather, fur, bone, chitin, obsidian, stone, etc....

Little notes:

About Dragons; There are not standard dragons, chromatic, metallic, etc in Athas, the only true dragon is the Dragon of Tyr....

About Ousiders; The only outsiders availeables in Athas are the elementals. This world is isolated from most of the planes, but the elemental planes are one of the exceptions. So there is no celestials, no fiends, neither Gods....

Dark Sun Ideas/Images/Inspiration for December 2013 Challenge
« Reply #3 on: November 23, 2013, 08:24:43 pm »

I had NWN for about three years before I actually twigged that it had anything to do with D&D... I know, basically, nothing about D&D, let alone its offshoots, other than what I've picked up from playing NWN and more so NWN2... Hadn't heard of "Dark Sun" until I went and delved about on Go Ogle to find images to see if this thread inspired me to do anything.

The Dark Sun world strikes me as very interesting. It'd be nice to see some of those bone, chitin, etc weapons (hint, hint)... and some of the creatures could be useful for a wide variety of settings...

I've set my sights upon the Tembo. It's a cute little devil, the sort of thing I'd have as a pet... Failing that, I'm going to have a go at creating a digital one come December.

However, I note that there are a plethora of images of the Tembo on the internet and almost every single one depicts the creature somewhat differently, veering between a spiny hyena to a mutant smilodon all the way to a nuclear stegosaur. One picture even made it look a bit like a toad. Different artists over time, I guess...

Point is, as the illustrations often look quite different, I presume I have a certain freedom to create my own version that has the basic attributes of the thing? (Sabre fangs, dorsal spikes, etc).

Or does it have to match a specific D&D rulebook X version?

Just thought I'd ask before December comes along.

(PS:- Assuming my rubbish gmax abilities cooperate, I might try doing the Jhakar and Zhackal too... and make a set of "Weird Dark Sun Dog-like Things".)

Thank You PHOD, any DS content would be welcome, especially because there isn't almost nothing about it in the Vault.

Like in other campings, depending of the edition, and the artist, DS creatures can looks different. I don't wish to impose any stetic standard. I think as long as the creature are more or less recognizable It'll be OK.

My first thought, was to use Dungeon Magazine Articles about DS, as reference, because it's the only 3rd E official material that I know (those are the same rules use in NWN), and use 2nd E and 4th E material when a topic is no covert in the 3rd E.
But  this only matter about rules, available classes, creatures stats, etc; Not about stetic appearance.

However I would like to suggest to builders; That Athas is a hostile, desolate, wasteland world, when surviving is the first matter, and that should be taken in mind, for their designs...

I know the Kirre (One of the things I'm aiming to make once this starts) mysteriously change from their cream/brown they sport in 2E to green and black, the Tigone's colours

However, it also has a better Silt Runner that looks like a running lizardman and not Generic Lizardman 52, and implies the Tembo hunts down the loved ones of its victims for the hell of it. Also looks like of rodent-y

@Mecheon: A Kirre would be a great addition thanks, perhaps the original colors in 2E are a better camouflage in a desert environment, but is just my opinion.

@DM_Vecna: There are some good models of sandals in Fangfeymim greek set

Right. I'm definitely going to try a Tembo...
This is the image I found that first attracted my attention and made me think it would be a nice pet. So this will be the main influence on how my doubtless less impressive digital one will (hopefully) look, with a few features more in line with the version in the links above...'Posted

The Champions of Rajaat aka Dragon kings aka Sorcerer-kings:

Free Manuals - The Fifteen champions of Rajaat , Champion of Rajaat Template,

'Posted 'Posted 'Posted
'Posted

The City-States of Athas, are ruled by several "dragon kings," former Champions of Rajaat. Rajaat is/was the first sorcerer of Athas, an ancient being who discovered magic on his world. He was obsessed with returning the world to its Blue Age, an age when the world was covered by a vast ocean and ruled by halflings, the most ancient of the races besides the thri-kreen. Using his Champions as proxies, he sought to exterminate all of the "impure" races.

At Rajaat's command, the Champions then began the Cleansing Wars, a campaign of genocide against all non-humans that spanned more than a thousand years. However, when they learned that Rajaat intended to "cleanse" humans as well, they rebelled against him. The rebels could not slay their master because of his vast and unparalleled knowledge of sorcery, but instead imprisoned him in a place called "the Hollow". In order to maintain Rajaat's prison, they worked in concert to turn Champion Borys of Ebe into a fully-fledged dragon, capable of maintaining their erstwhile master's magical prison.

From then on, each of the remaining Champions stopped warring on the races of Athas and became a sorcerer-king or sorcerer-queen of his or her own city-state.

The Dragon of Tyr

'Posted 'Posted 'Posted
This is the unique true Dragon in Athas, for the moment, but most of the sorcerer-kings, are in half-way to become in one. Depending on the artist and the edition, It could have wings or not. However I think that even if it have wings, it's not available to fly, for the moment...

Dregoth
'Posted
He is the only dragon-lich in Athas. He was murdered when he was close to complete his transformation into a true dragon; But he was raised from death by his loyal High Templar as an undead dragon lich.

