February 2013 Custom Content Challenge: Plants
« Reply #60 on: February 10, 2013, 10:44:29 pm »

I've just this second realised that there is a glaring omission on the vault as far as plants are concerned. In fact I can't believe that nobodies made it before now. I know it is terribly late in the day as far as this months challenge is concerned but would someone please consider making some tumble-weed.  It would add so much to the atmosphere of desert and semi-desrt areas. Please.

I wasn't planning an entry for this month, but the idea struck me this morning. Lily pads would be quick and easy to do as a placeable. My plan is to do a handful of lilypads, including Victoria Amazonica, and a variety of Nymphaea and Nuphar.

A further idea was to create an alternative water bridge using walkable lily pads to go in various tilesets, but I doubt I'd get that finished by the end of the month, it will have to be a later addition.

the lily pad bridge idea is cool. Unique and very welcome for any swamp like location '<img'>

You must be thinking of something like this: http://en.wikipedia....ictoria_(plant)

As a side-thought. Placeables for paths and roads have been made in the past, but has anyone thought of making a placeable for a 'stream' that could be used at least on flat terrain for stream-less tilesets.

Also, is a 'walkable ground placeable technically possible or is that something that can only be a tileset feature?

------

Another plant-related idea.  We know that a 'stocks' placeable had been created in the past that is capable of holding a PC in place. I wonder if a similar plant placeable can be created, giving the illusion of a PC being trapped in a place by plant vines? It would be a very cool thing to have.

Or various kinds of leafy robes and other plant-based grab.

That's exactly what I was thinking of: Victoria Amazonica. I think the catch with a placeable stream would be making it look right, since it has to sit on top of the tile. However, it does give me an idea for some stream variations - what about narrow or very shallow streams?

It looks like most of my tile contributions are to be water based... I was planning on iced over water as an addition to winter tilesets, while keeping open water possible too, plus some tile groups for streams for gradual turns. Now a couple more stream types, and lily pad bridges.

@MerricksDad - I for one would like to see your plant generator finished even if I can't get gmax to export stuff properly (that's my excuse for only doing 2d and I'm sticking with it ('^_^')). I tried your link to TreeGen and nothing happens no web page and no time-out either weird.

TR

I'm definitely going to do that project too, but just not this week. Not sure about the link I provided, seemed to work when I linked it. BUT I did see the script was for 3dsmax and might be calling on some stuff that gmax either doesn't have or has blocked. I linked right to a page rather than the script itself though,....so not sure. I'll poke it when I get a sec

Morbol beta 0.1....however after working a skin onto it, its giving me some issues in-game now. I started over, using the skin first and working backward to the skeleton and its working perfectly so far. I got a texture already finished as well. As soon as large morbol is done, I'll be on to alternate skins. I need some cool skunk cabbage textures....

I can't wait to get this one out! I think though I need to NOT do whatever next month's turns out to be (unless its dr who), so I can get my tileset tools and stuff packaged.

Somewhere more towards the beginning of this thread someone asked for fungi inventory icons, well...

'Posted

I hope these 33 will do. I've submitted them already (just this minute). Note all I've sent is a hak containing the icons which use the scroll entry in baseitems.2da 'cos I couldn't get it to accept a new entry without throwing an access violation.

One other thing, the reason the first 2 on the top line look so similar is because they are the same fungus. The white one is how it looks in daylight, while the second is how it looks at night due to its bioluminescence.

@ShaDoOoW - thanks. Hopefully some chaotic evil module builder will now send the PC off to find a particular fungus and after 32 failures say "Finally you found it" ('^_^').

Have to finish converting the textures on the existing geometry and then build the new geometry (head foliage, back foliage, arm foliage).

Malboro is fully skinned and works perfect in game. I had to split the skin into I think 5 parts to get it to not crash on model unload. Its fully textured too. I'm going to do some alt textures before deadline, but mostly I want to move on to other skins for the same critter now. Also before release, this one will get some decals and maybe some emitters. I also want to do a dark spore and light spore breath weapon.
