I think this needs to be discussed - While the vaults flaky...

@Zwerkules: It was for 2, and it's unfortunate you haven't been enjoying the same amount of downloads.  Now, if I were to take the same actions as you with regard to the download numbers, should I stop using the Vault as you've stopped using the Nexus?  I wouldn't do that.  I think it's worthwhile to continue using both, personally.  The reason I posted the numbers was not to say that anyone should switch to one exclusively, but to show that there is a significant audience there that's separate -- in addition -- to the audience on the Vault.

But looking at the entry for your Medieval Tileset on the Nexus (which is really nice work, BTW), I do have some suggestions on how you could get more interested people downloading your work.  I think the major difference between yours and mine is that my entries have very detailed descriptions on the purpose and usage of my mods, and I think yours would benefit from something like that, too.

The reason is that on the Vault, most downloaders there probably already know the basics of what these files are, and what they're for -- I say "most", because everyone has to get started sometime, and when I was first getting into these games last year I had a hell of a time figuring out what any of these files were for and which ones I needed, and where to put them.  On the Nexus, a large proportion of people are inexperienced with modding these games, and are just getting into it themselves.  So it would help to have some instructions, or links to instructions, as well as just a description of your hakpak (like how many tiles it has, at least).  Something friendly to beginners.

With most files you don't even know if you're talking NWN1 or 2.

Here's a screenshot to help show where that information is displayed, on each file's page.

Oh! Sorry about that, then! I assumed this was about finding a new home for the Custom Content community of NWN! If this is not about abandoning the Vault, then I am all for it! (^__^)

No not abandoning the vault more like making sure the lifeboats are ready if the ship does sink.

Thanks for the information, Tchos! I will upload the latest version of the Medieval City on the Nexus and give it a better description.

You know, what bothered me far more than that I got so few downloads there is that the nude haks got so many.
Why bother making tilesets if all the builders want is a hak to make their npcs naked? '<img'>

The nude hak has override version, doesnt it? so it nos only builders who downloads it - but players. So that might be it - Im used to it anyway, the situation around scripts - which is what I do - was always liek this even at vault.

For what it's worth, guys, I am just a player and really appreciate all your efforts. Even if I don't download a script or hak, I hope a builder will do so. I do download lots of haks and placeables for tinkering in the toolset, but always hope someone with more skills and commitment will put these goodies in a new module someday.

That being said, I went to the Nexus the other day to check on Borden's Iron Foundry, and found I needed an account to download it (due to file size). I suppose I will get around to registering, but this is something of a drawback. Meh, that's just my two cents.

I also greatly respect custom content creators, and am grateful for them providing their work.  I put it to good use when I can.

P.S. to Bard: It may be a bit of an inconvenience, but one thing it does let you do is add a mod to your tracked file list, so it'll tell you when it's been updated without having to check it.

I put the foundry bit on the vault for approval on the 17th. It's not been updated since the 16th... Anyone know what's happening?

Yeah Rolo is out for awhile so no one is taking care of the Vault on a regular basis.

Yes this registration enforcement also hold me away from nexus for a first time. Its not nice.''

I think this is a timely discourse, unfortunately I'm afraid I don't have much to contribute. We do, however, need to seriously consider the reality that the vault won't last forever. When it shuts down there may be little or no warning and we are going to lose TONS of wonderful content.

Unfortunately I also don't particularly want to work with the nexus. I am strictly a hobbyist. I'm in this for fun and I don't always remember where everything came from (although that's less of a problem since I quit smoking weed). I don't want to have to deal with a bunch of barracks room lawyers if I forget an attribution or get one wrong.

Just my two cents...

It seems to me the key isn't so much file storage. The cloud can provide that. The key is consolidating all the download information into a single database and providing a user-friendly UI to search that information. I also think it's important for this "gateway" site to have optional login functionality and commenting/rating scales as well.

I think it's important to avoid setting this site up as a copyright enforcer. A simple disclaimer asking that everyone respect the downloading requirements of the host site or individual file description should suffice, but we should not get involved with enforcement. Users who are not willing to accept this "honor system" do not NEED to share their links on this database. Setting up a user, or a number of users, as a copyright arbiter will only invite rancor and infighting. In the end the database will fail. It should simply present itself as a central depository of links to custom content. No more than that. The system should be set up to run with as little human interaction as possible, and the only function of site admins should be spam removal, removal of infected files, remval of dead links, and ranking/commenting exploits which we'll need to rely on the community to report.

On the topic of copyright enforcement at the nexus: well, Skyrim nexus has been chock full of ripped content from The a certain witchery feeling game for most of its existance, so clearly they're aren't particularly stringent with their requirements.

Actually, according to four moderators in this thread, CD Project RED gave explicit permission for their content to be ported by modders into other games, and the same is true for content from the game S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
