Request: Warforged and Shifter part-based models
« on: October 23, 2011, 09:05:56 pm »

I'm working on an Eberron module, and the lack of Eberron related content for NWN1 is not lost on me as I create my module. So if this subforum takes requests, I'd like to see some parts for the Warforged and Shifter races from Eberron.

I'm not asking for a whole part-based model set for both races, because after seeing how much time it took to make things like the "dynamic goblins" pack I don't want to waste the time of CC makers who could be making other awesome things. So I plan on using the base player races (half-orc and human in this instance) to pretend that the Warforged and Shifter are dynamic races. I plan on doing this by asking only for the "underwear" parts to be created, because then any part that isn't defined by the equipped armor will use the custom part. For instance, Pale Masters who have no armor on their left arm have a skeleton arm there, but if there is armor the skeleton arm is covered up.

So here are the specs I'm looking for:

Warforged
Base Race: Half-orc and Human (two sets)

I'm asking for two sets for the warforged (which may or may not be just rescaled versions of the same thing, depending on how it looks) because I'd like to make Warforged of both half-orc and human sizes. Only male versions of the models need to be created, as I plan to keep the warforged generless in appearance (and the "none" gender uses the male model).

Also, warforged arms and such can potentially be used for cyber limbs in a sci-fi setting, if you want to make something useful to a lot of modders in one project. '<img'>

Edit: If possible, I'd like the Warforged's metal and wood textures to be mapped to the "skin" and "tattoo 2" tones in the PLT file, so that I can edit a Warforged's tones on a per-NPC basis.

Possible reference images for the Warforged body parts (open in a new window for larger image):

Shifter
Base Race: Human

I'd like Shifters to look mostly human, while still hinting at their lycanthropic heritage with subtle markings. Because shifters aren't genderless like the warforged, I'd need both male and female versions of the models.

Edit: If possible, I'd like the shifter markings to be mapped to the "tattoo 2" tone in the PLT file, so I can edit the appearance of Shifters on a per-NPC basis.

A possible reference that shows what I mean by "mostly human" (shifter is on the far left, open in a new window for larger image):

Well I am going to make a Warforge playable race, but this way down on the list of stuff to get done. So might be awhile from me. I second anyone who jumps on this. I could see making the parts off all the golem parts we got in the game so that could save on time.

I'm bumping this request with an update: I know how to make my method of adding the body parts work, so helping me create these models wouldn't be a waste of time. '<img'>

Using the 200+ range for part models, I was able to make some test files to see how the process works:

More importantly, I'd like to mention that the Shifter body parts only need to be retextures of the base human underwear models, as I only need them to have unique heads (which is for another thread) and the markings shown in the suggested reference image. I would certainly accept new body part models for shifters of course, it's just not a necessity.

So... what is the etiquette for bumping? '<img'>

I take it most people have their own projects already? I suppose that makes sense, even if it doesn't help me.

There's no particular etiquette for bumping, but bear in mind that this isn't really a request forum - It's mostly a place for modders to discuss and collaborate.  So showing up and asking people to do a project for you with no compensation is generally not going to be too successful unless it's a small job and something the modder himself/herself feels they can also benefit from.

3D modeling from a 2d reference is by no means a small job. That said, there are some excellent tutorials stickied to the top of the forum if you'd like to try to learn how, yourself.

Good point. It would probably be a more popular request if people were making more modules in Eberron. (Though technically more Eberron modules might be in production if this sort of material existed...)

I'll take a look at those, but I'm not optimistic from my previous attempts at modelling and retexturing.

If you run into any issues or snags that defy explanation, please ask for assistance - This forum has proven to be consistently one of the friendliest, most helpful/supportive places I've seen on the internet.  Someone will definitely help you work out what your trouble is!

Not promising to finish this, but I figured I'd take a relatively quick shot at it. It's basically just a reskin and slight model adjustment of the vanilla lizardfolk warriors (with the head chopped off, will add a new one). IMO it looks a bit lame, but *shrug* This model doesn't give much room for nice texturing

@_six: That actually looks pretty cool. Are the parts separate models, or is it all one MDL file?

Currently one single model. I might be able to make it as parts for the human appearance type, depending on how well it animates when given human animations. Personally I think it'd function better as a single model. However I might actually be able to use an old trick I remember to make the engine to use a single model and not display any armour, whilst also allowing it to be tinted.

I have a need for someone a lot like this.
Not anywhere near ready to tackle it myself (he doesn't come into play until epic levels). But I have an interest in it. =)

Which means, *Thank you* _six, for starting to play with this ;-)

I'll also need the Wardballs that hover out to the sides (until unleashed) and the Dragonship he flies in and his faithful battletroll sidekick (with *his* two mithril golem Remotes)...

Uh, nevermind that last lot... <he gets side-tracked easily> Do *not*! <snorts> In fact, forget I said anything <whistles>