Avangion

'Posted  'Posted

This is the nemesis of the dragon, a pure preserver creature. Unfortunately no true avangion exist yet in Athas. However the sorcerer-king Keltis (Oronis) was able to not only halt his dragon metamorphosis, but reverse it completely and begin the transformation into an avangion...

               Athasian magic:

Arcane Magic:
It's quite less common in Athas than in other worlds. And this is because, that AM have a negative effect on living things; Magic derives directly from the life force of the surrounding ecosystem. Past Abuses in the use of AM are the main reason why Athas is a desolate wasteland now a days. As a consequence two "magic schools" have been created.

Defilers, those obsessed with the power that magic can bring to them, and don't care about their consequences. A low level defiler can kill surrounding plants, when cast spells, But a High level defliter can kill surrounding animals and persons.

Preservers, those have interest in arcane knowledge, but use magic with moderation, trying don't make irreparable damage to the enviroment. The Veiled Alliance, an underground organization of preservers with resistance cells in all city states and most major villages, is bent on the destruction of the defiling Sorcerer-Kings.

However Most ordinary people on Athas don't know that preservers exist and treat all arcane spellcasters as defilers, responsible for the destruction of Athas.

A part from this Arcane Magic works like in other campaings. But spells that summon outsiders should be forbidden or replaced by elemental creatures.

Divine Magic:

Gods don't exist in Athas, and never will do.

Druids receive their powers from nature itself. Druids must also choose between humanity and elemental transformation (becoming a "spirit of the land") when reaching 20th level

Elemental clerics worship, one of the elements, fire, water, earth, air, and receive their powers from the elemental planes. They are quite similar to a common cleric, however they only have available elemental & paraelemental domains

Templars are those who worship and served to one of the dragon kings, they receive their powers from their own dragon king. I have read, that this is possible because, a residual consequence from the ritual that begun the metamorphosis of the dragon kings, which created a link between the Dragon kings and a plane know as "The Black". Even dragon kings aren't conscious of this Link. I have read that it was created accidentally. and any, now a days, defiler who starts the dragon metamorphosis won't be able to give powers to anybody

A part from this Divine magic works like in other campaigns. But spells that summon outsiders should be forbidden or replaced by elemental creatures.

Psionic

Athas is the world of psionic, it's as common as arcane magic in other campaigns. Most of the Athas creatures have some psionic skill. There are psionic schools in all of the city states.
Psionic is a basic class available for players, also there is the wild psionic variation. I don't know well the difference between both, but I think that, it must be something similar to the difference between a wizard and a sorcerer.

               Playable races:

Aarakocra - A race of winged bird men, formerly appearing as monsters in other settings.

'Posted

Dwarf - Dwarves are short and stocky demi-humans who are single-minded in their pursuit of a
task. They differ from standard dwarves in that they are completely bald and have no body or facial hair.

'Posted 'Posted

Elf - Distinct from traditional elves not only in flavor (often thieves and marauders) but also physically. They are taller than traditional elves and known for being able to run long distances. They have shorter life spans compared to elves of other worlds, and live for the moment...there might not be another.

'Posted http://www.penandpap...66&d=1250818063 'Posted

Half-Elf - More or less like in other campaigns.

'Posted

Half-Giant - More intelligent than their counterparts in other worlds, but with a tendency to change personalities over time. They were magically created by the sorcerer kings from giant and human stock.

'Posted  'Posted

Halfling - Generally known for being savage, often cannibalistic, tribal people. However, there is an ancient community of Halflings with a civilization based on life-shaping.

'Posted 'Posted

Human - More or less like in other campaigns. Perhaps Dark skin and hair are more common in Athas because of the weather...

'Posted 'Posted

Mul - A dwarven-human hybrid, they are able to work for long periods of time without rest, making them the most valuable of slaves.

'Posted

Pterran - A shamanistic race of reptilian humanoids. Essentially humanoid pterodactyls with only vestigial stumps on their shoulders where wings had once been.

'Posted

Thri-Kreen - A race of savage mantis people. Dark sun is the true native campaign for the Thri-kreens.

'Posted 'Posted

In the Paizo (Dungeon magazine)
Elan
Maenad

4th Edition:

Eladrin (added in 4th edition) - An isolationist race of veiled warriors clinging to their dying homeland.

Goliath in 4th Edition, it seems to have replaced  the half-giants. I can't say any real reason why goliaths don't fit with Dark Sun, apart from the fact that they haven't belonged to this campaign in the previous editions. however I prefer the classical half-giants.

'Posted 'Posted

Tiefling (added in the 4th edition setting) - A demon-cursed race of bloodthirsty desert raiders. I don't know what is the 4th E excuse to introduce tieflings in Athas. However there is no way to have fiends in Dark Sun. so tieflings should be forbidden. Personally I consider this race absolutely inadequate for Dark Sun.

Dray (Dragonborn in 4th edition) - Created by Dregoth and live in New Giustinal. Dray, originally wasn't conceived to be a playable race, and they had a slender a quite different appearance than 4th E dragonborn. Also dragonborn aparence are based on standar dragons like chromatic and metalic which don't exist in Athas. Because of that I consider dragonborn a bad choice for Dray race.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gnomes & half-orcs - Gnomes and orcs among many other races were exterminated ages ago by The Champions of Rajaat. So any of this races or their hybrids exist now a days in Athas.
