This month’s challenge is “New Helms, Hats, Hoods, Hair Accessories, or other head decorations”.   What would a fantasy haberdashery sell? What sorts of attractive items, that can go on your head, would catch the eye of passers by and draw them into the store to shop?

This theme was suggested by Jenna WSI.

The possibilities this month are a bit more specific than previous challenges. Content should be somehow related to the head.

 Rules:
- It must be fully working in game
- Use of vanilla NWN or publicly available texture is fine, though state-of-the-art amateur's work would require 100% original work, but that's up to you.
- Teamwork is also welcome
- Beginners most welcome, don't be afraid, just try, you'll be surprised!

All submissions must be finished, working, and emailed to me or a link provided by February 28, 2011 (which is a Monday). Sooner than that is perfectly fine too. '<img'>

Some things you could include in the download/email that would make packaging everything up easier and faster:
- 2da lines needed
- Screenshot for use on the vault page (this also gives me hints on how to display the new goodie)
- Portraits (if needed) of your new goodie
- Any credits you would like listed
- If this is your first entry, please tell me what name you would like your work listed under and provide a link to your other NWN content if you want that displayed as well (the link bit is totally optional).

Remember, the Challenge is all about fun, sharing, creativity and surprise!

If you have concerns/questions about this month’s Challenge please post in this thread.

If you want to discuss the Monthly Custom Content Challenge idea as a whole or wish to submit ideas/themes for future Monthly Challenges,   please post in its thread here.

If you have a technical question about some custom content creation, please create a separate thread so that the answers can be found later by anyone, not just people interested in this Challenge. We'll try to help!

Have no fear and join the fun!

And finally, you can vote for March’s theme right here.

New heads would be great too. Gnomes and Halflings are pretty short in heads compared to what's on the vault for other races.

I'd love to see hats... like for women of high class, open faced hood, handkerchief over the head, helm designs that actually look good...

While making breakfast, I *finally* came up with a way to participate in this month's theme.  I'd been wracking my brain trying to come up with something my meager 2d skills could do and came up with nothing.  So, this time around I'll be doing a script.  A while back I worked on updating/expanding Mad Rabbit’s kick butt OnPlayerChat commands.  One thing I hadn’t got around to doing was a command to change the player’s head model.  Now seems like a good time.  So the command would be something like this:

/head ? – gives built in help on how to use the command

/head # - changes the player’s head to the input number.

/head n – changes the players head to the next one.  So current head +1

/head p – changes the players head to the previous one.  So current head -1

For Mythos I had planned on having ranges of heads so that players could not set their head to a model that doesn’t exist and thus end up walking about headless.  Obviously this is not a good idea for a generic script since everyone is going to have different ranges.  That could quite possibly have several gaps in them.  So I’m not sure how to handle that test case just yet.

If that goes quickly, I could expand the commands and add in:

/hair #, /skin #, /tat1 #, and /tat2 # - all of which would set the player’s coloring so they can customize the look of their heads, as well as the rest of their body.

Here's one I'd like to see updated for the latest patch and perhaps added to additional female heads.  Variations on it would be great too, especially a male version.

I already did hats for a while back, so I'm not really sure what I should do now! It'd be a bit... same-y, possibly? Any other suggestions? '<img'>

That is one way to cover up a serious bad hair day, Malaguerre! *grins*

Rubies, looking over Jenna's wish list links, my personal favs are:

Not those specifically, but the idea of those. If they could they be done as a VFX so the character's face was still visible that would be very neat. I've seen horns done like that, and of course parrots. '<img'>

This looks like it would be an "easy" add on to the hats you did for Commoners?

A selection of tophats, fedoras, pork pies and other Victorian/Edwardian/1920's hats would be pretty fantastic.  Just saying.

I would love to see more masks, either to make (N)PCs look mysterious and/or creepy (e.g. like these) or to disguise them as other creatures and thereby add more simple option to crafting NPC appearances based on dynamic models (e.g. like these, also included in CEP, I think. I also like the human male disguise mask in CEP but it's always bothered me there's no female version of it).

