How to use custom heads??
« on: May 07, 2011, 06:13:55 am »

Hi.  New to the boards, and new to the game.

I'm wondering how to get the various custom heads (KOTOR heads, etc) to appear within the OC.

I downloaded a few different ones and dumped them into my override folder, but they only show up during character creation.  The NPCs look the same as always.  Am I missing something?

Thanks '<img'> '<img'>

               Hi and welcome.

Nope... none of these will change the OC heads.  In the Override you'll just see them in character creation.

As an aside, could you link to the files you're using?

               Oh.  Well.  Bummer, then.

Kotor heads are here:

The NPCs appearance won't change unless the hak happens to override an old one. I believe the only real way to insure NPCs would have new heads would be to add the new head hak to the module in question, then go into the tool set and swap out old heads for new ones.

To that end, see this post in the old forums about how to add haks to the OC. They were talking about the CEP, but it applies to any other hak as well.

The easiest thing to do would be to renumber the heads to replace the basic ones that you dislike and then drop them in your override folder. You wouldn't have to fiddle in the toolset at all.

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to work always. Some of my recent experiments with heads have shown that if one tries to override base Bioware heads with new ones then the models do override but the textures do not.  Naturally, because the new head model is using the wrong texture, this almost always looks awful.  See, for instance, this example of my attempt to modify female human head 004.  The image on the left shows the head in a non-Bioware slot (hakpak), whereas on the right it uses head slot 004 (override).  Even though a new texture for that head was placed in override, NWN still used the core Bioware texture.

Ultimately, if you want to replace existing Bioware heads, it looks like you have to take the hak route.  Override just won't cut it.

As I put that KotOR Heads hakpak together, by the way, please feel free to PM me any questions you have about it.  There are some quirks to the way the game treats heads that I've discovered during my work; they might help you.

I hadn't thought of that, Este. Thanks. (I'd never used override heads before :X)
