Enlightened Self Interest
« on: April 06, 2013, 12:57:28 am »

Just in case the Dr. Who theme ever wins the votes for a particular months ccc and because I want to see the Dr. Who modules that PHOD is working on actually finished before the 50th anniversary arrives in November I thought I'd ask if there is anyone interested in looking over a set of tutorials on doing just that that I've found on the web. Then if they think they could make one (or more)...

Thanks in advance for any interest shown as I am crud at 3d modelling (everything I do is flat).

I'm crud at 3d modelling too... Hm. I'd be ever so grateful. Just one model and a basic texture, that's all I need to do all the variant colours and so forth... um... please...?

I'll produce the geometry for you if you are willing to make it work in NWN. I just need reference pictures and a real world idea of scale. I'll model it so that each model unit is equal to one meter.

If you provide a reference txture I might even texture it to as I am good at the UV Mapping dance.

Now that I am back in the world of Unity3D I am even less motivated to bother learning NWN's art asset pipeline, but I am having fun creating art again.

[edit] Oh you mean a dalek.... ick, but ok.

well I can animate too, but don't know if it would work in NWN.

I'll do the heavy lifting on that dalek if someone else is interested in converting an FBX into an MDL.

[edit 2] Alright, I'm not interested in the subject, but I'll do the model.  found some dimensions online so this will be easier than I thought. I'll shoot for low poly.

               NWN2 models detected,

exterminate, exterminate, exterminate

( if you just get the voiceset right, you will have a very classic monster in these '<img'>

( the halloween module for nwn2 had some dr who stuff like a Tardis in it )

Kids are now pulling me away, but here's a shot in one app I use to model inorganic shapes. I'll use another before I am through with a nicer render and very nice animator. Doubt I'll use blender for this.

@henesua, thank you for this. BTW did you look at that tutorial on building virtual daleks that I included the link for in my original post?

@painofdungeoneternal I don't suppose you know what thread this was organised in do you? I've had a quick look (only went through 2 pages on each of the headings on the nwn2 threads) and couldn't see mention of it.

The halloween module, with the part done by Johnny Ree is the only current Dr. Who content I know of. It's from early on in NWN2's life and probably has some of his first models successfully done in it, might be from the original bioboards that got destroyed. I would look for it on the vault, think it actually got pulled by some author dispute, but that Rolo fixed it recently, not really sure. ( he set up a company called bouncy rock, so he might have some notes at http://nwn2.bouncyrock.com/ but that looks like it's got missing things, probably has some of the best modeling I've ever seen so far, even though the halloween stuff was not the best examples, there were teletubbies in it as well )

I did see the tutorial. I am however primarily building from some diagrams I found online.

My claims of keeping this low-poly (less than 1000 tris) will be broken. Those 56 hemishpheres are going to be a problem. If I give them an octagonal outline, thats 14 tri's each, and they definitely won't look like spheres.

Anyway, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Made a little progress this morning.

Finished stage 3 - those infernal balls. 54 of em at 12 tris each is pricey but you can't have a dalek without em I think. (I'm wondering if it would work to reduce them to 4 or 6 tri's each as diamonds or hexagons with a middle vertex raised up. Probably not...)

Next up the gun and the suction cup.

               @henesua

Roughly where are you with poly-count?  I'm attempting to rip the models from Dr. Who - The Adventure Games, one of the Dalek models I found looks like it will have 15023 verts and 5018 faces.  Not sure yet if that is the entire Dalek, or possibly just the base.  There are two meshes for the particular model I'm working with, not sure yet what either looks like.  If I can figure things out properly I'll be able to get Daleks, Cybermen, the 11th Doctor, Amy Pond and interior and exterior models of the Tardis.  Not to mention all the textures, which I can already rip.  Textures are the easiest.  I may even be able to get animations, but they are usually the most difficult.

I estimate that my Dalek is about half that at 2500 - 3000 tris. When I move the Dalek into Cheetah I'll  get to optimizing and let you know the final.

               Geometry is substantially complete.

After texturing I'll need someone to step up and help with getting this into NWN.

FYI - 1476ish faces now. We'll see if I can do any more magic to get that number down.
