January 2012 Custom Content Challenge: Rogues stuff

Did anyone adopt the Wanted Poster
idea? As I've finally managed to persuade gMax to export my bloodstain after
a week of trying (I suspect Danmar's wonderful tutorials are a tad
obsolete in places).  I hit on the idea of putting the single plane
vertically and sticking a poster on it.  So far I've managed this...

If no one else is doing such things I'll keep going but I suspect I may be a bit of a pain with the questions so I'll appologise in advance.

I like the posters you've got in the pic, but I think they could use a minor adjustment to the texture.  The pictures appear to be out of place, or too white on the parchment background.

I'm not sure what you use for an image editing program.  I use photoshop myself.  I would layer the picture on top of the parchment, then set the picture layer as "multiply" instead of "normal", which would cause anything lighter than the parchment to vanish and the picture to look more like it was drawn directly on the parchment poster.

As far as questions go, I see that as part of what this challenge is for...people learning new things and challenging themselves to make something new.  Ask away.

Thanks Amethyst Dragon, those portraits were modified in Photoshop (then exported to a DTP) but the white in the texture comes from the "charcoal and chalk" filter I used to make them look hand drawn.  I see what you mean, thankfully those were the only two textures I made with that filter (there are six others). I'll also try mixing the parchment background and the text/picture in photoshop rather than the DTP for the added control you mentioned (and the eraser!).

Thanks again  '<img'>

@Borden - Awesome stuff!  How badly did Pen threaten you to get those made?  *grins*

@Ty - Hey you.  *hugs*  Great start on the posters!

I'd do the charcoal and chalk to keep the hand-drawn aspect (and end up with a non-colored picture), then set the layer to multiply.  I don't think it wouldn't look good (or, in my opinion, correct) with color.  If you do both the parchement and picture as one texture, you can just use the alpha channel to control transparency and get the uneven edges.

No threats needed. I just got inspired. Going to do rotatey / slidy bit for the dungeons next I think. Hard to find suitable walls sections to adapt though.

Tyndrel, those look quite nice. I agree with The Amethyst Dragon's suggestions, but another blending method you may want to experiment with would be Overlay, or even Darken. That last one would pretty much ignore any of the white areas too. Also, a good filter effect to make things look hand drawn is Poster Edges. I use that a lot. Sometimes it works well when layered as layer copy over the normal layer you're working with. Experiment with layer transparencies when trying these effects too. I just made some portraits recently using those methods, starting with plain old screen captures in the toolset, if you want to see what I mean: example. I was going for more of a hand painted effect for those, but I wanted to give you an idea of what I mean about the poster edges.

And there's plenty of room for extra wanted posters. I was thinking about doing one or two myself. "Wanted, Cestus Dei, for ale and cheese theft." 'Posted Haven't decided on a reward for that yet...

I have been hoping *someone* would! The Lass' idea is just too good to let pass :-)

Perhaps, in addition to the lovely frame Izk mentioned, you could put up a poster of the shadier people on the boards... calvinthesneak (just 'cuz his name), ShadoOow, Olivier Leroux, Vibrant Penumbra, etc

I know that *I* would love to post that rogues-gallery on the CCMaker's group!

Edit: Hell, I'd like to see the whole gallery of posters in its own stickied thread!

Any chance of variant posters pinned up with arrows?

               <perks up...>

Oh, yes!

Or a wanted poster defaced by the wantee? The face cut out?

Stop that, _six! You always make me itch to *do* things and Cestus has locked me out of the Soulforge :-(
Edit: *looks up from his scrying gem* But his texture map for the Vault is looking pretty tasty ;-)

I was thinking of one ripped in half, half on the wall, half on the floor, but only because I found a nice ripped background. As for arrows, it's a bit beyond me at the moment, those posters are my second and third ever creations in GMax (after Danmar's bloodstain tutorial). The poster on the right still thinks it is a bloodstain!  There are placeable arrows somewhere... 1.69 or CEP.   Sadly I have squillions of ideas but only a miniscule amount of ability...  as yet  '<img'>