I know there are some Venetian masks / plague doctor's beak masks somewhere because I saw them in "Threat of Dreams" - does anyone know where they're located on the Vault? Or did Ghostfactory create them himself, specifically for his modules and never released them as independent haks?

If someone's still interested in the Ancient Civilizations theme, they could also do some folkloristic masks. Or someone still into The Tolls of War could make a general bandaged head as a helmet. Or someone interested in creepy stuff some general half decayed zombie heads you can easily put on customizable NPCs as a helmet etc.etc.

Hmmm masks... these two are kinda sorta masks from the clothing hak upgrade I'm currently working on for Mythos.  I just finished making the inventory icons for them (which I'm horrible at, these are my first 2 attempts).  If y'all know who the original authors are / would find them useful, I could see about getting the author's permission to include these in this month's challenge.  My guess is the haks I found them in are combination haks, so that makes tracking down the original author... interesting.

Found this one in Valine's ACAG hak.  Modifications include:  Created icon, added hair color to brows and tat1 to eyes to the texture.  No changes to the model file.

This one I found in THE PC PACK V3.10.HAK by REDCAP036.  Modifications include:   Added face to an existing hooded icon.  No changes to the texture or model file.

FYI, Lass, porting head models to helm models unfortunately causes issues with skin, hair, etc not being inherited from the base model.  I found this out a while back when I was trying to make a magical disguise mask that would change a character's appearance upon equipping it.  Skin and hair have to be swapped to other layers (I tend to use the leathers), but unfortunately the non-skin-and-hair palettes just don't have the same range of suitable tones.  It's a real pain and I wish it hadn't been implemented that way (it seems to be hardcoded, but I'd be delighted if someone told me otherwise).

I'll likely be sitting out of this month's entry - partly because I'm still working on the stetchers on the side, but mainly because I'd be remaking my entry a few months back with some minor changes and it seems a bit like cheating.

those entries, redone as cloaks, would be VERY welcomed!

*reading and re-reading Este's comments*  Okay I still don't get it.  I briefly tested the helmet in game and she did come out "wearing" black hair.  The icon however has the light brown hair.  Dunno how I missed that.  Ahhh the wasted time!  Is this what you mean?

I agree with Usag.  The hats are super cute and would be a nice addition as cloaks as well as the robes.  And if you were to clean up some of the models and their placement a bit... so much the better!  Or even releasing the non-human versions.  That would be new work, right?  This time around I can help with the icons, I've learned that since the commoner's challenge.  *beaming at Este*

Though completed back in.. Nov or Dec (but not yet left my hard drive), I did some icon fixes to some Bioware helms.  I'd be happy to include them in this month's theme if y'all want.  There are only 2 of them.  #s 11 (removed stray L1 pixels in the L2 face section, added extra row of M2 at horns so it shows up better) and 17 (Added line of M2 to bottoms of the side bits).

I've done some icon clean up for Mythos of two of the "Threat of Dreams" masks.  Original hak numbers 41 and 43 if anyone else wants them.  Nice find Olivier!

Lass, it looks like it works in the toolset, but once you test it in-game the skin and hair channels revert to their defaults (pale skin and rich dark gold hair) rather than inheriting the colours of the character wearing the helm.  That's what I found when I tested my models anyway.  I know what you mean about wasted time.  :-/

For this challenge, I decided I'd try some circlets.  Although I've never worked with robes before, I recalled Lisa's robe-hat and reckoned I'd give this approach a try.  I thought I'd succeeded reasonably well - I had my first simple circlet not clipping with a good number of heads (all heads = impossible due to geometry variations between them) - but then I checked it out in-game and it turns out that robes parented to the head dummy don't track with head turning.  :-(  So the head turns but the circlet stays in the one place.  This isn't much of an issue for PCs - more so for NPCs, as the effect is quite severe when they turn their heads to watch a passing PC.  Any ideas for how I should proceed?  If there's no workaround for this, I might just stick to making a few heads instead.  Anyway, here's a toolset pic of the robe-circlet worn by a few characters:
