I'm not a big fan of saying something can't be done but I spent an inordinate amount of time trying to create a new ranged weapon and at every turn there is some extremely painful tradeoff one has to make in order to continue. GiveMeDeath's elegant solution required
many custom animations and the use of NWNX work around all of the problems. For firearms, anyway, in which it is unsurpassed IMO.
Even then, though, I don't think it comes with an ammo system which D20's system does.
If you are good at scripting, especially if you are used to using NWNX, you might want to take a look at GiveMeDeath's solution, which does
not require that you sacrifice an existing ranged weapon. You're still not going to have a bolt flying from the player to their target but there's another NWNX plugin which might allow you to accomplish that as well.
If it's just that single one-handed crossbow, though, I don't think you're going to be happy with the amount of work that has to be put in versus the product you get out of the whole process. I'd love to be wrong.
