About 2DA's and Leveling up
« on: August 22, 2012, 05:01:49 pm »

I know that if you have the Skills.2da customized on client side - that will allow the player to see an augmented Skills screen.
(With a new Skill present - if you add an extra row etc)

However-
Is my server able to interact/read from their Skill levels?
Will my server need Skills.2da in its own override folder as well as the client?

Also - Is skills.2da one of those critical 2da's that clients MUST have the identical server version to play?

I've made a new subrace, faerie - and they have light based power.
So I plan on making a new Skill or something, called 'Illumination' or something (Anything similar to it, that I can find in the tlk file)

And the higher the Illumination skill, the more proficient they are with their magical light powers.
But in order for people to level it up, they will likely need the skills 2da from my server to see the skill in their level up screen.

               Yes that's correct.

Usualy in such cases (skills, feats, etc) it will need to be both in the client and server override to function.Such is case with custom cleric domains, for example.

It is also recommended that players do not try to "create new character" but instead click to load one, THEN create a new character (ala d20 modern), as neverwinter wont load many 2da modifications initially...

Carcerian, preloading a character prior to making a new character is the secret to solving skill overload?

Well you go to the list of characters available, then create a new character instead, thats what the d20 ppl insist you do, for example, as they modify MANY 2das rather radically. I have not tested w/ skills personally, but that's the theory at least.

Also some 2das work fine in haks, others don't, so it's basicly a trial and error thing, as a precaution i just keep all my pw 2das in the override as well as my top hak.

The ones clients need tend to be a small list, thankfully.

               thx guys,
Yeah, managed to get it working.
I created my new skill (Light)
Unfortunately, because I am trying to re-use as much vanilla resources as possible, I am limited to strings that exist in the dialog.tlk

'Image

Its still functional, just means that the skill itself isnt descriptive.
Had to do this via override on the server, and override on client - Which I can live with, as it means it wont prevent people coming to the server without the 2da - they just wont see the skills I have added.
