gmax Tech Tip
« on: September 10, 2013, 09:22:02 am »

Just wanted to post this somewhere in the hopes of helping out (not sure - maybe belongs in the Tech Support section....).

Anyhow, finally got around to upgrading to Win7 from XP (was happy on XP - did all I needed it to do) and had to go thru a few hurdles to get proper rendering for NWN.  Note to other using ATI cards (I have a 6850), the out of the box ATI drivers for Win7 use an emulation library for OpenGL thru DirectX.  So if you use a tool like ATI Tray Tools to set AA/AF, then you have to set them for DirectX and not OpenGL to see the effect.

Sidetracked.....onto gmax '<img'>

gmax also had some rendering issues with odd artifacts and flickering and other such oddities.  Found out from this thread: www.turbosquid.com/Forum/Index.cfm/stgAct/PostList/intThreadID/20671 that gmax can be configured to use different hardware drivers (or software mode if all else fails) for rendering the viewports.  I switched from OpenGL rendering to DirectX and it cleared up all my issues.

Hopefully this helps if anyone has these same issues with gmax.  I would hazard a guess that the same setting options for viewport rendering exist in the full version of Max as well.
