Diademus's Spider Caves
« on: February 24, 2011, 09:55:04 pm »

I want to use Diademus's spider cave tileset, but this may be against the creator's wishes, as it appears that Diademus pulled this content while someone else reposted it.

I've seen it mentioned in a couple posts here and there that some of the community got together and out together a general license for community content and what constitutes fair use etc....

(1) I would like to see a link to the license the community put together if anyone can share it. Perhaps its staring me in the face and I've been ignoring it so I apologize if I am missing the obvious.

(2) Does anyone actually know what Diademus's wishes were? Does Diademus not want anyone to use the Spider Cave Tileset? Or is Diademus actually ok with his/her work being used? I do notice a few graphic artifacts in the set, and I'm guessing that perhaps an artist of his/her caliber did not want subpar work (subpar in their opinion not mine) out in the world with their name attached to it. I'm just guessing here.

Anyway, I would like to use the set, and possibly fix the lighting artifacts I have found, but will not do so if it is considered to be bad form to do so, or if I am breaking the generally accepted community content license.

I had this as a question myself a few years back. When I first chose haks for my PW, this one was to be a key part of my underdark. When it was removed (and I only found out when the link I'd used failed) I was abit depressed. I considered just using it anyhow and putting the version I had up on an FTP for those needing it in my module. After much internal debate, I reluctantly shelved those areas instead.

A year later ... I spot it on the vault again while (I was desperate) looking through every tileset entry there to find something even close to it. '<img'> Had it been a simple reposting, I'd have shunned it. Because it was twice modified, once by LoW and then by Cuprius, I decided it met the criteria for a modified work where all due credit was given the original creator. So I've used it and given him credits myself in my uses.

Its also included in Lord of Worms large compilation which he's mentioned folk are free to make use of. (It also includes Senem...*can't remeber how to spell it*'s under darks and Maxam's 2 great dungeon sets, all of which I use as seperate downloads myself already.)

Personally, I'd like to see Diademus give his own blessings to its use. He's waffled in his many responses elsewhere. One time saying use and modify as you wish and later asking stuff not be used. Perhaps SixThrice or LoW know how to reach him still and can point him here to respond if he's not still lurking about.

               Hi there,

I´m diademus and all those heated actions are realy long ago and over. You can use or modify the spidercaves as you wish in what ever version you may find it. Low has my original and a retextured version in his arbor falls PW.

greetings:)

Thank you, Diademus/Baba yaga. Those caves are beautiful and creepy. I am glad to have your blessing in using it.

Link please? I've only ever seen the reposted version that I don't think was modified. Rather curious what was modified...

The last name in the chain he mentioned was Cuprius which is the only source of Dia's spidercaves on the Vault. Basically that version has mini-maps from LoW. I don't know what else is new.

Speaking of changes to the tileset:
I'd like to remove some visual artifacts (rectangular dark spots) I am noticing in the big caves. I am guessing that it is an alpha channel issue that is only a problem for not so good graphics cards, but I'd still like to remove these weird shadow strips that show up. Not sure what to do about it. If anyone knows what I am talking about and has ideas, please chime in.

Here's a pic.

I only see those in the toolset myself henesu and then, only if I've alot of other stuff running as well. IG, I've only seen glitches if I was straining my computer by testing a map with the toolset open and several webpages being viewed while Skypeing. '<img'>

Jenna: Cuprius' repost was the original by Diademus and two newer versions. The newer were a version with LoW's Mini Maps added and then the last was that with the 1.69 compatibility fixes by Cuprius.

Its the computer/video card I am using on my development computer. I played the mod on a different machine with a better video card and didn't notice any of these shadowy artifacts in the Spider Cave tileset.
