New Building Placeable Imports
« on: March 18, 2013, 09:49:10 am »

With the help of the forum members and some research, I'm importing some new buildings for use in the game. All together there will be at least a couple of hundred, and I'll try to release in packs of 50 or so. so far I've done about 30.

I'm importing from 2 sources - the strategy games Empire Earth 2 and 3. EE2 is about the same polys as NWN1 and uses textures of 512x512. EE3 has polys usually about 5-10k and uses eirher 512x1024 or 1024x1024.

EE2 has 4 main civ types of buildings - Far East, Middle East, Western Europe and Americas, and also has snow covered versions. EE3 drops the American building type and has only 3, without snow. I've resized them to what I think is the proper size, put them in a hak with a modified placeable.2da (I'm using the 6000-6300 range) and the only issue so far is I haven't found a way to get the shadows to show up. As with anything, some work better than others but hopefully everyone will find a use for at least a couple of them.

A few pics are below. I have to adjust a couple of early ones to make better pwks and remove some built in doors.

Most of these are EE3 except the 1st tower, which uses a green base for the Far East, blue for Western Europe and normal sand tones for  middle east. EE2 is a bit more natural.

Basic building types for each civ are things like houses, temples, markets, forts, barracks, docks, etc.

Those look really nice. Now can I be really cheeky here and make a request. Could you see your way clear to, once you have finished importing and releasing them, to then scale some (or even better all) to make miniatures for use in mapping, giant/gulliver's travels etc. Please?

Even though the polycount is close to NWN, the actual models are very small on import to gmax compared to NWN size. For EE2, size is a bit variable but I'm starting with an enlarge of about x13000 and adjusting up or down from there. For EE3, so far its been a constant x300,000!

When done, it would probably be best if you let me know which ones you think would be useful for your map project - I'm thinking there's 200+ buildings, plus the winter versions of some of them, plus I plan to add some of the rocks and trees/ bushes to add some more variety, and some of  them come in normal/ fall/ winter version. Each resize would probably be quick - import in, resize, rename to a different name and resize out I think.

Last, there's some good versions in EE2/ EE3/ Civ 4 of some of the animals added that really need a facelift that I'd like to try upgrading - the elephant, camel and dolphin to think of a few. I haven't tried an animal yet, but it looks like I would have to chop up the single mesh into pieces,  line each piece up with the NWN piece, delete the original and rename the new piece to match the old..

Unless there's an easier way?

To be honest, I'm interested in whatever you would care to try. While thegeorge's Map Placeables are good, I think more are really needed. On a selfish note I would personnally like any new ones to be on a similar scale so that the new and the old would work equally well with my original Map Mats (link in my sig). Thank you for replying so quickly.

I am afraid that I have no knowledge that would help you with any 3d problems you may have as everything that I have created thus far has been absolutely flat and all my modelling is done in notepad++.

               <wishing he had...>

Depending on how complicated the original is, you might cut up a single mesh into two or three parts and use a drastically optimized version of the original mesh as bones.

I.e. For the camel, divide the new mesh behind the shoulder blades and scale old & new meshes so they fit each other. Simplify the bah-geesus out of the old mesh (you want it basically for shadow casting) and make the new mesh "skin".

Limitations: no more than 16(?) bones per skin (I never add more than 15) and no more tha 4 bones can influence any single vertex.

But that would be both easier and better looking than trying to convert a single mesh creature to a parts-based creature.

IMO :-)

Edit: oh! And I'm loving the buildings :-)

<...a thicker skin>

I'm up to 37 - I'll probably release the 1st group when I get to 50. Stay tuned

Do you have anything that would make for a nice Dwarven Stronghold?

I second that, being in the middle of a dwarf-related build as well.

Both have small fortresses that might look good against, or placed partially, in a mountainside. I was going to put those in the second pack of 50, but I can move them up to finish up the 1st pack. Screenshots up in a day or two, hopefully up on the vault in a week or so.
