From a player's perspective, the only HAKs you need are the HAKs that a module uses. There is no point to downloading a bunch of content just to have it. I would look for modules that you want to play, and then go and get the content that is required to play it.
Agreed. The way I think of the difference between haks and overrides, essentially, is the difference between
builder and
player customization. Haks are intended for the module
builder to customize the play experience provided by the adventure
he has created. Overrides are intended for the
player to customize the play experience he wants
his NWN client to play with. Unless you're a builder and thinking of building with it, there's no reason to download and install a hak unless you want to play a particular module, and the builder of that module has told you need that hak in order to play it.
Since we are talking Custom Content, why not try a module that show cases the stuff:
